Do mirrors help you workout?

Enter any gym and you will most probably see wall-to-wall mirrors, put in place to inspire patrons to exercise and get the most from their workouts. Many people like using mirrors to watch themselves workout, noting that being able to "see" the muscle work is an important part of the bodybuilding experience.

A recent study done at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, has found that women who work out in front of mirrors felt worse about themselves compared with those who exercised without the use of mirrors.

The researchers (all psychologists) have concluded that inner dialogue has much to do with the findings. They theorize that, unless the person is an experienced athlete, they may have a tendency to notice their flaws, and thus become discouraged.

Also, the study examined whether doing cardiovascular work in front of a mirror made the participants feel less or more fatigued. The result? Participants reported feeling more fatigued when exercising in front of a mirror.

New Sleep Research!

New research has shown that a good nights sleep may allow you to retain more information, and recover memories you believed were lost.

Scientists from the University of Chicago conducted a study in which they tested the ability of volunteers to remember a series of simple words.

Each of the participants was asked to record the amount of sleep that they got for several nights before the study. Over the course of the day, researchers found that the ability to remember and recall information declined over the course of the day.

The next day, the subjects returned to the lab for another round of testing. The findings were that those subjects who had a good nights sleep after the test could remember far more than those who slept poorly after the test.

Sleep is a vital aspect of bodybuilding recovery. Aside from the above findings, sleep allows for the release of anabolic hormones, which encourage protein synthesis, thus repairing damaged muscles.

Do you suffer from cholesterol problems?

Statistics show that 61% of North American adults are obese or overweight. The statistics for children and adolescents is not much better. Obesity is the cause of a host of health problems, one of which is high bad cholesterol levels.

In an attempt to stem the rising tide of obesity, science has done extensive research on conditions positively correlated with obesity.

Recent cholesterol research has indicated that a diet high in oat bran (along with caloric restriction and dietary lipid reduction) significantly reduces total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotien B.

Alert: New birth control for men!

A new birth control pill for men may be available in the next couple of years. The pill is currently undergoing human testing, and has been shown to be effective at preventing pregnancy in 100% of all cases.

The "male pill" is a combination of two hormones: testosterone and progestin. The procedure is simple: testosterone is implanted under the skin and then progestin is injected regularly.

If this technology makes it to the US market, American bodybuilders will be in their glory. After the injections of testosterone, bodybuilders might "forget" to take the female hormone progestin, and instead go and deadlift 800lbs.

Lets hope that this becomes a viable alternative. Test anyone?

Want less muscle pain?

Take caffeine!

Recent research from the University of Georgia has shown that aside from caffines ability to stimulate the CNS and liberate fatty acids from adipocytes, caffine can also reduce the amount of pain that results from intense exercise, thus allowing you to work harder, as well as recover faster.

Caffeine is also a great diuretic that provides energy and helps to rid water from under the skin, thus making you look leaner and feel stronger.

Creatine for women?

Creatine monohydrate is known the world over as a safe, effective, supplement. It has a wide range of uses, and can build muscle, and even make you smarter.
