Luckily, there are proven strategies you can use to slow down the aging process, helping ensure you look your absolute best for years to come. Here are some of the main ones you should know about and start implementing in your life.

    1. Resistance Train

You've likely heard it before and now you're going to hear it again - if you want to reduce the impacts of aging, resistance train. Why? Basically resistance training is the single most effective thing you could do to keep your metabolism at an elevated rate as time goes on.

Many aging adults blame their weight gain on a 'slowed metabolism.' Instead of blaming this physiological factor, they should blame their reluctance to take control over their metabolism and start weight training.

Chances are you know that performing exercise on a regular basis is going to have an impact on your body weight and metabolic rate. Here are basic factors on how aerobic and anaerobic exercise influence metabolic rate.

The reduction in metabolic rate that is seen with age is vastly due to the fact that if we are not constantly applying a stimulus to our muscle cells, they will be lost. Since muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in the body, as time goes on and you lose more and more muscle mass, your metabolism starts to slow more and more.

Soon the scale starts creeping up and you're experiencing that 'slowed metabolism.' Rather than thinking it's an unpreventable evil that's going to happen whether you like it or not, take responsibility and put an effort forth to avoid it.

    2. Reduce Stress Levels

Another important thing for preventing the process of aging and regain a more youthful appearance is to do everything possible to reduce stress levels. Stress really wreaks havoc on not only your appearance, but it can also cause a number of diseases as well. Most individuals underestimate the impacts stress has on them, so be sure you aren't making this mistake.

Stress typically impacts your posture, which automatically reduces the image you portray to others, it can cause your face to look less vibrant, and it will cause the body to release a hormone called cortisol, which encourages fat accumulation in the stomach region.

    3. Check Your Frame Of Mind

While it may sound a bit on the cheesy side, smiling can actually help you maintain a more youthful appearance and will help to place you in a better mental state. Many people adopt a frown without even knowing it when they are stressed throughout the day or otherwise.

By making a conscious effort to smile more often and simply think about the things in life you're grateful for, you'll improve your frame of mind, which then translates over to your health and body.

    4. Try New Physical Activities

Maintaining a regular exercise program will be important for keeping the muscle mass up, but to take this one step farther, you should also be aiming to try new physical activities on a regular basis.

Whenever the body is forced to learn a new pattern of movement, you're going to experience neuro-muscular adaptations, which is essentially the muscles and nervous system working together to perform that activity.

By changing your workout around regularly, you will help prevent plateaus while also keeping the mind active. As an added benefit, there's also a decreased risk that you start suffering from boredom with your workouts, which could then impact your ability to stick with the workout program overall.

    5. Avoid Central Nervous System Stimulants

If you're like most people, chances are you really enjoy your morning cup of coffee. Once in a while you may want to consider making it decaf however. While caffeine has been shown to have positive health benefits and will increase athletic performance, too much caffeine and other CNS stimulates can start to wear on you, making you look older than you are.

One cup of coffee per day is unlikely to have a high effect with regard to this but if you're regularly drinking multiple cups of coffee per day, drinking sodas, taking the newer energy beverages that are out there, or are using fat loss supplements designed to stimulate the nervous system, you may start to notice impacts.

Try and limit your consumption to just one or two of the above options, and then go with non-stimulate beverages or supplements after that.

    6. Eat A Lower Calorie Diet

Finally, the last thing you can do to help maintain a youthful appearance and feel younger overall is to follow a slightly calorie-reduced diet. There has been a bit of talk recently about calorie restriction diets to promote a longer lifespan, which essentially has you eating fewer calories than you require on a long-term basis.

You shouldn't take this principle so far as to start neglecting essential vitamin, minerals, and nutrient intake, but following a diet that calls for 10% fewer calories than you need to maintain your weight may be beneficial.

This will also help to ward off any weight gain that you may experience as you age, and likely help you focus more of your food intake on fruits and vegetables (since these are naturally lower in calories making them fit with the diet easier).

Keep in mind with this though that if you are looking to actually build new muscle, you will not be able to eat under maintenance intake and be successful, so in that situation this wouldn't apply to you.

So, keep these points in mind. By making small changes to your everyday lifestyle you can promote a more youthful appearance and help slow the process of aging.
