Background
I started lifting when I was about 16 years old. I guess you could say films like Rocky opened the door, but the feeling of self-sacrifice and self-improvement kept it open. Most of my practice was based on articles on Bodybuilding.com and the information on its forums. The more I read the more I also became interested in sports nutrition. It was at this juncture in my lifetime I applied to enter the University to study medicine. If that hadn't worked out, I'm pretty sure I would have gone into nutrition. Throughout my time at the University I have trained regularly, most of the time at least 4 days a week. It has provided me with discipline, confidence and a lot of like-minded friends. After my 2nd year I decided I wanted to make sure newcomers didn't squander their valuable 'beginners gains' with improper training and diet. Fast forward 3 years, I have been working as a qualified fitness instructor and personal trainer for 2.5 years. I am now in my penultimate year of medical studies and will (hopefully) qualify as a doctor in June 2010. He can be contacted at shamirkarmali@yahoo.co.uk.
