Ronny Rockel Saves Best For 2010 Arnold Classic! Can He Win?

I asked Ronny how he will fare after placing 10th last year. Are recent improvements and a great Olympia placing enough to lift him at the 2010 Arnold Classic?
Article Summary:
  • Ronny has been working hard and will be coming to the Arnold in his best shape ever.
  • He is very honored to be the only German competitor to be stepping on stage this year.
  • His goals for this year are to place in the top 5 at the Arnold and the Olympia.
  • A man who is finally getting his bodybuilding due is Ronny Rockel, the German battleship known for his incredibly dense musculature and some of the best symmetry and proportions currently seen in pro bodybuilding circles today.

After placing a career best seventh at the 2009 Mr. Olympia this master of symmetry is now gunning for major placements secure in the knoweldge that the judges can no longer ignore the quality he brings to the stage time and again.

When Rockel first burst onto the pro bodybuilding scene back in 2003 he was considered just another European bodybuilder there to round out the lower placements at contests such as the Ironman Pro and then-Night of Champions.

But that all changed in 2006 when the 5' 6", 230 pound champion won his first professional show: the Australian Pro. Since then he has been carving up much of the competiton in most of the contests he has entered. And amazingly, for one so experienced he seems to progress from event to event.

On the eve of the 2010 Arnold Classic I asked Ronny how he will fare at the show in which he placed 10th last year. With the momentum of taking seventh at the 2009 Olympia combined with the recent improvements he has made it comes as no surprise that he intends to be at his very best.

[ Q ] And how do you expect to look come show time?

I will compete there in the best shape of my life. And then we will see.

[ Q ] What is your main goal for this year's Arnold Classic?

The main goal is to place in the top six and to qualify for the Mr. Olympia. But in secret I hope that I can place in the top four.

[ Q ] You have been getting some much-deserved respect recently as shown with your seventh placing at the 2009 Mr. Olympia among quality competition. What improvements have you made in recent years that have helped you climb in the placements?

My last contest prep was, compared to the year before, very different. Together with my trainer we have changed a lot of things, especially the nutrition, the supplements and the training. So the result was the best condition ever in my career. My glutes and hamstrings were shredded. My back had a lot of detail and more thickness also.

[ Q ] In the past you would often get beaten by guys who were incomplete and not in their best condition, while you were sharper than ever and balanced from head to toe. Why was this the case do you think?

I think that is always very difficult for European bodybuilders. You have to compete considerably better than the other guys. But that's not the only reason. I think the main reason was that my condition from the frontside was good but the backside was always too smooth.

[ Q ] Do you think you are finally peaking to your potential or is the best from Ronny Rockel yet to come? Will you continue to improve?

I am sure that I will continue to improve. You will see it at the Arnold Classic this year.

[ Q ] How do you stay motivated to compete when placements are not going in your direction?

That's a part of my job as a professional bodybuilder and disappointments are also motivation to prepare harder for the next show. I never resign - instead I look ahead to the future.

[ Q ] What does the Arnold Classic event represent to you as a competitor?

Well, it is a great honor for me to receive an invitation as the only German bodybuilder. I am looking forward to competing there. There are only the best bodybuilders at the Arnold Classic and it is also one of the biggest sports festivals in the world with a great tradition behind it. It is - together with the Mr. Olympia - the most important bodybuilding contest. And I am the only German competitor this year.

[ Q ] Do you feel you will some day win the Arnold Classic? What are your goals towards further competition at this show?

Yes. I think I will because I have one of the best symmetries and almost no weaknesses.

[ Q ] What changes, if any, have you made to your training program from previous years? Why is this?

For my last competition prep and this year I did a lot of super sets, giant sets and FST 7 training. This training has helped me to achieve more detail, more mass and and a better level of conditioning.

[ Q ] How do you ensure you achieve an ultra-defined physique the final week before a show?

My trainer helps me with that and will do what he says. I first begin my diet in sufficient time, early enough. We also try to make sure I'm in competition shape at least one week before the show. The last days before the show are for the final cut where we strip water weight.

[ Q ] The Olympia is very close to the Arnold Classic? How difficult is it for you to peak in such a short time period?

For me it is not so difficult, because I am in good condition the whole year. I love my training and go to the gym nearly every day. My nutrition is also very good and I don't eat too much sh!t in the offseason.

[ Q ] What has your basic training philosophy always been and how has this approach benefited you through the years?

My training philosophy is very easy. I go to the gym nearly every day and train hard all year round; not only during contest prep time.

    [ Q ] What are your long-term bodybuilding goals?

To improve myself from year to year. But my main goals are to finish in the top five at the Mr. Olympia and in the top three at the Arnold Classic.

[ Q ] Is there anyone - including sponsors - you would like to thank for having helped you to reach this stage in your journey?

Yes, of course. There are three people I would like to thank.

Best Body Nutrition representative Andreas Arzt for sponsoring me. My trainer, Manuel Bauer, for the best contest prep and my training partner, Mario, who gives me a lot of training motivation.
