Trials & Tribulations: Be A Positive Role Model To Your Children!

Health and fitness is a huge part of my child's life and I can see how it provides her with confidence and stability in other areas of her life. Here's a glimpse into my life and how I am being a positive role model for my own!

I have always been involved in sports in one form or another all my life. I have represented at state and National levels in 5 sports. I have been training with weights since the age of 9. I love health and fitness as it has given me so much. I had a poor upbringing, I suffered from malnutrition, and I was unable to read or write at 13 years of age while taking care of my self at 16 years of age.

Through all these trials and tribulations sport is what kept me going! It was the only thing I seemed to be any good at. At times I wonder where I would be if I was not so health conscious and into sports.

Childhood Experience

Our childhood has a major impact on who we become as adults. I will give you two prime examples of incidents from my childhood that had a profound effect on my life. My father left my mother and I when I was 2 years of age.

The following simple words from my mother molded in me so many ways for the man I would become. My mother rarely spoke of my father but she told me he was a professional boxer and that was all she said! I immediately conjured thoughts of what a boxer was and how a boxer looks.

Most children want to please their parents and I was no different. Even though I had never met my father, knowing about him as a boxer gave me a direction an idea as to who my father was and I was able identify with him for the first time in my life.

Another example of guidance I received was when I was 8 years old and my mum would always send me to the shop to get her cigarettes and she would actually ask me to spark one up for her which I would also do. Once I took a puff, as any curious little kid would do, I told my mom and she looked at me and said, "You will not be as fast a runner for one year now because smoking makes you run slow."

Those simple words kept me away from cigarettes for the rest of my life. I was a very good runner at that stage and I have NEVER again touched a cigarette. These little things that could be considered minor had a major influence on my life. Just the words from a parent can have such a profound effect on a child.

Becoming A Father

Becoming a father is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It has made me more responsible as a man and as a husband and now a father. I had a bad childhood and I have and will continue to do everything within my power to ensure my daughter Jesse gets all the advantages that life has to offer.

That Has Ever Happened To Me.

I see a great deal of children interacting with their parents as I take my daughter to ballet, gymnastics, the YMCA, as well many other activities involving children and their parents.

Here is what really pisses me off! It seems that parents that had a bad upbringing tend to treat their own children the same way they were treated by their parents. It doesn't matter that they disliked the way they where treated or were hurt by their parents actions. They simply continue the cycle of abuse and mistreatment towards their own children all the while saying this is how I was brought up so why it should be any different for my child!

"It Seems That Parents That Had A Bad Upbringing
Tend To Treat Their Own Children The Same Way They
Were Treated By Their Parents."

If I followed this formula I would not feed or bath my child and just leave her at home to fend for herself as I was made to do from the age of 7. No, I would never do that because I HATED the way I was treated and it affected my life more than I ever realized and I vowed that I would never make my child feel the way my parents made me feel.

I am pissed and bitter at my parents because I went without so much and I will always wonder what more I could have achieved in sports if I had been given direction, guidance, support and reassurance. I would never want my child thinking I was a poor parent the way I think of mine and this affects the way I see and feel about them to this day.

I do not have a close relationship with either of my parents. I have not spoken with my mother for over 10 years and I feel no need to speak with her anytime soon due to the hurt and abuse I received!

Yes.
No.

My father and I are getting closer but I will always have bitterness in me for the way he abandoned me! In life you can't always take things that you have done back so you best be sure they are the right actions before you take them when it comes to any matter of life, but most importantly the actions you take with your children.

Another aspect that troubles me is that so many fat and unhealthily parents have fat and unhealthy children. If you're fat or unhealthy you know how much it sucks to look and feel like sh!t. So why would you not protect your own children from what you endured as a child.

I have never met anyone that has said "Oh, I love being fat and unhealthy, it just feels so good and to have people looking at me because I look like sh!t feels real good." People also go on about thyroid problems and such.

Now, if I was walking through Ethiopia or some third world country and I saw an overweight person walking around there I would think perhaps they have a thyroid problem. But in the US the percentages is so low that no one deserves the benefit of the doubt on that one. If you're fat it simply means you eat too much and don't do enough exercise.

I suffered from so many things like malnutrition along with suffering from servere acne for a 5 year period. I never looked in the mirror with the lights on as I was so ashamed of my skin and hated being skinny and always hungry.

As a parent I never knew any other way but knew it was not the right way. I have read countless books on leadership and being a parent that cares and looks out for their young. I knew none of this because I was never shown it but I learnt for the sake of my child's future and for any parent to do any less does not deserve the honor and responsibly of having a child.

I honestly believe that parents that are fat and unhealthy are actually happy that their children endures what they did because it gives them the excuse of it just runs in the family and there is nothing I can do about it. Bullsh!t! They just use their own child to validate them being fat.

As a parent we have a huge responsibility to our children, we have to guard against them falling into bad habits and encourage them and give them guidance to keep them away from drugs, bad influences and many other situations the children will face as they grow.

Health & Fitness For Children
dots

Health and fitness is a huge part of my child's life and I can see how it provides her with confidence and stability in other areas of her life. My daughter is extremely active and actually calls herself an athlete and asks to train and do certain sports.

Jesse will walk into my office at home with her little boxing gloves and the punching mitts and say, "Daddy I want to do some Muay Thai. "I have never said no as I enjoy it just as much as she does."

What Is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai, literally "Thai Boxing," and also known as The Art of the Eight Limbs is the Thai name for a form of hard martial art practiced in several Southeast Asian countries including Thailand.

To see her learn and grow and know that you are part of the reason for her growth is an amazing feeling. I create new and exciting exercises for Jesse and I watch to see which ones work for her and most importantly which ones she enjoys. I am also quite strict with Jesse when we are training.

"To See Her Learn And Grow And Know That You Are Part Of The Reason For Her Growth Is An Amazing Feeling."

I explain that we are here to train and not to play. We have play time together and play with her Barbie's and other girly toys. I tried to get her into GI JOE but she seemed to like the Barbie more (LOL). Hey a man's gotta try!

By taking training seriously and helping her focus and work hard it provides her with the ability and focus to use in other areas of her life. Jesse responds very well to the discipline I expect when we are training together and she will even ask to do more at times after we have finished our little workouts.

By watching Jesse I can see when she is bored, tired or just not in the mood for training that day and just like with my own training I will provide change and mix things up a little. An example would be rather than training at the YMCA one day we will go to the park and she will play on the swings and monkey bars and then I will do my own thing and every 10 minutes or so I will get her do some sits-ups, squats or pullups on the bars.

I will then let her play again and get out the soccer ball and then we will do some balls skills like dribbling and passing. If you pay attention to your child you will see what they are good at and what are bad at, and you can help guide her as she improves.

Conclusion

I will be outlining some training programs and other elements I have learned and utilized in my child's life. I constantly say these words to my little Jesse: "You always stand up for yourself and you can be anything you choose because you are special." Then I get her to repeat these words back to me.

So in the future my daughter will one day say, "My father always told me to stand up for myself and that I can be anything I choose!" That day will be a very proud day for me, because nothing is more important than our own.
