FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, February 2007
First Statewide Archery Tournament to Debut: Student Arrows on Target in State NASP Program.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Students from schools across Ohio will converge at the Arnold Sports Festival on Friday, March 2, 9am-10pm for the first Ohio National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament at Veterans Memorial.

Arrow About The Tournament:

The tournament will serve as a season-ending championship for many competitors who have participated in the program during and after school throughout the year.

"This will be a great experience for the schools and students involved," said Kevin Dixon, coordinator for the Ohio NASP tournament and shooting sports coordinator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife "The kids are very excited and will enjoy being together competing in a large event like this."

Dixon started working with the National Archery in the Schools Program in 2003 when he attended a NASP archery instructor training in Kentucky. The Ohio Division of Wildlife implemented the program in April 2004.

There are now 136 schools in Ohio that have certified teachers and dedicated NASP programs. The program is growing nationwide, too, with 10 states boasting more than 100 schools now participating in the program. In addition, 41 states have implemented NASP into their schools as a part of their physical education curriculum.

"Archery is a great sport that almost everyone can participate in - it is a lifelong skill," Dixon said. "The lessons learned through this program include higher self esteem, improved confidence, respect, and patience. Kids love NASP because it is an independent sport but at the same time they are an important part of the group."

The Arnold Archery Competition/Ohio NASP Tournament is open to current Ohio NASP participating schools. Students in grades K-12 will compete in three divisions for individual and team awards, with the first-place team in each division advancing to the NASP National Championships in Louisville, Ky., in June. Admission to the Arnold Archery Competition/Ohio NASP Tournament is included in a $10 Arnold Fitness EXPO, set for March 2-4 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Tickets are available at the Greater Columbus Convention Center the day of the event or at Ticketmaster at (614) 431-3600 and www.ticketmaster.com/arnold.
