[ Q ] Could you tell us a little bit about your background personally and also your professional background in the industry?
dot

I started in this industry when I turned 21. I was a self trained starter, learning a lot from books and training hard; as well as tips from others in the gym. I joined the military 5 years later, and did 5 years of service then left to pursue my passion; which is fitness.

I did the trainer thing part time on the side for some time, but really didn't think I would do it full time. I found training on the side just wasn't satisfying enough.

It took some time for me to gain confidence in myself but once I did... low and behold I have been a trainer for over a year now, own my own personal training business (Envied Bodies Fitness), and am doing quite well. My tag line for my business is "Be Envied, Not Envious".

I have competed in several natural bodybuilding competitions in the last year with placements ranking from 2nd to 5th. I haven't gone Stateside yet - they all were Canadian shows - but plan to next season.

[ Q ] What made you want to become a personal trainer?
dot

The love for the fitness as a whole but especially the joy of seeing people get better and better where they want to improve and where they didn't know they could. When they accomplish their goals its like a kids eyes lighting up on Christmas morning, that totally satisfies me.

dot
[ Q ] What do you feel separates you from other trainers?
dot

What separates me from other trainers is the ability to make adjustments to every clients needs as their program progresses or their goals change. I also have a very unique flair for unorthodox exercises which in turn creates better results for my clients.

[ Q ] What are the most common mistakes you feel trainers make?
dot

Trainers sometimes do not understand or know what the client's needs/goal are. Some trainers have a knack of figuring out what the clients need/want are and some don't.

If they don't they should ask before setting out goals that the person may or may not want, this can create very negative results. Just because a trainer feels they need to improve an area, the client may not.

[ Q ] What does a normal work day look like for you?
dot

Go to the gym in the morning managing the Snap Fitness club that I am contracted with, as well as train at.

Once I am finished there I either go to my studio or to the other Snap Fitness club I train my other clients out of. My days run long; some days from 5am to 11pm. I do mostly get my weekends off however.

[ Q ] You obviously set up your clients on a workout program; do you also give them a diet to follow?
dot

They will get a diet plan, however some clients insist that their diet is fine; there isn't much you can do about that except let them know that with slight modifications to their diet this may help their goal and get better end results. But if they don't want the help you can't force it upon them.

dot
[ Q ] Do you feel more comfortable training male or female clients or does it really not matter to you?
dot

Male or female clients, it makes no difference to me; however sometimes the client may prefer a female trainer; in that case I may hand them to one of my staff.

[ Q ] Where do you train your clients?
dot

Out of the Snap Fitness centers that I contract with, in my in-home studio, or their homes if they prefer... if it is more convenient for them.

dot
[ Q ] Do you recommend supplements to your clients? If so, what do you recommend?
dot

I recommend the appropriate supplements that will better my client's results. For example someone whose goal is to lose weight, I would recommend a good protein product to them because that would aid in their end result. If a bodybuilder is looking to gain mass and size I may suggest a good protein supplement, as well as something like a volumizer.

Supplementation is very important in any person's personal fitness plan. I encourage all clients to use supplement proteins, vitamins and veggie greens, clients will always do well with an added supplement boost.

dot
[ Q ] Do you find your clients follow your guidelines to a "T", or do some of them have common mistakes along the way?
dot

No client is ever prefect - they all fall off the wagon at some point; it's expected. That doesn't mean they won't get back on track, you just have to be patient with them.

dot
[ Q ] Motivation is a key to success. How do you keep your clients motivated?
dot

I always let them know if they are getting results they wish. However, I also let them know that they need to work harder when they need to. They usually respond well to both tactics, but you really need to know when and with whom you can use them.

[ Q ] Do you have a success story that you want to share with us that really means a lot to you?
dot

One success story I have is a client of mine who had never seen his abs and was always the chubby kid. I helped him with a workout routine as well as a full balanced diet plan and he not only found his abs but went to the Fame Worlds in Montreal. He may not have 1st, but he did place in the top 6.

[ Q ] If there was one piece of advice you could give to the readers, what would it be?
dot

Remember that a winner has never won quitting and never will, but a winner has never quit and won, and never will either!

dot
[ Q ] Would you like to thank anyone for helping you get to where you are with your career?
dot

My wonderful girlfriend has helped me immensely - countless hours helping me study, so I could pass my certification, and helping me with the endless amounts of paperwork that is involved with owning your own personal training business. She has also been there for the guys that compete for me. She makes an excellent posing coach and is now a trainer herself.
