Why I Got Started

I was just about to need to buy a size larger than size 11 jeans in the store and I said to myself: "Enough!" I was dissatisfied with everything I put on and my family was making comments about my cellulite.

Most of my fat was settling around my hips and thighs. I was pretty much the poster child for women's problem areas. The more bad food I ate, the larger my saddlebags grew. I was ashamed to go to the pool with my kids.

My fear was that I was sinking into that "mom state" where you take care of other people and let yourself go. I was tired all of the time, upset about the way I looked, and had no energy. I tried all of the fad diets and gave them up quickly because I got nowhere.

How I Did It

I posted my before picture on BodySpace even though it was hard. I cut my head out of the photo because I was so embarrassed by it, but I forced myself to do it.

People think my username (GoFatGirl) is a putdown to myself but I chose it for two reasons: I was embarrassed to say my real name, and it was my motivational phrase in the gym. Whenever I felt like giving up, I would say to myself "GoFatGrl! You can do this!"

I began to eat clean and read everything I could get my hands on about weight training. The support and information (as well as the great deals on supplements) from Bodybuilding.com was a large part of my transformation.

I don't think my family believed I could do it at first, but I was determined! I would sit in a restaurant and eat a grilled chicken salad while my family enjoyed cheesy pasta.

I posted pics of fit women on my wall and my husband offered a lot of support and guidance on training in the gym, being a powerlifter himself. Every morning I would get up and do cardio even though I didn't feel like it some days.

I always felt better when I was done. I talked a lot with a friend who had competed in figure competitions and she described to me the changes your body goes through when you transform it. This advice helped me greatly to push through those tough times when I felt like giving up.

Now, I can't imagine living the way I did before and I plan on continuing to sculpt my body for the rest of my life. I don't even want the foods I craved before. I crave working out! At 44-years old, I am in the best shape of my life and feel great!

I have more energy now to take care of the people I love and I feel like I am setting a great example for my 3 kids so that they can grow up healthy and strong. I made it to a size 1 jeans. I have never worn that size! Anything is possible!

Suggestions For Others

Mix up your workout so you don't get bored. After weight training with certain exercises for a while, switch it up and do different ones. Just make sure you are trying to hit all muscle groups. Once you lose the fat, then you can begin to sculpt that perfect body.

Find your motivation and don't give up! Even if you don't feel like working out, do a little of something. It's hard sometimes, but believe me when I say you will see change! Diet is very important. I was in the gym for a while before I changed up my diet.

I saw much bigger results when I was eating right. Mothers and women: Find a little time for yourself. That doesn't mean forget your family, but you need that time to take care of yourself so you can better take care of them.
