Oksana's Secret Olympia Dress
 |
Oksana Grishina came to America knowing a handful of people and very little English. She put herself on the map at the 2007 Europa Supershow with a routine that is still one of the most amazing routines I've seen. Many people have criticized her routine for being too theatrical. I find her routines to be some of the best the IFBB has ever seen. Oksana has changed up her routine and included more strength moves than before. You'll be mesmerized when she performs her "secret dress" routine.
The key to Oksana's success will be in the physique round. If she can position herself in or near the top six going into the night show, look for her to be in the top spots. I caught up with Oksana days out from her second Olympia for this exclusive interview.

[ Isaac Hinds ] How many times have you competed in the Olympia?

[ Oksana Grishina ] This will be my second time.
[ IH ] Did you do gymnastics or dance (or both) growing up?

[ OG ] The Russian school of rythmic gymnastic pretty much contained ballet classes. Well, its very good base to start then to move on to other dance styles or school, whatever you would like. I danced when I had worked in an art house (like a theater), modern dance and several others, also I used to work as a choreographer in art school.
[ IH ] How did you get started in fitness competitions?

Fitness was my extra job after art school and theater and there I met some interesting people who showed me what it is and I tried it.
[ IH ] Does your family in Russia follow your competitions?

[ OG ] Yes of course, my sister (I have a younger sister) works in fitness too, she is also former gymnast. My father, in his time, did different kinds of sports like boxing and sprinting. My family likes what I do and always supports me; it helps me a lot.
[ IH ] Do you travel often?

[ OG ] Yes, I traveled a lot first because my father was in the military and then I started to compete in gymnastics. After gymnastics it was fitness international competitions and guest performances.
[ IH ] I understand your husband Boris is your trainer and coach. Is that true?

[ OG ] Boris started to train me in this sport from my first step in gym. I'm very lucky to have such a good coach like him. He teaches me a lot about this sport.
[ IH ] How did you two meet?

[ OG ] We met each other, of course, in the gym. (laughs)
[ IH ] When you came to America you spoke very little English, now you speak it very well. Did you take classes or how did you improve your English?

[ OG ] It was in Vegas where I started to attend school classes and then I continued. Of course when you live in a new country you will speak with people and will get better at doing it.
[ IH ] What was the biggest challenge you faced when you came to America?

[ OG ] Everything was a big challenge for me.
[ IH ] How often do you practice your routine?

[ OG ] When the routine is already created I start to do it almost everyday. Now it takes more time because I improve it to add more difficult elements.
[ IH ] Will you have a new routine for the Olympia?

[ OG ] It will be my new routine with my secret dress. I just put in more difficult exercises. I love this routine and want to show her on the Olympia stage (she should to live one more time).
[ IH ] That's hilarious. What is your goal for the Olympia?

[ OG ] To make a better shape according to the judges opinion and my ability.
[ IH ] What type of training are you doing?
[ OG ] Before the contest it's more sets and more reps of course.
[ IH ] How much cardio do you do each day?

[ OG ] It's like 2 hours per day, 1 hour in morning and 1 in the evening.
[ IH ] What supplements do you take?

[ OG ]
[ IH ] Favorite meal of the day and what is it?

[ OG ] It's cake: oats with egg whites and peanut butter on the top.
[ IH ] What advice do you have to other competitors from outside of the USA who dream of coming here to compete?

[ OG ] They should be ready to start new life and then maybe compete.
[ IH ] Do you help other women with their routines?

[ OG ] Yes, they are all from different kinds of levels in this sport and I'm always enjoying helping people.
[ IH ] What's the biggest difference for you to live in LA vs New York or Vegas?

[ OG ] Weather and nature. Vegas is a more international town, New York sometimes looks like Moscow, and California - the sunshine in your life will be forever.
[ IH ] When Oksana Grishina's name is announced next weekend at the Olympia, what place will be in front of it?

[ OG ] I do all my the best, I will try to show myself from my best sides, I respect all competitors all of them already deserve award because they compet on the Olympia .
[ IH ] Will you be working a booth at the Olympia?

[ OG ] I will work on the Gaspari booth on Friday and Saturday.
[ IH ] What is your website or where can people find out more information on you?

[ OG ] My website is oksanagrishina.com.
[ IH ] Thanks Oksana. Anyone you want to thank?

[ OG ] Isaac, thank you so much for your questions. Of course I would like to say more about myself but now it's getting harder because it's so close to the Olympia. I would like to give you an interview maybe at the Olympia, then you can check my perfect English.
See you there.
That sounds like a plan! Thanks for your time and all the best. We'll see you there Oksana.
