Hi Bodybuilding.com, I'm Cicely "CiCi" Kyle, CSCS, and I'm a personal trainer, graduate assistant, graduate student, and fitness competitor. I just started competing last year (June 2006) at the Southern Classic in Jackson, MS. Since then I have competed 5 times placing in the top 2 at each show (Most noteworthy is 2006 Fall Classic Women's Tri-Fitness runner up and Florida State Fitness Champion).
Since this will be my first time doing 2 shows back to back I have taken a different approach to my diet and cardio - and wouldn't you know I pick a national competition to try it! My theory is that I will be stage ready as of Thursday, November 8 (2 days before my first show). I will stop working out at that point. After my Tri-fitness show on November 10-11 I will assess my physique and tweak my diet a little. But the only exercise I will do after Tri-fitness will be walking through my routine. I don't think it's a big risk since my physique will be stage ready before I stop training. The only thing I will have to concentrate on is keeping my diet tight the last few days. It's all a learning experience, so I'm pretty excited to see how my body responds.
I have prepared mostly by myself but I have had the input of a number of veteran competitors. New IFBB pro bodybuilder, Mike Horn, has been helping me with my diet this year and his wife, NPC national level figure competitor, Jan Horn, has helped me with all sorts of preparation tips. My routine was choreographed by one of my best friends (and future figure competitor) Dwyanetta Thomas.
Strange as it may seem, I don't have a clue who I will be competing against in Dallas. I don't check results from other shows to see who has been winning and since there are no national rankings for NPC fitness competitors (and no list of who will be competing in Dallas) I don't know what to expect. So as cliché as it may seem, I will be competing against myself. My biggest goal is to place first in fitness routine as that is what brought me to competition in the first place.
Strange, the whole process is strange if you ask any of my friends! Really the only thing that I have done different in preparation for Dallas, that I wouldn't do if I wasn't competing, is eat clean. I workout like it's going out of style anyway, so having a big competition to focus on has only improved my training and made me more disciplined in regards to my diet.
Of course (LOL)! Before this show, I never dieted for longer than 3 weeks before a show; so starting 10 weeks out was absolute insanity to me. I would have one "cheat meal" a week for the first 5 weeks (and when I cheated it was more of me eating more than what I was supposed to than eating something really bad). My "cheating" within the last 3 weeks has consisted of apples and natural peanut butter for dessert and extra servings of sweet potatoes. I have been dead on the last week and plan on staying that way until the day of the show. It's game time!
I have had a lot of support from family, friends, and clients for this show so I don't want to let them down. When it's 4 am and time to get up for cardio I think about how one of my best friends will be driving 11 hours to see me compete and it makes getting up easier. Also, how cool would it be to be able to call myself the most fit person in the nation?!
I'm not a big supplement person (mainly because I am still a struggling college student and supplements are expensive). But I have had the opportunity to use Hydroxycut over the last 2 months and I love it. I have also been taking CLA and vitamins for the last 2 weeks since my diet has become even more restricted.
