Nicole Ball belongs to a select group of bodybuilders who, in truth, need never set foot on a bodybuilding stage again and yet still be universally accepted as a champion within the community.

However, that being said, since turning pro in 2006, her competitive endeavors have been impressive enough for her to be considered a threat in the pro ranks. As she currently prepares to return to competition at the Tampa Pro, the anticipation is building as to what she will bring to the stage this time around. One thing is for sure, surprises are in store. In fact Nicole is a woman full of little surprises, as I discovered when I spoke to her recently about her life on and off the stage.

[ Leigh Penman ] You have been lying pretty low since last year's Olympia was that all part of your plan?

[ Nicole Ball ] No not at all! I have traveled more this year than any other year so I have been really busy with that, family and also work, just everything that accompanies everyday life.

[ LP ] I believe in your time away from the scene you had quite an eye opening trip overseas, care to tell us about it?

[ NB ] I was asked to be an honorary guest over in India. While I was there I talked about health, nutrition, and the lifestyle of bodybuilding and fitness. I did TV broadcasts, videos and I also took part in judging a show over there. I also took time to visit and play with the children at an orphanage, and I brought them sporting gifts and 5lbs of lollipops!

It was truly an amazing trip and something that will be with me forever as the people of India are like no other, so warm and welcoming.

[ LP ] You are a native to Canada, although you have recently been training in New York, which do you prefer?

[ NB ] Yes Canada is home, but having the opportunity to be able to go work out at Bev and Steve's gym in NY (Powerhouse Gym in Syosset) is amazing. That is what it's all about! I don't have that atmosphere in Canada so being there gives me that extra little push. I really like it!

[ LP ] Do you ever see yourself moving to New York?

[ NB ] As of where my life is right now I can't see that happening... but nothing is etched in stone!

[ LP ] Moving on to your diet, I understand that you made some significant changes in your diet in the last year. What were the changes and how do you feel they have impacted you?

[ NB ] Well I decided to stick with the Keto diet through most of my off season allowing myself a clean cheat meal like steak and potato or roast and bread mid week and a cheat day on the weekend to eat carbs, sugars, fats, protein. It enabled me to stay relatively lean and keep my strength high. I think it worked great when it came to helping me accomplish a little more fullness this year which was my goal.

[ LP ] Can you outline a typical day's diet in the off season?

[ NB ] 3 meals in the day all with greens sometimes one with small amount of rice, 2 chicken and one steak or extra lean hamburger and 2 eggs.

    Morning

    Snack

Protein shake before bed and 2 more rice cakes with peanut butter. And once a week I will have DQ Blizzard or cheesecake!

[ LP ] And pre contest?

[ NB ] Right now I am doing 3 days at 12 egg whites, 10 oz chicken, 2 protein shakes.

And 1 day: 2 omega 3 eggs, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 2 shakes, 5 oz chicken, 5 oz buffalo and 1 ounce almonds.

[ LP ] The last time we spoke you were talking about writing a cook book. How is that coming along?

[ NB ] I get asked this question all the time and I guess what it comes down to is that I am a bit lazy! I hit a recipe here and there so it is a really slow process, but I will eventually have everything together!

[ LP ] Are you a believer in supplements?

[ NB ] Without a doubt yes! I am sponsored by Species Nutrition and use all of their products in my diet. I love their peanut flavor 'Isolyze' whey protein, it makes dieting so much easier.

[ LP ] You certainly present a very balanced physique. Is this genetics or careful workout strategy?

[ NB ] I wish I could take full credit for "sculpting" my shape but no of course it is the base of genetics and I have worked with each body part to try and keep great symmetry for the physique I personally find for myself most pleasing.

[ LP ] How do you break up your body parts during the course of a week's training?

[ NB ] I train my weakest body part in the beginning of the week so it's:

[ LP ] Turning to competition, what do you think about the falling number of female bodybuilders competing these days? Do you think they are being slowly sidelined by figure and the new bikini class?

[ NB ] It's unfortunate that some women are going to other classes, but on the upside of the scale lets be thankful that more women in general are getting involved in the industry as a whole. There is too much negativity out there, and we need to find the good in everything we can!

[ LP ] What inspires you to continue in the sport?

[ NB ] When it comes to this sport we all know it is about personal achievement and goals. The road we choose to follow can be a difficult one to travel but once you have this sport in your heart it is worth the adventure. So much can come from this sport if you open your mind up to the gift we all share off the stage, the gift of giving.

[ LP ] Looking at the list of women who have already qualified for this years Olympia, who do you consider being your biggest threat?

[ NB ] Oh gosh, they are so amazing. I will always have so many to look up to in this sport. In terms of my 'biggest threat' I have to say that I don't feel 'threatened' by anyone but myself. Every time I step on the stage it is about my own personal achievements and I can only be proud of what I have accomplished.

[ LP ] Where do you see your long term future in the sport?

[ NB ] Oh I am going to keep on trucking and do the best I can! I would love to continue teaching others the positive side of the sport and what it can do for ones soul and self respect. To be a role model to others and just be the best that I can be every time I appear on stage.
