Back in 1998 I was diagnosed as paraplegic, and was told that it would be physically impossible to ever walk again. That day a part of me died; yet at the same time another part of me was born.
What's the one thing you gain from losing everything? Perspective. At that point, it wasn't about if my glass was half empty or half full, I am just grateful I have a glass.
Weightlifting gave me something to strive for, to succeed in, and in doing so benefited me more then I could have ever expected. Over the next few years I focused intensely on strength training and conditioning my body, and in doing so began to regain some of the sensation in my lower back and legs.
At first, bench pressing kept me motivated because I felt I couldn't do anything else and I wanted to be stronger than everyone. I desired to win bench press competitions in high school, which lead to bench press competitions out of high school and I just kept striving for more.
Then after graduating college I wanted to compete again so I searched "Wheelchair Bodybuilding" and barely found anything. To make things short, I taught myself what I needed to do, flew to Florida and competed for the first time in the 2006 Wheelchair Nationals. That night I thought the world should know about Wheelchair Bodybuilding, I told a few guys and got laughed at for my visions. So when I got home I searched "how to build a website", built www.wheelchair-bodybuilding.com, did a lot of research, hunted down wheelchair bodybuilders and added bodybuilding shows that had Wheelchair Divisions!
I wanted to lead by example so I kept competing, guest posing and doing interviews in hope of bringing more awareness to the sport. Over time I always wondered "why me?" but later realized that the day I almost died I was given a gift, a second chance. Being successful is a journey, not a destination.

If you want something in live, don't think about it, just go for it. It doesn't matter is you mess up, the important thing is that you learn from your mistakes. The only time you fail is when you don't try.
