Why I Got Started
dot

I was always a slim kid and paid no attention to what I ate. After I hit 30 it all caught up with me. I have a demanding job, and I travel a lot. I fly more than 100,000 miles per year and eat in restaurants a lot. It became easy to just say, "Well, I have no control on my food, and it's not possible to get to the gym with my schedule, or when I am on a plane twice per week."

Then when my largest suit didn't fit me anymore and I needed to make an emergency trip to Nordstrom the day before I had to fly to Toronto to a meeting and bought the largest size I ever had; it was a wake-up call. I realized I was just getting bigger and bigger.

I started to work with a trainer, and then she after a few weeks took the before picture I have included. I was feeling really good because I had lost 8 pounds already but when I saw the shots, I realized there was nothing to feel good about, I was fat, and had a long way to go. I sat and cried. And then really got serious.

How I Did It
dot

It took a year and a half to get where I am. I originally started working with her to just get some basic weight loss, 10-to-20 pounds, was more than I could even imagine losing. I started with Weight Watchers online, and worked with my trainer 3 times per week. She encouraged me to really up my cardio, something I have never done.

I booked a cruise to set a goal for myself and to hold myself accountable. I worked really hard and lost 20 pounds in time for my cruise. After the cruise I took it easier on myself, but still kept at the gym and stopped Weight Watchers and started counting calories, fat, carbs, fiber, etc. I lost a few more pounds.

Over the next summer I slacked off a bit and always had a goal to compete. So I stayed rather static for a while until I made the decision in October of 2009 to enter a competition. At that point I was still just under 30% body fat and about 136 pounds. With 5 months to go, my trainer helped me with diet; we did carb cycling, training and lots of cardio. At one point I was doing an hour session twice per day on the treadmill.

Now I am focusing on a new competition, and cardio has decreased to 30 minutes 4-or-5 times a week and more weight training. But the weight has not come back on.

I still live in Vancouver and work in Alaska and have to travel to other locations as well. So I am still on the go an awful lot. I have a horse that requires at least an hour or two of my time daily when I am in Vancouver. I have a full plate. But I realized that everything was in my control.

I learned to eat well and pack my own food. It's pretty rare that I let something like needing to catch a plane interfere with the gym these days unless it's a scheduled rest day. I have been at the gym at 4:30 a.m. before catching a flight, or other times hit it at 9 p.m. at night after a full day of flying. I can't imagine doing anything else.

Suggestions For Others
dot

The hardest part is getting going. Once you are going, continuing is natural. I also realized that all the reasons I "couldn't" do it, were just disguises for why I didn't "want" to do it. Of course we all want the end result, but we really need to want the process.

The process is difficult, demanding but rewarding like nothing else. When I thought the weights were too heavy, or I just couldn't do another 30 seconds of cardio, the biggest power I had was to visualize myself in the posing suit and on stage, and I found it in me to keep going. You need to get control of your mind and then the body will follow.
