[ Q ] How did the gym start and why did you decide to begin (or work within) the gym business.
I decided to get into the gym business due to my love of Bodybuilding. At the time when I opened my first gym I was competing as a Bodybuilder and I wanted somewhere to train that was the best in the country and that would also produce the best.

[ Q ] Can you give us a description on what went into opening your awesome establishment?
I originally started out with smaller premises which my wife and I ran together. We refurbished the equipment we purchased ourselves and did everything from training members to cleaning.

I used to let competitive bodybuilders that I knew from the bodybuilding circle train for free in my gym and gave them help with their training and diet. Within 2 years the premises we are in today became available so we moved to expand and have now expanded again within this building and also with the addition of a new branch to the Muscleworks chain in Stoke Newington (1 Tyssen Road, London N16 7NA).

[ Q ] You have had many Pro's train at your gym. Why have so many champion bodybuilders been produced form your facility?
I've been privileged to work with many different competitors and bodybuilders who just have a passion for training. I've always tried to give competitive bodybuilders what they need by providing the right equipment and necessary advice along with moral support.

Having trained and competed as a bodybuilder myself I feel I have an inner knowledge of what it takes and have been able to pass this on to those I've trained.

[ Q ] What sort of people do you attract into your gym?
We obviously attract a lot of professional bodybuilders and competitors to our gym, but we also see hardcore weight trainers and other fitness enthusiasts from other gyms who are serious about their training.

Our members and guests also know that they can get training advice from me personally whenever they need it along with the correct nutritional information and personal diets. I think that it is this close contact with the members on the gym floor that makes Muscleworks Gym a place people want to train at.

[ Q ] What was the hardest part about opening operating your gym?
The hardest part about operating my own gym is keeping myself enthusiastic about bodybuilding and weight training. When you have advised and talked about the same subject 12-15 hours a day every day for the past 20 years you often get think about stopping or taking a break. But bodybuilding and the gym environment has become my life and I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

[ Q ] What makes you competitive over the large gym chains?
Our personal touch and my obsession with perfection (as all of my staff will tell you) is what makes us the best.

[ Q ] How have you been able to remain so successful and how do you hope to remain so?
Muscleworks Gym continually strives to get better and not to become complacent. For example I recently bought a new Leg Press, there was nothing wrong with the old Leg Press we had, the new one is just a better design and has a better movement. It's like buying furniture for my house, I want the best.
My wife say's it's lucky we can't expand the gym floor again as I would never stop buying equipment for the gym. We have recently just spent £4500 on new lockers for the reception area to provide more space for the members, I strive to keep the facilities up to date and in working order and I do everything in my power to do it.
I once sold my boyhood dream car - a De-Tomasso Pantera - so that I could add more equipment to the gym when we first started out. I was obviously heartbroken at the time but the success of the gym and our members is the most important thing to me.
