Have you ever hit a roadblock in the gym, whether it be the frustrating task of increasing your bench press max or running a five minute mile? This is a question that anyone working towards a goal will at some point disgustingly say, "Yes" to.

We try everything to overcome these obstacles from training longer or harder (which can with time actually be counterproductive) to taking breaks in training which could lead to us finding ourselves back at square one (also very counterproductive).

The next time you hit a plateau in your goals or in your workout routine the answer may be where you may have never thought to look; someone else. Furthermore you may not even know the person yet that could serve to be your roadblock buster and... they may not even work out themselves! As a matter of fact your aiding person in reaching your goals would benefit you more if they had not worked out before or if they had just begun a journey of their own into the world of fitness.

You most likely are asking, "How can someone with little or no experience help ME reach my goals?" The answer is quite simple; teach them, give them motivation and support of their own. For those of you searching for the answer of how to better develop yourself and reach your goals read on because the answers are here and you will be helping someone else reach their goals in the process.

    Take Them Under Your Wing

In most any aspect of life when a person hits a standstill on their journey to the top the first thing they think is to better themselves and to focus more on how they can improve the quality of what they are doing.

In many cases this can prove to be successful, but why not try a different approach and take someone else along with you, developing them as well the whole time.

The key here is to find a person (whether they be in the gym already or just starting out) wanting to get into the gym and motivate that person to reach their goals. There is always someone with regards to fitness who would like to excel and to be more confident in the gym but they just do not have the proper encouragement to follow through with a routine.

They say that the best way to enhance your knowledge or a skill is to teach someone else how to do it - in this case it is motivation we are teaching and developing, both in our peer(s) and as a result in ourselves.

In the case that your peer is new to working out, it is important that you establish a goal with them in order to better motivate them and teach them what you know along the way. In many cases when doing this you also learn new information yourself as a different person's goal will cause you to expand your knowledge. For instance, your goal has always been to gain weight and your peer's goal is to lose weight.

See Yourself As Others See You

Finding a "partner in motivation" also requires you to genuinely care about the person's goal and to genuinely want to help them in reaching it. The primary component of this idea is that you should be constantly developing one another with what you have to offer and as a result they will become more confident in working out with and learning from a veteran and you will become more confident in knowing you helped develop them.

Once you take a less experienced training partner under your wing and begin helping them and seeing their results, you will hopefully feel the need to set and maintain an example for them to follow, especially more than you would if you were training alone.

This can be viewed on a daily basis as a father and a son: The father teaches his son how to do certain things at a young age such as mowing the lawn or using certain tools. As a result the son comes to think that HIS dad can do anything, right? Now the dad most likely can not do any and everything but at least when his young son is watching he temporarily feels as though he can!

It is highly unlikely that if you are helping and motivating someone to succeed that they will come to see you backtracking or failing at your goals on a regular basis, you will succeed just as they are with your newly acquired motivation!

Lead Them And Yourself By Example

Many times when people reach roadblocks in their training goals it is because deep down they have become satisfied with their progress, especially if they work out by themselves and do not have someone pushing them further.

When we put ourselves in a position to set an example for others we can not allow ourselves to sit idle in our progress for too long, since you are being held accountable by your new partner to reach your goals you have set.

It is almost always more motivating to know that someone else is watching you on your quest to your goals, whether they be watching in hopes that you fail due to competition or in our case due to the fact they have become a fan of you and what you are doing.

When people do not have anyone either watching or keeping track of their goals other than themselves it becomes easy to lose focus and to fall off in intensity and become un-motivated. It is for this reason that many people have personal trainers, not because they do not know what they are doing but because they need that constant encouragement and extra set of eyes watching them to push them past the finish line.

Be Sure You're Qualified To Lead

While you do not have to be a certified personal trainer in order to help and motivate someone else to reach their fitness goals, it is important in the role of a mentor that you first know enough to actually help the person you take under your wing. The most important factor of this motivational relationship is to remember that although you are serving as a mentor and a source of knowledge in many cases, you must also remember that this relationship is mutual and that the other person is there to help you as well.

None of us will ever know so much that we cannot learn from someone else and this must be realized in order to truly grow and develop yourself as well as the other person during this growing experience: "People never care how much you know until they know how much you care." (Maxwell).

Many people who are striving to begin a fitness regimen are easily intimidated by those with more experience and more developed builds so assuming that you are at this point as a mentor it is important to make the person feel comfortable and to not feel threatened. If your peer is not comfortable confiding in you and looking to you for help, the primary goal we are striving may not be met.

    Conclusion

Everyone has hit points in their training in which they cannot seem to get past a sticking point. As mentioned before these goals can range from cardio goals to raising your bench press max, but no matter the goal one thing remains constant: we must be able to develop and maintain motivation and although we as experienced lifters would like to think so this cannot always be done alone.

I have found from personal experience that some of the most uplifting and motivating moments I have had in the gym were when I helped someone else get closer to a goal; from something as simple as telling someone when asked what the best exercise is in my opinion for the anterior deltoids to actually having a peer work out with you as they strive for their goals.

There have been many days in the case of having someone to mentor that I was not initially as excited about the upcoming workout as I would usually be but knowing that person was counting on me that day to push them closer to their goal was the one factor that got me up and excited all over again.
