Name of Gym: MJ Pilates & Wellness LLC
Name of Owner: Monica Jodi Heiz
[ Q ] How did the gym start and why did you decide to begin the gym business?
Fitness is my passion. Fitness makes me feel good. Fitness brings me joy. I created my studio to share these feelings with others. A place they can come in and leave the world outside and feel what I feel, within themselves.
My mother instilled those values she shared with her father in me and taught me to be kind, love and honor myself for who I am and what I believe in.
It's because of the unconditional love she shared with me and taught me that I opened my studio. I wanted a place to share my love and kindness with others. I needed a place to create those strong energy dynamics I shared with my mother which held my family together and raised me to be the woman I am.
[ Q ] Can you give us a description on what went into opening your awesome establishment?
I can tell you my heart and my intuition went into opening my studio. I trusted my intuition from choosing the paint color to preparing my programming.
A big thanks to my dear friends Michael for painting my studio and Adam for his work on laying the bamboo floor. You guys mean the world to me for believing in my vision. I want to thank the training programs and educators I studied with for creating trainings that step outside the box and challenge what we "know" in the world of Fitness/ Health and Medicine.

The founders of these organizations believe in a better way to health and wellness than drugs. These professionals inspired me to create a place of my own to follow my own rule.
[ Q ] What makes your gym different?
My clients are a direct reflection of me and my work. I take great pride in my clients succeeding, learning and moving forward in their lives using health and wellness as the vehicle. There is no judgment, each person is an individual and I treat them that way - from private clients to group classes - I listen to their needs.
Clients come to my studio to feel, engage and share in my energy. I am a hands on trainer. I use my hands, verbal descriptions and visual cues for clients to tap into their sense to connect to their bodies. I want them to take what they learn from me and apply it to other areas of their lifestyle.
[ Q ] What sort of people do you attract into your gym?
My clients are open minded, social people that like to share and learn. They are all ages and all fitness levels. I say I attract those that want progress, want change and are willing to do the work for it.
[ Q ] What inspires people to train at your facility?
Knowing that they are going to leave feeling alive, free and ready to take on anything! I inspire them - my happiness and energy shines through when I teach them. I encourage them, point out the improvements. I want them to feel good.
I encourage them to explore and create movement in their bodies. I practice what I teach, what I believe. I am a National Aerobic Champion and NPC Fitness Competitor.
[ Q ] What is your educational background?
I have a B.S. Degree in Nutrition and Fitness from Florida State University, AFAA & ACE Group Fitness Instructor, NASM Personal Training, Wellcoaches Wellness Coach, STOTT Pilates Instructor, Metabolic Typing Advisor and Anatomy Trains. I am a 2005 USA National Aerobic Champion, and currently a Fitness competitor and previously a Figure and Bikini competitor.
[ Q ] What special services do you provide?
Along with Pilates and personal training, I am educated in Nutrition, and wellness coaching. I run a program called "Create the Body YOU Want". Included are 2 Pilates classes per week, a 45 minute weekly wellness coaching session, a nutrition plan and daily motivational quotes.
The program is very successful, giving clients the tools needed to be accountable for their choices, make food decisions and understanding what the impact will be, how to plan, prepare, pack foods.
The twice a week Pilates provides structure and a program they need to commit to. I am a "No excuses" kind of woman, and I coach my clients that way - it's one of the tools I share with them.
There is so much information in the media around food/nutrition, exercise, stress and our country's health condition. I send them articles regularly on these topics including genetically modified foods, sustainable coffee with low chemical input.
I show my clients and educate them that there is a better way to health through the foods we eat, supplementation, movement and sharing positive energy.
[ Q ] What is the hardest part about operating your gym?
When I put this much of my heart, soul and passion into it, nothing is "hard". It's a work in progress, following my dream. Nothing feels as good as that!

I Show My Clients And Educate Them That There Is A Better Way To Health
Through The Foods We Eat, Supplementation, Movement
And Sharing Positive Energy.
[ Q ] What makes you competitive over other gyms?
My attention to detail. I want my clients to succeed, learn and progress. My classes are small, maximum of 6 people so I can get my hands on each person.
For my one-on-one training I look, listen and feel the energy of the client when they walk through the door to determine their training for the day.
I listen. Everything shows in their face and body language. Clients always leave feeling refreshed, alive and a sense of lightness. I offer clients that take 2 classes per week 1 free class on the weekend. It's my way of thanking them for staying committed to themselves and my teaching.
[ Q ] How have you been able to remain so successful and how do you hope to remain so?
I love what I do and I love my studio - this is my success. I follow my heart, my passion, my dreams - this is my success. I share this in my studio with my clients through love and kindness - that is my success. I provide a place where people can come to feel good, feel alive and leave feeling the world is theirs.
[ Q ] Any additional thoughts you'd like to share with us?
MJ Pilates & Wellness comes from my heart, my dreams and my passion. It comes from the values my mother instilled in me to be kind, gracious, confident and ambitious.
In 2007 I opened my studio because I want to create a place where passion, creativity, health, wellness, movement and unconditional love is nurtured. The studio is a reflection of my mothers love for me and I can share a piece of that with my students.
I offer pre/post natal classes where mothers-to-be can bond, interact and share with each other. I invite new moms and their newborns in to classes to feel and let go of society's pressures, accepting the crying babies. There is no rule book on motherhood, I want them to share the joys of motherhood with all of us in the studio!
Now 20 years later, our society has created it to be "normal" to treat with drugs - there's a drug for everything, and everyone is on a drug. I believe people can be treated through food, with kindness and unconditional love - this is my passion, my dream my studio.
My clients that sign up for my Create the Body You Want Program I send positive emails to every morning. The idea is to keep them thinking positive thoughts, inspire and encourage them.
My Studio is so much more than a business - it's a place of feeling alive, connecting and sharing. It's the gift from my mother I get to use every day and I love it!
