[ IH ] How long were you in the Army?

[ IH ] Did the the military teach you discipline or did you have that before you went into it?

[ MA ] I already had that going in but it definitely took it to another level.

[ IH ] What was the crappiest job you before becoming a pro bodybuilder?

[ MA ] That would probably be when I worked for Adelphia Cable and I had to climb phone poles in the dead of summer here in Florida to work on the lines. That sucked big time! Did I mention I was also contest dieting while doing that job.

[ IH ] Ouch that sounds brutal. What made you compete in your first show back in 2001?

[ MA ] The head trainer at the gym where I was working out at was IFBB Pro Dave Marinelli. He convinced me that I should try competing because he believed I had the genetics to go far. With his help I figured I'd give it a try.

[ IH ] Looking back on that show what do you think was your biggest rookie mistake?

[ MA ] Believe it or not, Dave covered all the bases and I was totally prepared. I actually won the show.

IFBB Pro Mark Alvisi is here to talk about the top 10 myths of muscle building.

[ IH ] You took some time off between 2003 and 2006. What was your career focus at that time?

[ MA ] After I started competing in 2001 I was hooked and by 2003 I realized that competitive bodybuilding was a very expensive hobby. I was personal training at the time and I decided to focus on building that business and come back to competing when I could do it right.

[ IH ] Are you still doing that or has bodybuilding been your full-time job since turning pro?

[ MA ] I have worked for Gaspari Nutrition as a sponsored athlete for close to three years and that is my full-time job.

[ IH ] How has life changed for you since becoming an IFBB Pro or has it?

[ MA ] Since turning Pro I travel quite a bit more as an athlete attending contest, vitamin store events guest posing.

[ IH ] Coolest moment for you in competing/bodybuilding so far?

[ MA ] Winning the overall at the 2009 NPC USA's was a dream come true.

[ IH ] How did you get noticed and ultimately sponsored by Gaspari?

[ MA ] I had worked in the industry since 2001 with various sports nutrition companies. The national sales manager let me work for Gaspari at the Arnold Classic a few years ago and they really liked my work ethic. After the Arnold I started doing demos for them in Florida.

[ IH ] You're one of Gaspari Nutrition's main athletes and featured in many of their ads. Does that help motivate you or add more pressure to your contest prep?

[ MA ] I don't really feel any pressure. I know what I have to do to be one of the best and I'm always up for the challenge to improve every time.

[ IH ] Many bodybuilders don't have sponsorships. What do you feel is your best asset that keeps you on the Gaspari roster?

[ MA ] Rich Gaspari built his career and company on hard work and he expects the same from his team. I believe they appreciate my work ethic and feel I represent to brand well.

[ IH ] Where would you tell young bodybuilders to look for advise on training, nutrition and supplementation?

    [ MA ] Bodybuilding.com of course!

[ IH ] Bonus Points for Alvisi. You'll be making your pro debut at the Europa Dallas show. I heard some rumblings that you are going to be significantly bigger. What did you weigh when you turned pro at USAs and what do you think you'll be in Dallas?

[ MA ] I weighted in last year at 216 lbs. I think I'll be about 8 lbs heavier in Dallas.

[ IH ] What areas have you focused on in the prep leading into this show?

[ MA ] Overall size, fullness and more detail in my back.

[ IH ] One of guy you'll face at the Dallas who is also making his pro debut is Cedric McMillan. What will give the USA champ the edge over the Nationals champ in Dallas?

[ MA ] Cedric has a great physique and I really like him as a person as well. He is a really down to earth guy and very cool. He is much heavier than me so my game plan is to be very conditioned, full and round to give the illusion of being much heavier.

[ IH ] You've dethroned guys bigger than you because of your conditioning in the past. Do you feel this will be the ticket again in the pros?

[ MA ] Yes, all things being equal, the guy that is the most conditioned usually gets the nod.

[ IH ] Do you write down your meals for the day/week?

[ MA ] Not anymore because I have an application on my iPad that I enter all my meals in every day to keep track of them. I used to write it all down in the past.

[ IH ] How often do you visit the grocery store? Is it one trip and you're set for the week or is a daily visit?

[ MA ] LOL....at least every other day if not every day. I like my food as fresh as possible. I hate leftovers.

[ IH ] How often do you take digestive enzymes - before every meal?

[ MA ] I take them with every meal that has chicken or beef.

[ IH ] Do you feel training twice a day has helped you grow this contest prep?

    [ MA ] Absolutely.

[ IH ] Any tips on how to make Tilapia and/or orange roughy not taste like cardboard?

[ MA ] I just add lemon and lime juice and some salt and broil it in the oven for 8 minutes each side.

[ IH ] How much water do you consume in a day?

    [ MA ] Two gallons.

[ MA ] Hmmmm...good question. I'd have to run that by my coach and sponsors to get their input.
