 Why I Got Started

When I found out I was pregnant I vowed to stay healthy, eat right and exercise throughout my pregnancy. Well, that did not happen. At the beginning of my pregnancy my mother also had been recently diagnosed with cancer. Little did I know my mother would go downhill so fast and would pass away two weeks before my baby's birth.
Through my pregnancy I spent most of my time in the hospital with my mother or else at home taking care of her. I cherish every minute of it too, but it was also stressful. I dealt with this stress by eating. When I was at the hospital I ate cafeteria food all day and snacked all day. And I was not trying to make healthy choices. When I was at home I was getting fast food or eating all the baked goods family and friends were bringing every day.
By the time I gave birth to my daughter I had gained 50 pounds, lost my mother, and was very depressed. I felt and looked unhealthy. I knew it was going to be hard enough to deal with the loss of my mother and I did not want to have to deal with feeling miserable because of my weight too. I decided to take action right away. I had always dreamed of competing in a figure competition so I decided I was going to do one in 8 months and nothing could stop me!

 How I Did It
I had to wait 6 weeks until I got a doctor's release to start working out. The first thing I did was take my progress pictures and created a Bodyspace on bodybuilding.com. I knew I would not be able to afford a trainer right away so I decided to use the forums and articles to help me with my diet. I knew a bit already about lifting weights. So I put together my own diet from everything I learned on the site. My husband helped me with my workout routines.
As soon as I got my doctor's clearance I was in the gym. I started lifting 5 days a week, doing cardio 4 days per week, and eating clean. The weight then started coming off. I researched and learned everything I could about figure competitions. I took progress pictures every month and always posted them on my Bodyspace. I always received such kind and motivating comments on my progress from other members. This kept me focused, determined, and motivated.
I pushed myself harder and harder in the gym every day. I did not let anything stop me. I was able to hire an amazing trainer, Team Wilson, who really helped me with my last 4 months of contest prep.
My first figure competition was 8 months after the birth of my daughter on May 15, 2010. I placed first in the first time figure and second in the figure open at the 2010 Mr/Mrs Natural Illinois and Great Northern Bodybuilding and Figure Championships. I fulfilled my goal and dream and am happier than ever. I want to go on and keep competing and live a healthy lifestyle not only for myself but for my beautiful children. I want to set an example for them and teach them the importance of health. Your body is a temple and you need to treat it like one!

 Suggestions For Others

Life is not always easy. If you have a dream, go for it. If you stray from your goal, pick yourself right back up. There were many times in my journey were I cheated on my diet or wanted to quit, but instead I picked myself back up and got back on track. Stay focused and ALWAYS stay positive!
