 Why I Got Started

I was tired of being fat and making women run away from me in disgust. Also I wanted to serve my country and do something with my life exciting and be apart of something bigger than just myself.

 How I Did It
When I first started (December 2005) I could only run 1/10 of a mile before getting exhausted. I slowly built on that, and worked my way up to 2/10 of a mile, 3/10th, etc. When I could finally run 1 solid mile, I started going for time. I also added weight training at this point, just a rusty old workout bench outside in the grass behind the shed kind of deal. I did some basic lifts like bench press, military press, deadlifts, squats and curls.
When I got myself down to about 300 pounds, I started working with an Army Recruiter out of Lake City, Fla. (Thank you so much if you read this, SGT Robinson) and I continued to run harder, and push myself. They got me down to about 270 pounds working with me over the course of about 2 months.
I joined the Army (May 2006) through a special program which tested my cardiovascular strength by stair stepping to a beat as well as a push-up test. I passed with flying colors. Dispite my size, this big man had heart! I weighed in at 268 pounds!
Between Basic Training and AIT, I got down to about 230-240 range (November, 2006). After that, I continued my quest for health and fitness through Army PT and my passion for bodybuilding. My last weigh in, which was yesterday as I type this, I was 220.
I always tell my battle buddies who want to workout with me, "Bodybuilding is not a sprint, it's a marathon. It's a way of life."

 Diet
I follow a very simple diet, but it works for me and some of my friends who have tried it as well. I always pick healthy foods to eat. My carbs are higher in the morning, then taper off throughout the day. I eat every 2-3 hours and drink a gallon of water per day. Once per week, I allow myself one cheat meal. Here's an example of my daily diet:

 Training
I follow a program called Muscle Confusion Chaos. It's basically 2 weeks of powerlifting style work, followed by 2 weeks of bodybuilding type work, then repeated. On top of that, I also do whatever kind of exercise my Army PT throws at me. My Army work is done in the morning, and usually consists of running for 30-40 minutes, sprinting, pushups, sit-ups, dips, and pullups. In the afternoon is my weight training workout. I follow this routine Monday through Friday.

 Suggestions For Others
As the King himself would say, "Ain't nothin' to it, but to do it!" - Big Ron Coleman - Take before and after photos. It's very motivating to see the results you've made throughout your transformation.
- Don't start by training with too heavy of weights. Countless times I've seen guys go in the gym to try and break world records when they just rolled off the couch. Start off light and build your way up slowly. If you go too heavy, you risk getting burnt out and injuring yourself. Slow progression is the key.
- Never give up. If you get injured, keep your head up and don't quit. It took me 3 months to recover from my shoulder injury, but I didn't spend that time feeling sorry for myself.
- Never forget where you started out at. Keep your before pictures in a place where you will always see them, then look in the mirror and do a most muscular pose. Enjoy the new you, you earned it.
