It's show time once again. One week to go and my good friend Mark Tilden and I are heading to Salt Lake City to compete in the NGA Pro Western America on November 2nd. It will be our second Pro show. We will have the honors of competing with the likes of Robert Green and a few other top-notch bodybuilders. Mark is coming off his first pro win. In June he won the overall at the NGA Pro Atlas. It was a hard fought battle against myself and several other quality athletes. I took a close second and had a great time.

Preparing For The Contest

My show preparations began in September. I should have started in August. Training fairly heavy in June and July, I managed to thicken up my physique some. I did sneak in a couple of mini vacations with my family, which we all needed badly.

Two days a week of spinning and two days of running kick-start my metabolic rate. I get this out of the way at 4:00 in the morning. Oh yeah. I also bike 8 miles to work and 8 miles back home. That also counts for some additional caloric expenditure. Then I train one major muscle group during my off-hours of personal training. My rep range has stayed at 8 to 12 as heavy as I can go. I keep one semi power-lifting move in my training program.

Cycling Carbs

You have got to keep your meat and potatoes around to build your base. Carbs intake was kept at 800 for four of my training days. Then I would bump them down on the other days, and load up on creatine. My protein intake is consistently high although my meals are not always from solid food. With the help of RTDs (ready to drinks), a great pre-made protein supplement, I was always able to get my daily quota. I don't cycle my protein up and down like I do my carbs. There's no need to.

The last three weeks I cut my carbs in half and really start getting lean. The only fat I'm getting is a spoonful of peanut butter in my oatmeal every morning. I only have a week left and I still need to lose three more pounds. I'm going to stop doing cardio and just pose 2 times a day and practice my routine. I've bumped my total calories down. We'll see if that does the job.

The New Sganzini

It's been very challenging to train for this show. My wife gave birth to our second beautiful baby boy, Lucas James Sganzini on September 3 at 4:00am. Both Cole (our two year old) and Luca keep us very busy. We are also relocating our home and my personal training studio, so we have been incredibly busy.

My wife has been a huge help with all this. I'm very thankful for all she has done. I'm looking forward to getting this show over with so I can enjoy the holidays and all the good food that comes along with it. We both have a sweet tooth and love satisfying it together.

Yours truly,
