This weekend several competitors will hit the stage in Charleston, South Carolina hoping to make their place in NPC history. Who will stand out and who will get left in the dust? Well, find out on April 28, 2007. The 2007 NPC JR USA competition is being held at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center once again. This is an incredible venue for the competitors and the fans. Embassy Suites, the host hotel, is shouting distance away from the venue, which makes it convenient for every one in attendance.
It's also located close to the airport, which is also nice, especially for people like me with flights leaving before the butt crack of dawn. This year Mona Vie is the presenting sponsor with Gaspari Nutrition stepping up as the title sponsor.
The quiet giant, Branch Warren will be the IFBB Pro posing for the fans. Branch was the guest poser in Colorado in March and looked great there. Branch is currently a couple weeks out from the IFBB New York Pro show and should be in sic condition in Charleston. I caught up with Tres Bennett, the NPC promoter of this event, and he assured me that this show will be top notch. I attended this show two years ago and can attest that it is a very well run show. Tres and his team take care of everyone and treat them will class. The great Lonnie Teper aka "The Swami" will be at the podium. A few competitors certainly walk away with a new nickname. Lonnie is part of the "experts" trio but we'll be missing the most amusing character, Ron "Yogi" Avidan (myself being the third stooge). As you can see the number of figure competitors continues to grow as the female bodybuilding and fitness drop. There are two IFBB pro cards up for grabs for the figure women, which could account for part of the large numbers. I asked Tres how he would address so many figure competitors. He had this to share, "As usual the Figure competition is off the hook. We were looking at nearly 40 girls a class w/ the 4 class system, so we were forced to break it out into 6 classes. Which means there will be two more girls w/ a shot at the 2 "Pro Cards." I was a little surprised at the lower number of male competitors but Tres assured me that, "Although the Men's BB #'s are low there is some heavy competition in the Lt Hvy, Hvy, and S-Hvy classes." A number of IFBB Pros have competed in the NPC JR USAs. A few names bodybuilding fans might recognize:
I'll be at the show covering the event and look forward to another great show. If you're in attendance make sure you head into Charleston and enjoy some of the best seafood around.
