2007 Iron Man Review - Press Conference, Prejudging, Finals And More!

This was my 4th year attending the IRON MAN and the weather was great. This show is like a local NPC show... Here is a quick rundown on how everything went including the BodySpace party. Check it out!

Praise the Rain Gods for taking a week off from this year's IRON MAN Pro.

The past three years have been pounded by rain but this year one could not have asked for better weather and a better kick off to the year.

This was my 4th consecutive year attending the IRON MAN and it was definitely the best in regards to weather. This show is like attending a local NPC show but you're watching pros. It has a friendly atmosphere and it is the official beginning of the IFBB Pro schedule.

I arrived a day early and headed to Venice, "The Mecca" with Ron Avidan. We put together a fun little video along the way and had the ever popular "Bob Bowl". Well, I didn't indulge in the Bob Bowl as I was chosen for the pancakes. We caught up with Hidetada Yamagishi who was there eating and is always a friendly guy.

The Press Conference

Friday was the press conference which was is always entertaining. Lonnie Teper, the emcee of the event, always adds his colorful commentary - One of the funnier moments was him pointing out a Japanese Elvis look alike.

Most of the competitors didn't want to show any previews but the few that did looked pretty sharp. The expo had a great turn out on Friday and lots of happy sponsors with the number of people.

Pre-Judging

Saturday the prejudging went well with the exception of a people wanting more callouts. There was a bit of confrontation about the judging and what was accomplished from it will be seen in future shows.

Many people wanted to see the 3rd place competitor compared with the 6th place guy. The shock in the callouts to me was Eddie Abbew. This is a guy who wasn't cracking the top 10 in shows last year and now here he is in the top callouts. Prejudging went quick and it was clear that Toney Freeman would be victorious.

The NPC Figure show seemed to have fewer competitors this year. It is one of the higher profile shows and I'd encourage any woman looking to gain exposure to do this show. The winner receives a shoot with Iron Man's photographer Michael Neuvex.

The Expo

Ron and I roamed the expo a bit more and met up with various people to get them on video. The ladies at the Muscle Milk booth were cheerful and had a constant line of people trying their popular products.

The Finals

Toney Freeman:

The finals went well and the top five was to be expected based on the morning's callouts. It wasn't without some controversy. Toney Freeman was the clear winner. He was good, not great but look for him to tighten up and continue to get better going into the Sacramento Pro and The Arnold Classic.

Mark Dugdale:

Mark Dugdale in second was a bit of a surprise to me. Mark "The Family Guy" Dugdale as I refer to him is one of the nicest, genuine good guys in the industry. He always has shredded wheels but he seemed to lack a bit of detail in his back. I had Mark in third.

Eddie Abbew:

Eddie Abbew in third - I don't get it. He looked good but this guy is missing the wheels. From the front his legs are flat and lack thickness. His legs are similar to Omar Deckard and I feel Omar has a better upper body.

Those two should be compared. I didn't think Eddie should have been in the top 5.

Silvio Samuel:

Silvio Samuel placed fourth and the crowd was not happy. I'd have to agree with the displeasure of the fans. I had him as high as second. This guy was diced! He needs to control his stomach on his posing but he has great round muscle bellies and looked great.

Marcus Haley:

Marcus Haley in fifth was a gift as well in my opinion. Marcus also needs to control his stomach as every pose you saw his stomach protruding and it detracted from his physique. Marcus is qualified for the Olympia and in the mean time should work on his upper chest.

Others:

I thought Hidetada Yamagishi should have been in the top 5. The guy put on some size, was in great condition and should have been compared more to the top guys.

Ahmad Haidar was in excellent condition and should have also been compared to the top guys. He was tighter and lighter than we've seen him in years past and it would have been good to see him compared to the others.

Sergey "The White Russian" Shelesto - This guy is big and complete, he lacked the conditioning he needed to be in the top five but was definitely top 10 material.

David Henry was out of the top five and the one guy many thought would be battling it out for the title. He has put on some size but lacked conditioning this time out that we've come to expect from David. David's legs still hold him back from being complete but his back is one of the best in the biz.

The show was a ton of fun and it was great to catch up with many familiar faces. It was back to the snowy Denver weather and leave sunny California behind. Another Iron Man in the books and a job well done by John Balik and his crew.

BodySpace Party:

The one new addition I nearly forgot to mention was the Bodybuilding.com BodySpace Party. This was a fun event for everyone in attendance and helped people meet fellow bodyspacers and have some fun before the show. Great idea and good times were had by all. Check out the video and photos from the party.
