I generally consider my self up-to-date on scientific research related to the efficacy of performance enhancing supplements. There are millions of supplements on the market today, and frankly, most of them aren't worth the price of the bright-colored wrappers they're printed on. However, every now and then research will support a supplement, both regarding its effectiveness and safety.
A couple years ago, a student of mine asked me what I thought of beta-alanine. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't know anything about it. I did some research and found out that beta-alanine is one of those few supplements that has received some scientific support, especially if its taken with creatine.
Essentially, beta-alanine has a "creatine enhancing" effect, meaning it's a worthwhile purchase if you're looking to improve the size, strength, and work capacity of your muscles.
I try not to be blinded by research. Sometimes the research is wrong or conducted poorly, so I always try things out myself before recommending them to someone else. Athletic Edge Nutrition's IntraXCell appears to be one of the highest quality beta-alanine products on the market.

As a dietary supplement, take one serving twice daily. IntraXCell may be taken with or without food. Food may dampen the prickling/flushing effect that some people experience from beta-alanine.
On Training Days: Take one serving 15-20 minutes prior to exercise (can be conveniently taken with Pre-Workout formula SteelEdge) and take one serving post workout.
On Non-Training Days: Continue to take two servings daily with food.
For best results, use IntraXCell daily for a minimum of one month to optimize intracellular muscle carnosine levels. Performance benefits from this product will become noticeable in your workouts within 1-2 weeks, and will continue to become stronger for the first three months as intracellular carnosine levels continue to increase. To fully maximize its benefits, we recommend individuals stay on it for a full three-month cycle.

I took IntraXCell in conjunction with a creatine monohydrate supplement. I noticed a considerable increase in my ability to push through last reps, and put on a couple pounds of muscle throughout the month I was on it. I won't discount the placebo effect here.
Knowing that I should be able to push through last reps given my supplement scheme was definitely a motivational factor. This may be a simplistic outlook on it, but I don't care if it helped for physiological or psychological reasons. The bottom line is it helped boost performance.
As a fair warning, you may experience some tingling or a prickly sensation shortly after you take it. It didn't really bother me, but I was glad I was forewarned (details on bottle) before hand, as that feeling probably would have raised a flag in my mind.
As far as I know, there aren't any side effects to beta-alanine supplementation. At $29.99/3-month supply, IntraXCell is as affordable as supplements come. Different people have different responses to supplements. I don't put my stamp of approval on many types of supplements, but I think IntraXCell has some merit as a performance enhancer.
