Warning: Your Priority List Must Be In Order To Stay On Top!

As a working mother of three, it's not easy to compete, or even stay in shape. Believe me, I could find many excuses why I can't train. Here's a look into my life and what I do to stay on top. Check it out.

Article Summary:
  • As a working mother of three it is no easy chore to stay in shape.
  • Finding time to work out is sometimes difficult, but always possible.
  • Getting help from those around you is sometimes necessary.
  • Have you ever done something that you never thought you could do? Or have you only smiled at the thought of doing it? ... How many times?

People constantly ask me, "How do you do it?" I don't really have a simple answer, so I just answer, "I just do." Maybe it is age. Maybe it is maturity. Maybe it is encouragement from those around me.

The point is; anything is possible if you put your mind to it, but the only one that can make things happen is you. Whether it is to lose 10 pounds, become more active or compete in a bodybuilding competition, the circumstances remain the same.

As a working mother of three active children, it is no easy chore to compete, or even stay in shape for that matter. Believe me, I could find many excuses as to why I can't make it to the gym or fit in my exercise time.

Having set a goal and an objective in my life to stay active and fit, I hold this challenge as my own. It is something I do for me. Most of my daily life is consumed by taking care of those around me. I get the kids up and ready for school. I make breakfast and prepare lunches. I get them to school and then go to work myself, as a gifted education specialist.

While at work I am at the mercy of my students, trying to pour as much knowledge and challenge into their academic schedule. After work I get the kids, complete homework, get them to their activities and prepare and feed them dinner.

By this time it is time for nightly reading, bathing, teeth brushing, and sleep. Now it's my time right? Far from it. This is when I straighten up, wash clothes, grade papers and plan and possibly get a little time with my husband.

My days and nights are planned to the max! There is not much mommy time involved. That is why I squeeze in whatever I can in the down time. I wake at 4:45 a.m. to get my cardio in before the kids get up and get my workouts in between activities or after I put them down to bed.

If I cannot fit it in, I have let myself down. I have not given myself the gift of my time. I do not depend on anyone else to get this time in. I do not expect anyone to alter their plans so that I can get it done. This is my responsibility, and if I can't get it done, then it is my fault.

Planning your days ahead of time is crucial. Especially with three kids doing karate year round and one additional sport per season, it is necessary to plan out my days ahead of time. Finding that hour to squeeze in a workout is sometimes difficult, but always possible.

Efficiency is another trait that needs to be enforced. I have become a master at multi-tasking. While cooking dinner, there is so much else you can be doing! You can empty the dishwasher, give a spelling pretest, practice math facts with your child and start packing lunches for the next day.

With even the most negative of surroundings, whether from work or home, keeping a positive outlook on your goal is probably most important.

As horrible as the circumstances may be, having that one goal for yourself can make the difference, because no matter what happens outside of your goal setting, you have maintained the focus on you, even if for only one hour of the day.

If you don't have yourself ranked at the top of your priority list, your chances of accomplishment will decrease significantly. You may not have control over the outside circumstances, but you always maintain control of your goal. It too must be looked at from a positive perspective. After all, it is for you.

Last, getting help from those around you is sometimes necessary. It is something I am still learning to deal with. I am extremely independent, and love this quality, but I tend to put too much on my plate. Sometimes I can't do it all alone. Delegating others, friends or husband to drop off, pick up, or take care of is sometimes necessary.

You have to put yourself at the top of your priority list. Reaching a goal, achieving something you never thought was possible, and allowing yourself to do something that is for you and you only is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself.
