Jamie Filers 2009 Olympia Figure, Fitness, & Women's Bodybuilding Pre-Judging Review!

Another year, another Olympia, another solid block of competitors on the women's side. With that said, here's an inside look at who looked good (and who may be a dark hose) in this year's show. Find out more!

Another year, another Olympia, another solid block of competitors on the women's side. With that said, here's an inside look at who looked good (and who may be a dark hose) in this year's show.

My observations are based on what I've seen so far at pre-judging. But as you know, in our sport, 12-24 hours can change a physique drastically. Female bodybuilding and Fitness finals take place tonight (Friday), with the Figure Olympia finals tomorrow night.

This is the 7th year of the Ms. Figure Olympia contest, and it definitely promises to be a race to the finish. Davana Medina conquered this show 3 years in a row (for its three inaugural years), with Jenny Lynn taking over for her own two year consecutive reign.

Last year, Jennifer Gates beat out Gina Aliotti (the perennial favorite) to win the 2008 Ms. Figure Olympia competition. This year, it's anyone's game; Larissa Reis, who is just coming off a win at the 2009 Atlantic City Pro show, and Monica Brant, who will compete until she's on her death bed (yet STILL look good) are two that come to mind.

However, with Jenn Gates and Arnold Classic champ Zivile sitting out this year's competition, who knows what tomorrow night will hold. We also can't leave out Ms. Aliotti, who is probably hungrier than ever for the title at this point, after being denied twice in a row (at the Arnold this year, and last year's Olympia).

As well, Nicole Wilkins-Lee, Jessica Putnam and Heather Mae French (among others) have all faired EXTREMELY well for themselves on the IFBB professional circuit so far this year, so look out for them.

  • Aliotti, Gina: 1st callout in one piece round (totally expected this; she's hard and sharp yet extremely feminine).

  • Brant, Monica: Seasoned pro. Always the consummate professional onstage despite whatever politics surround her name.

  • Chin, Krissy: Her fourth show this year, and she doesn't look any the worse for wear.

  • French, Heather Mae: Looks like participating in the new Lingerie Football League hasn't hindered her physique (and if it has, she's covered up the bruises really well). 1st callout in one piece round.

  • Fry, Amy: Extremely lean. 1st callout in one piece round.

  • Richardson, Kristal: 1st callout in one piece round.

  • Roundtree, April: Height advantage. Can't help but notice her

  • Roy, Sherlyn: Great poise and confidence. The flower in her hair was a nice, unique, feminine touch.

  • Stern, Erin: 1st callout in one piece round. Beautiful long legs that seem to keep going.

  • Wilkins-Lee, Nicole: Beautiful. Looks a little soft, but as we know, in figure it's hard to determine what the judges are looking for on any given day. 1st callout in one piece round.

Fitness: 1 & 2 Piece, 45 Second Routine
dot

This is the Fitness Olympia's 15th anniversary, and just like the Figure Olympia, it promises to be a battle. The big name that comes to mind for fitness is Jen Hendershott; however, Jen has chosen to sit out this show, despite her wins at the 2009 Arnold and the 2008 Ms. Olympia - The sport's two most prestigious competitions.

Hoping to take Jen's crown are Julie Palmer and Tracey Greenwood who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively, behind Jen at the 2009 Arnold Classic. Both women are unbelievably spunky and creative with their routines, as well as being full of energy and having amazing physiques; the combination of which will no doubt make the judges' decision difficult this time around.

Rumor has it, Trish Warren has a new improved routine that is sure to impress. Not to be discounted though, is Canadian powerhouse Mindi O'Brien who placed 10th at the Arnold this year, and 9th at the Olympia last year.

But from what I hear (I'm from Canada, so we're kind of biased towards Mindi and Myriam Capes), she's been training her butt off, and hopes to bring and even better and tighter package this time around. Here's hoping the judges give her credit where credit is due.

  • Capes, Myriam: Absolutely beautiful. Full round muscle bellies. Looks VERY full and thick from the back. 2nd callout. Extremely athletic routine.

  • Da Silva, Regiane: THICK upper body and beautiful, rounded shoulders. Hers she is shredded and striated: almost big enough to be a bodybuilder; she just has that sort of structure that stands out against the others just because of sheer size. ENERGY, right off the bat with her routine with lots of flexibility.

  • Duncan, Nicole: Slightly soft abs and shoulders. Nothing really stands out. Her routine may be what saves her.

  • Durkin, Tina: Great quad separation and confidence on stage; really knows how to hold herself. One of the smaller girls (size wise) in the line up. She was requested in the 1st callout and again the1st callout in 2nd round. Music was mixed well, but routine wasn't anything special.

  • Garcia, Adela: Poised. Here's hoping her final fitness routine carries her through because this isn't the best we've seen her. She also got 1st callout in 1st round and 1st callout in 2nd round. This routine was reminiscent of the Adela of old, like the Europa.

  • Greenwood, Tracey: She was a little blocky in the abs. V-taper could afford to be a little more exaggerated. 1st callout in 1st round. 1st callout in 2nd round. Some great strength moves in the routine. She's bringing her A-game tonight.

  • Johnson, Tanji: Great conditioning. Nice lines. 1st callout in 1st round, but they didn't keep her up there very long. They either saw what they were looking for right away, or didn't find what they were looking for. 1st callout in 2nd round. Her energy is infectious and she moves like there are no bones in her body.

  • Meteraud, Shannon: Incredibly lean. They LOVED her at the Team USA, and her conditioning has only gotten better since. 2nd callout. Routine was impressive, but nothing we haven't seen before.

  • O'Brien, Mindi: Looks like she's toned down her muscularity a little bit, but without sacrificing conditioning, shape or symmetry. Her shoulders stand out, but not too much. 3rd callout. LOVED THE ROUTINE! It was full of strength moves and flexibility feats, and also creative and sexy.

  • Palmer, Julie: Extremely lean. Face is almost TOO gaunt. 1st callout in 1st round. 1st callout in 2nd round. Will definitely rival the Top 3 for best routine.

  • Warren, Trish: Incredible shape and conditioning. Lots of momentum going into this show. Her vascularity is amazing; she's clearly done her homework and filled out really well. Great combo of strength moves and transitions into dance moves.

Bodybuilding - 2 Piece
dot

One name comes to mind when you think Ms. Olympia - Iris Kyle. Ok, so you may also think Lenda Murray, Kim Chizevsky and Cory Everson?but when you think RECENT Ms. Olympia, you SHOULD be thinking Iris Kyle. This woman is the Ronnie Coleman of female bodybuilding.

NOBODY packs more square inches of muscle on their frame than Iris (except maybe Kevin English, but we're talking women here). Iris has won this show the last three years running, and brings and tighter and tighter package every time. The judges know what to expect from her: A fine balance of shape, conditioning, size, conditioning, symmetry and conditioning.

Did I mention conditioning? I don't want to sound biased, so I'll also mention that Nicole Ball and Yaxeni Oriquen also have momentum going into this show based on their placings at IFBB pro shows this year. But of course, all of the competitors are Olympia caliber, or they wouldn't have qualified in the first place.

So it could be anyone's game this time around. Cathy LeFrancois and Isabelle Turell are not in the show this year due to an elbow injury, and leg surgery respectively.

What we won't know until tonight is whether the judges will be going for a more feminine (yet still hard and muscular) look or whether they'll be rewarding straight size and conditioning, irrespective of aesthetics. Head judge, "It's really close between some of the competitors..." - This means it's going to be a tight race.

  • Armbrust, Heather: Incredible V-taper. Her waist doesn't look that narrow, but the sheer size of her shoulders makes it look 24 inches. Really powerful rear lat spread. Feathered quads in the 1st callout. Called out next to Iris Kyle in the final round which is a good sign for her.

  • Aukland, Lisa: Waist is wide, kind of blocky, but has gotten smaller than in past competitions. She won the Atlantic City three times in a row. At 50 years old, this woman is only getting better. Also in the 1st callout.

  • Ball, Nicole: Shoulders are most definitely a stand-out bodypart. Her structure is slightly off, but there's nothing she can really do about it. Good conditioning, but nothing amazing.

  • Cadeau, Dayana: Looks bigger than in past years. Her arms and legs look HUGE. Waist is pretty thick though. Hamstrings are pretty soft and doesn't look in shape; she's killed her lines with her size.

  • Chandler, Tina: Nothing too stand-out.

  • Frankie, Gale: Very thick abs with feathered quads. Great side chest show with hanging hams and a super thick back.

  • Hawkins, Kristy: Great legs. Has sharpened up since the Atlantic City Pro. Needs some work with the abs/thigh shot, but other than looks, looks good.

  • Jennings, Rosemary: MOUNTAINOUS traps with thick, carved abs. She packs a boatload of size on a small frame. I don't know why they kept her lower in the callouts; she looks great.

  • Kyle, Iris: The favorite to win. Beautiful lines from top to bottom with great conditioning, size and symmetry. W-I-D-E from behind; probably unbeatable. Even her back has vascularity. 1st callout: kept in the middle.

  • Laszewski, Debi: Great legs and arms. She was also in the 1st callout.

  • Oriquen-Garcia, Yaxeni: Wide. Her legs look slightly smaller, but more defined. However, is missing some of the lines that the other competitors have (specifically ad/abductors).

  • Pariso, Betty: Boulder shoulders and paper thin skin. One of the only competitors with lines in her glutes. Probably some of the best arms in the line up.

  • Viana-Adkins, Betty: Nice lines and symmetry. Nothing stands out.

Conclusion
dot

After a few hours of prejudging, the women's rounds had wrapped up and had everyone guessing the outcome of this evening. The line-ups seemed tighter than years passed and the confusion on people faces showed. Those faces will have a look of understanding come this evening's finals.
