 Why I Got Started
It was 2007 when I realized I was overweight and needed to start working on my health and fitness. I was a thin girl when I was younger, always active and involved in sports. At the age of 27, I noticed and started caring about what I ate because what I was eating caught up with me. My body was not healthy. My metabolism wasn't as fast as when I was a teenager. I finally woke up to realize I was a woman who needed to work hard to be fit. I had been athletic all my life and worked at a couple of gyms. I played fast-pitch softball, basketball, and used to run and cycle for fun. I maintained a certain weight throughout my late teens because of the sports I played. I missed being fit and having that fast metabolism.
"The freshman 15" showed up during college. I didn't notice the unwanted weight gain until my junior year in college. I went out and abused my body with junk food and alcohol. My diet used to consist of pizza, chips, candy bars, greasy Mexican food, pasta (lots of it), cookies, soda, alcohol and cake. I would drink water on occasion but would have rather have soda or fruit drinks; anything with lots of sugar in it. The combination of overeating, greasy sugar and salt infested food is what made me the way I was and I was not a happy camper. I needed a change and I needed that change as soon as yesterday (as the saying goes).

 How I Did It
At the age of 27, I questioned why I let myself go. I stopped playing sports and had been eating junk food. I didn't like how I felt about myself. My self-esteem went down due to the weight gain and, because I didn't feel good about myself, I turned to comfort foods/junk food. I reevaluated myself and decide to jot down some goals on paper and stick to them. My goals consisted of losing weight, getting toned, competing and regain my confidence. So I signed up to compete at a fitness competition. I set these goals and there was no turning back.
May of 2007, I spoke with IFBB Pro Gina Aliotti and my personal trainer (Kelly Craven). I was on a mission. I was eager and super motivated to live out this dream of losing weight and keeping it off. I worked out 6-or-7 days per week hard, hitting every muscle group. I ate 7 small meals per day. During this change of eating habits and working out again I went through so much emotionally. There were days when I wanted to give up or "pig out." I wanted those fatty comfort foods, as if my body was going through some kind of withdrawals at times. I wasn't in a good mood and irritable. I could walk some days due to the soreness, but I hung in there. I was on my way and I took it day-by-day. Luckily I had a great support system keeping me on track. In 6 months of preparation, I dropped from 145 pounds to 123 pounds and I looked fit. I went from flab to fabulous in 6 months. I competed in my first competition at the 2007 NPC Excalibur in figure. Although I didn't place high, I love how I felt and most of all my confidence was back and I felt great in my own skin again. I felt satisfied and accomplished. I leaned out, and I had abs not flab! I never had abs and it felt great to have them. It was worth every minute to work as hard as I did with the support of those around me. I was immediately hooked on competing and as a result I changed my lifestyle. I was so thrilled at the end of that journey, and was ready set new goals for a new journey.
At the end of October 2009 I decided to set my goal of competing in the new division of NPC Bikini. I registered to compete at the Excalibur on December 5, 2009. I went in looking a lot softer then my 1st competition even though I weighed the same. I placed 7th in my height class. With the help of IFBB Bikini Pro Michele D'Angona I dropped from 136 pounds to 123 pounds in 7 weeks. I came in a lot softer looking but felt great to compete again.
I have met so many great people as a result of competing and choosing a healthy lifestyle. I continue to stay eager to change my body and make it a better "temple" because I only have one. I am looking to compete in 2010 and earn my pro card.

 Suggestions For Others
Surround yourself with other people with similar goals. Stay positive, focused and consistent! Eat small balanced meals throughout the day. I find that women are afraid to lift weights for the fear of getting too big. Don't be afraid. Weights will help give you that lean and toned look.
I give myself daily goals to accomplish and accomplish them, so that I can have a "can do" attitude and never give up.
