Paul had been a successful PT & competing bodybuilder for years. John is a 3 times British champion and IFBB Pro running CNP Professional's technical helpline for nearly a decade. We decided to bring a facility to the UK rarely seen outside of the U.S. Superb equipment and expert guidance on training & nutrition. It was inevitable that we would end up doing this I suppose. Call it fate if you like.
We discussed the concept in New York in 2006 whilst John was doing the NY Pro show. We wanted to open a gym that would simply make your jaw drop, so when we got home, we set about doing exactly that.
Two years of meticulous planning, financial projections, research, fighting red tape & above all sheer determination when most would have just walked away. It was possibly the most stressful thing we have ever done, but we wouldn't change a thing as we have learned so much from the process. Club number two will be easier to plan as a result. We will have five clubs inside of five years at least.
Anyone from the first time gym user, to elite athletes can get a great workout here. We naturally attract bodybuilders & strength athletes, but we also have international track & field athletes, world champion Thai Boxers, strength athletes but mainly general health conscious people fed up of the bull being offered in the big chains. They come here for our reputation, built on getting results.
The place has a real sense of purpose about it. It's something tangible when you walk in. Our own physiques are a big seller, but once again, our reputation for getting results with people over the years is a big factor. Another big factor is the personal touch not found in the corporate chains, everyone one likes to feel appreciated.
We have a team of PT's arriving soon, keep a check on our site for details. As well as this, there's Paul (Nine Pack on the Bodybuilding.com forum & other boards), John Hodgson (IFBB Pro) & Christian (our latest recruit) who is shredded all year round, really knows his game & is a fantastic motivator.
We also have Christine, who does our studio classes. She's one hard taskmaster, but she is a massive hit with the members & she really makes the place feel alive.
Nutritional consultations, sports massage, injury therapy, Reiki therapy, biomechanical & postural analysis. All our members are free to pick our brains whenever they need help.
We see every member joining the club as a compliment to the hard work we have put into setting the place up. Consequently everyone is as notable as the next.
Fighting red tape from the local authority has got to be first on the list. You would think with the UK government agenda on fighting the obesity epidemic, new fitness facilities would be keenly encouraged. Nothing could be further from the truth & we had to fight tooth & nail to just get planning permission. Crazy.
Quality, value & integrity and the personal touch.
Keep offering quality service, the best equipment & advice at a reasonable price. If you keep a handle on the quality, success will follow.
You hear a lot spoken about membership retention in this industry. We firmly believe that the key to membership retention is based around a simple 'win - win' strategy for everyone. Our members get the results they desire, we keep a happy membership base. Too many clubs care only about getting you through the door and care little about your progress once they have your money.
Some clubs rely on the member needing them & so won't actively help them in the hope that they keep paying a membership because they still need to lose weight or get fitter. This flawed approach nearly always backfires. Nobody likes fruitless toil, so the member either stops training altogether out of despondency, or migrates to another club in the hope that things there will be different. They will usually begin the whole cycle again at the new club.
Our approach is different. No empty promises, just sincere, honest advice & guidance that will help you get what you want from your valuable time invested at our club.
We see each member joining as a compliment to our hard work & so we have a duty to help them as much as is possible & make them feel valued. This is where the real 'secret' (if there is such a thing) lies in retaining members. It turns out that the big 'secret' the industry is searching for is something as simple as integrity.
