2007 Iron Man Pro Review - Top 5!

Overall it would have to be said that the 2007 Iron Man Pro was one of, if not the most competitive ever... Five got through and what worthy champions they were. Let's take a closer look at the top five.

The results are in and, as predicted, the big man Toney Freeman came out on top. In a contest such as this, the top three or four, and especially the top two, are usually pretty close. From where I was sitting this was definitely not the case at this show.

Tony looked to be the champion from the very first call out. With thick muscle everywhere and displaying his best condition yet, Tony dominated from every angle, making real competition a battle for second.

The top five athletes seemed fairly placed with real surprises coming in the solid forms of Eddie Abbew and Marcus Haley (three and five respectively), both athletes having made the biggest improvements from the 2006 season.

With a physique lighter and more streamlined than that of the much larger Freeman, though no less perfect, Mark Dugdale took his rightful place at the top of the heap, placing second. Always a man of great promise, it seems Silvio Samuel has finally found the formula that works best for him as he placed a career-best fourth.

This writer predicted that Silvio would place in this position as he has shown that he can make necessary changes and he certainly has the size and shape to rival Dugdale and Freeman. Maybe with a little more size and polish he can finish higher next time around.

Among the many surprises included six-place finisher David Henry's failure to make the cut. Big things were expected from David with most placing him second, if not first. This was not to be his night, however, as, although he did display some excellent improvements in size - most notably in the arms and legs - he also came in a little flat, which distanced him for the top five, who were all in outstanding shape by comparison.

Eryk Bui and Kris Dim are others who might also seriously need to re-evaluate their game plans. These men were also picked to do some damage at this show, based on their past placing's and great physiques. Both placed outside the top ten.

Others from whom big things were expected include Rusty Jeffers, Luke Wood, and Moe El Moussawi. Neither made the top ten. Overall it would have to be said that the 2007 Iron Man Pro was one of, if not the most competitive ever, with so many athletes touted to make the Olympia via this show.

Top Five

Only five got through and what worthy champions they were. Let's take a closer look at the top five.

1. Toney Freeman:

The clear winner, Freeman blitzed the opposition and asserted his authority as one of the new guys to beat in any show he choses to enter. With razor cuts and incredible improvements, especially from the rear, Toney probably made his biggest statement yet at this show.

His V-taper, known as being one of the best in the business, seemed even more pronounced, probably due to his crazy level of conditioning. Possibly Toney was a little down on weight for this show, but his career-best conditioning was well worth any sacrifice in this department.

If he can repeat his Iron Man showing at the Olympia, with perhaps a little added size to compete with Cutler and company, he could make the top six.

2. Mark Dugdale:

A man who I considered to be one of the frontrunners for the top three was Mark "Driven" Dugdale. A committed Christian, Mark blessed the audience with probably the most symmetrical, flawless physique onstage.

Although by no means a mass monster, Mark's physique did not lack anything - all muscle groups complimented one another and balanced well to make a harmonious arrangement of muscle.

Again, nothing stood out as being particularly freakish, but this defies the point of aiming for the kind of balanced development that wins shows. Mark brought this balance, along with some of the best conditioning and presentation skills onstage, and was rewarded with a career-best placing.

3. Eddie Abbew:

What a surprise! 39 year old Eddie has been on the scene for quite some time, placing 10th at the 2001 Iron Man Pro and 12th in this event the following year. Last year he received his then highest placing at the Romanian Grand Prix, finishing fourth. Now he has taken his physique to a completely new level to go one better.

Third place for Eddie was fair, given he has payed many dues since he turned pro in the late 90's. Slowly and steadily he has worked his way through the ranks. Now he is getting the rewards.

At the 2007 Iron Man, Eddie showed dramatic improvements in shape and conditioning, with his usual great size, to edge out some of the more established guys. Looking to be the second largest of the top five, the biggest being the X-man Toney, Eddie impressed with probably the biggest arms and shoulders of these men. Will be interesting to see where he places should he chose to do the Olympia.

4. Silvio Samuel:

Due to his impressive 2006 rookie season, this man received many positive comments from fans and experts alike last year. Many, myself included, were picking him to make this year's Olympia. With his fourth at the Iron Man, he did not disappoint.

Blessed with some of the best thigh sweep in bodybuilding, and full muscle development capped of with near-perfect symmetry, Silvio had some placing him higher than fourth.

I personally felt he had the best physique onstage, but he did not come in as sharp as those before him and this cost him. With improved conditioning and a little fine-tuning here and there this guy could win the 2008 Iron Man.

5. Marcus Haley:

A well-deserved fifth for Marcus, a man many had written off based on his 2006 shaky start. Last year Marcus placed fourth at the Colorado Pro and Eighth at the Europa with a physique that seemed rather flat, did not have much of an impact, and showed glaring weaknesses in the legs department. What a turn around.

The body Marcus presented this year had shown major improvements, possibly more so than any other competitor in the show. Added fullness, crisp conditioning, and improved thigh sweep allowed him to achieve his best result yet.
