2008 Mr. Olympia Review: Exciting Outcome Great For IFBB!

This year's Mr. Olympia was one of the greatest Olympia's of all time. For years the judges have been favoring size over symmetry. It is nice to see some change. Here's my take on a great show!

2008 Mr. Olympia - Greatest Of All Time?

This year's Mr. Olympia was one of the greatest Olympia's of all time. For years it seems that the judges have been favoring size over symmetry. Even though it is amazing to look at the mass monsters like Dorian Yates, Nasser El Sonbaty, Markus Ruhl, Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman and many others, it is nice to see a bodybuilder with a symmetrical look.

For years there has been talk of the judges looking for a more symmetrical look, but it just never happened. This year the rumors came true and symmetry took over. Besides Jay Cutler and Dennis Wolf, most of the mass monsters placed much lower than normal.

I am a huge Jay Cutler fan, and I wanted him to win more then anything. However when Jay stood next to Dexter Jackson there was no denying who the true champion was. Dexter came in harder and more symmetrical than anyone else at the show.

At the climax of the finals when everyone was waiting for Bob to announce this year's champion, I looked at Dexter and knew that if he didn't win that he would have been robbed of the title. When Dexter was announced as the champion, the stands went wild and everyone was shocked that another Mr. Olympia had been dethroned.

Dexter Jackson deserves this year's Mr. Olympia title. I am excited to see what the future of the IFBB holds if the judges start looking for something different. If things keep going the way they did this year, there will be a lot of changes in the bodybuilding ranks.

Phil Heath and Toney Freeman also looked amazing, and both deserved to be in the top five. I did disagree with the order they were placed though. I felt that Phil had an amazing physique, his shoulders were massive and he had great muscle bellies.

Tony had great muscle bellies and a very well rounded physique. Tony had far better legs than Phil did though. Both of them had their strong points, but overall I think that Tony should have been placed above Phil.

Dennis Wolf looked great and came to the Olympia ready to battle. He came in with a very hard and dense look and deserved to be in the top five, however he didn't look better then Tony Freeman.

Dennis has a ton of mass and looks good, but his height takes away from his proportions. His legs are amazing and were some of the best of the night, but the length of his torso and his long humorous bones make his muscles look longer and less round. His arms are huge but don't have much of a peak compared to Tony. I also felt that Tony had a much better chest and back and far better abs.

Other than the placing of those three, I agreed with the judges 100% on all of the other competitors.

Posing Routines

As far as the posing routines, they were amazing. Every competitor had a good routine, but the most memorable ones of the night were done by Melvin Anthony and Darrem Charles.

Melvin showed off his dance skills and amazing flexibility. At the end of his routing he bent over backwards far enough to win any limbo competition and continued flexing while he did it. Then he came back up to a standing position without using his hands at all. It was very impressive.

Darrem's routine was awesome. If anyone tells you that big guys can't move, tell them to take a look at Darrem Charles. He danced on stage while posing and moved very fast with some pretty crazy moves.

At one point he was dancing and moving toward Bob Cicherillo (who was announcing on the side of the stage) fast enough to make Bob step back a little. When Darrem was done dancing he pointed at Bob and they both laughed, it was pretty entertaining.

Conclusion

The Olympia weekend was amazing and was a great experience. It was awesome to see the greatest bodybuilders in the world posing on stage together, and also seeing some of the great bodybuilders from the past in the stands, such as the great Ronnie Coleman, Dorian Yates, Flex Wheeler, Troy Alves, Lou Ferrigno and Mike Kats. I am very happy I went and recommend going to anyone who has a passion for the sport.
