Dr. Chris Lockwood earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and his M.S. in Exercise and Sports Science. Lockwood peer reviewed more than 25 research manuscripts.


Dr. Lockwood is an expert in physique-augmenting and performance nutrition, as well as dietary protein research. He has a proven track record for success within experimental and academic research and peer-review publishing, research and development, innovation and formulation, mainstream publishing, branding and marketing, and business development and management. He is also a spokesperson, strength coach, and nutritional consultant to some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood.

Dr. Lockwood currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer for 4Life Research, in Sandy, Utah, and earned his PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Oklahoma. He holds a Master's degree from the University of West Florida, and received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, from the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida.

It was a life-altering car crash after receiving his business degree and working for E&J Gallo Winery that prompted Dr. Lockwood to proceed down the scientific path that eventually led him to 4Life. Since then, he has been a lead author or co-author on more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific publications, authored and co-authored three book/textbook chapters, written hundreds of consumer magazine articles and columns, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the internationally distributed magazines, "Muscle & Fitness" and "M&F Hers."

Dr. Lockwood's primary area of research has focused on dietary supplement and nutritional interventions, and their respective physiological effects on metabolism, body composition, performance, and health. Most notably, he is regarded as one of the world's foremost experts on the physiological effects from dietary protein, and was the first researcher to explore the chronic effects of different forms of whey protein on body composition, human performance, and safety, concluding that extensive hydrolysates of whey protein provide the most significant effects on reducing body fat while still supporting muscle mass and strength. This research has served as a flagship study from which many subsequent studies have continued to explore the differences between whey protein form, as well as versus other protein sources.

It was Dr. Lockwood's interest in—and continued research on—proteins and peptides that made the offer to join 4Life Research too good to pass up, as 4Life is the industry leader in low-molecular weight peptides from colostrum and egg yolk to support the immune system.

Prior to joining 4Life, Dr. Lockwood served as CEO of AP Nutrition, LLC, a research and discovery/executive business consulting firm specific to companies that supply to or compete within the dietary supplement, fitness, and natural products industries. His clients included ingredient suppliers, university research labs, Bodybuilding.com (as a contributing editor and spokesperson), consumer brands in need of clinical trial and regulatory substantiation, quality assurance, analytical, R&D, and/or branding support, as well as celebrities in need of professional diet and supplement counseling. Dr. Lockwood's articles, videos, and quotes have appeared in such well-recognized health and fitness magazines and websites as "Men's Health," "Men's Fitness," "Fit Pregnancy," Bodybuilding.com, and of course "Muscle & Fitness" and "M&F Hers." One of his greatest honors has been being invited to lecture on protein and performance nutrition to our brave soldiers at the U.S. Army Rangers Airborne School, Rangers Training Brigade, at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Dr. Lockwood's unique industry experience also includes formerly serving as the Senior Category Director of the Diet, Energy, Food, and Beverage category for General Nutrition Centers (GNC), Senior Brand Manager of ABB/Science Foods (formerly owned by Weider Nutrition, Intl.), Vice President of Research & Business Development for the brand and business development consulting firm Gerstner & Associates, and formulating and co-formulating over 100 sports nutrition and related dietary supplements. He is the patent inventor on a protein agglomeration process (US #20040071825), an honorary founding member and former Vice President of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and American Botanical Council (ABC). He co-developed the NSCA's first nationally accredited Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exam by serving an appointed position on its Certification Commission Job Analysis Committee.
