It serves as gasoline to fuel the mental and physical energy needed to scale previously unreachable heights and smash through seemingly unpassable benchmarks. Without it, we would fail to plan, much less work toward realizing our dreams. Its importance cannot be understated.

Determination: as bodybuilders, this quality - in megadoses - is what we need before we can even consider entering the gym and methodically pushing ourselves to the limit in the hopes of gaining slabs of lean muscle in all the right places. Simply put, without determination there can be no motivation to excel and without motivation, climbing out of bed in the morning could become a gargantuan task in itself.

[ David Robson ] Hi Tony. How would you define determination? And do you believe it is a deciding factor in becoming successful, all things being equal?

[ Tony Catanzaro ] Hello David! Well I have to say that without determination you're not going anywhere. Determination is the gasoline of life. People who are naturally determined usually follow and achieve all of their goals. I always said there are two types of people in life: those who say they will and those who do without saying.

There Are Two Types Of People: Those Who Say They Will And Those Who Do Without Saying.

There Are Two Types Of People: Those Who Say
They Will And Those Who Do Without Saying.

I find in life that action does speak louder than words. I find I can be too overly determined at times, which is not such a good thing. For instance, a few weeks ago I was trying to start my pressure washer; it sat in my basement for over two years without being started and it's fairly new. I didn't leave any gas in the tank and added new gas and tried to start it. Long story short, I was trying to start this thing for over six hours. I tried everything to get it started even pulled apart the carburettor, spark plug, everything. It still wouldn't start. I actually blistered up my entire hand trying and trying.

What I'm trying to say is that sometimes in life the universe will be behind you, and if it's not meant to be, the universe will be against you. Using the pressure washer as an example, I was so determined, but what happened? I stressed myself out so bad and ripped up my hand. So being determined is one thing but being overly determined can easily become obsessive.

[ DR ] Determination is a quality that you have used to good effect throughout your bodybuilding career. Just how important is this when planning, and executing what needs to be done to achieve ones goals?

[ TC ] I really don't know where my determination comes from, as I've been like this for as long as I can remember. But this is what goes through my mind when I'm determined to do something. I actually will almost become a machine at that point, I don't think about anything else. It's like I'm programmed to do that one thing and that's all that's on my mind.

So for bodybuilding this is perfect: all my meals and training are done without any fuss and there's no room for "I'm tired today" or "I don't feel like eating this chicken anymore" or "I don't feel like training my abs today" or "doing cardio". None of that! What goes through my mind is "this time I'll be better than the last time, I can't be beat," and "I won't be beat. I will be better than anyone and everyone will be intimidated by me." I know this may sound over-confident but I would rather be over-confident than under-confident any day.

[ DR ] A strong sense of determination enables us to reach down inside ourselves and find energy and commitment that often is not, at first, apparent. What, in your view, is needed to find the determination necessary to do this?

[ TC ] Well I have to say that if you have to dig excessively for determination, you're not going to find it. Determination has to come from within you. If you need someone to motivate you or inspire you, that's fine, but no one on or off this earth can make you more determined. That flame comes from you alone and you control how hot that flame can get.

When I was boy I used to overwhelm myself with feelings of greatness. I used to actually envision myself being the best and having people look at me and saying, "Wow that guy is awesome!" I think that this is the main reason I am where I am today. I don't think I won all those shows and am admired by people all over the world for my body. I feel it came from my heart. And that's where your determination comes from: your heart.

[ DR ] Is determination something we are born with or is it something that can be developed and maintained throughout life? What brings out the determination in you?

[ TC ] Like I said I feel we are all born with certain abilities in life, some of us have strong abilities in some fields, and some have strong abilities in others. No one is born perfect and no one is better than anyone else. We all have our own special gifts and these are what make us special. I feel that I was born with the gift of determination and confidence.

I feel that nothing can stop a person from doing something except that person alone. I, myself, have always been determined and goal-oriented. I feel that life without a goal or mission is no life at all. Getting back to what I said earlier, we have to stop and smell the roses in life otherwise what was the purpose to begin with? I have to find my balance.

[ DR ] You are known for applying 100-percent effort to all that you do and for never giving up despite the odds. When aiming for that final seemingly impossible rep in the gym, what enables you to achieve it?

[ TC ] I feel that you have to see yourself going through the reps already. You have to see yourself achieving it and feeling great about it. You can't grab 130-pound dumbbells and bench press those for 10 reps if you don't feel you can even lift them to begin with. So the power of the mind will ignite the power in the muscle. It's like a spark plug again, with the determination being the gasoline. In order to achieve you must first believe!

[ DR ] What are some of the best examples of determination you can think of and how have you used these to enhance your own ability to push through all of the boundaries you have had to overcome?

[ TC ] Well there are all different levels of determination ranging from getting out of bed in the morning to writing a book. I feel no matter what you're determined to do, all levels become one. I'll explain. The determination that gets you out of bed in the morning is the same determination that gets you into the gym, staying on your diet, doing your cardio, making money, fixing your home, buying a new car, getting a better job.

Determination at any level is still determination. So what I have learned is a person who is not very determined in life never reaches his or her potential and usually blames other people or things for not achieving. I have been through many things, I never lost my determination or drive because I cannot see myself any other way and I cannot live any other way. We are the only ones in life who are responsible for ourselves, we all set our own benchmarks in life and it's up to us alone to set an example for ourselves and others.

[ DR ] Great advice Tony. What advice would you give to someone who feels they simply do not have the strength of character necessary to approach their goals with a determined mindset?

[ TC ] The best advice to give a negative person is positive advice. The positive can only help negativity. Negative does nothing for positive. I always say, "If you want to fly like an eagle, you can't hang around the chickens." You must surround yourself with positive people and a positive way of life. You must not give in to a negative mindset or negative thinking.

One negative thought will only grab more negative thoughts from the universe and the same goes for positive thoughts. The more positive thoughts you create, the more positive thoughts will arise. I found in life that there's no other way to move forward unless you take the first step yourself. You alone can unlock the key to your potential and all the wonderful things you hope for can become a reality just by simply believing.

[ DR ] On a related note, people often use the excuse of not having the motivation, desire or the "right" attitude to follow though with their goals. They therefore, on this basis, set themselves up for failure before they even begin. How would you encourage such people to break this negative thinking to realize their potential?

[ TC ] I get this question a lot and I feel that this all begins with positive thinking. Most people cannot see themselves getting in shape or achieving their goals in and out of the gym. In order for them to achieve what they want they have to change their mindset. You cannot achieve something if you feel deep down inside it's impossible. You must have 100% faith in yourself and that whatever you want will become possible one way or another.

In times of worry and defeat, you must hold your head up high and know there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that all of your efforts will be rewarded. It's like when you first plant seeds you don't see anything happen and on the outside it looks impossible, but in time and with positive nurturing the seeds will harvest.

[ DR ] Some people seem to have the ability to overcome incredible odds while others give up at the first obstacle. What separates these two groups of people?

[ TC ] Determination definitely. One person will look at the mountain and say, "Wow I could never climb that," while another person will look at the mountain and say, "I can't wait to climb that!"

For instance, my wife has been trying to get me to go on rides forever. I have one fear in life, and that's heights. I have not been able to overcome my fear of heights because I don't want to. I'm not determined to do so because I don't feel I need to and it's not that important to me. But in reality, it is important that I have a need to be in control all the time.

Therefore, roller coaster rides, horseback riding, or anything that I have no control over I don't like. I need to face my fear and do it so I can overcome this fear. You may also think that one fear is only one fear but in reality one fear has roots that branch into other fears. Just like determination in a way. Even though there are many different levels of fear, all levels become one.

[ DR ] How can someone who has suffered any significant setback (a serious injury, for example) find the determination to ultimately overcome this?

[ TC ] Well this is easy to answer. I'll give a perfect example. I have a friend I used to work out with at my gym. He's hearing-impaired and I have known him for more than 12 years. We used to always work out together and he was always committed and never missed a workout.

A few months ago he hurt his back. I really don't know how, but he said he pinched a nerve in his neck or something and was out of the gym for a week or so. When he came back to the gym, it was like looking at a different person. I don't know what happened to him. It was like all of a sudden his whole personality changed.

He worked out a little using light weights but had this attitude that "I'm getting old now, I should retire, my doctor said I shouldn't lift weights." This is coming from a guy who never, ever, even went to a doctor period. He was like a different person. He went from being such a motivated dedicated person to one I didn't recognize.

When he finished his workout I never saw him again. It's sad because I don't have any contact with him other than a neighbour of his who works out at my gym that tells me he's not coming back anymore. So what I'm trying to say is no matter what happens to you, no matter what mental or physical ailment you go through, if you truly are determined to come back you will come back. Do not give into a mentality of defeat. Nothing in life can beat a faithful, positive mindset. Only you can beat yourself.

[ DR ] In bodybuilding there are those who seem to do everything right as far as structuring their training and nutrition, but lack the determination needed to apply 100 percent intensity to their workouts, an attitude that can prove detrimental to progress. What are the initial steps a person can take to increase their training intensity? What should they hold in foremost in their mind when approaching their workouts?

[ TC ] I always say, "If you train like a champion you will become a champion." If you feel you lack motivation and that you're not making the right gains you're looking for, I would advise you go back to the basics. Remember when you first started working out and when you first started dieting you made incredible gains very quickly. You didn't do anything fancy and probably you just stuck to your game plan and everything worked itself out.

Well now things might have changed. Your body isn't doing the same it always did because of the simple fact it's not being challenged anymore. You can't have 20-inch arms if you're curling the same amount of weight year after year. If you want big gains you have to change your approach: that means your diet and training. Your way of thinking must change as well. Change brings change no matter what!

[ DR ] Could you provide an example from your life to illustrate how determination helped you to overcome a bodybuilding plateau?

[ TC ] I haven't had any plateau because I'm always on top of what I want to achieve. I'm not looking to get any bigger at this point in my career. I feel that I have gained all the mass I would like to have on my physique. I'm not into the big bulky look and at only 5-foot-10 and at 185 pounds I feel I'm big enough for what I do. Some would say is impossible but I know in my heart I can do it and because I know this, it will happen. I have always felt that bodybuilding was much more than building muscle. To me, it's more like building the perfect physique. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder we are all artists and our bodies are our masterpiece.

[ DR ] If a person's thinking is not at 100% they will be less likely to find the strength of mind to apply determination when it is needed most. What steps can be taken to ensure clear thinking and a positive mindset?

[ TC ] You must keep your eye on the prize. Nobody is going to give it to you so if you want it you got to take it. Like I said before, surround yourself with mental images of how you want to look and feel. Stay in a positive and happy mindset. Do not let others or negative thinking destroy your mindset like a virus. You have to keep your mind free of viruses. Almost like we have anti-virus protection for our computers we need to have an anti-virus protection mechanism in our minds.
