[ Q ] How did you find out about BodySpace? Have you met any BodySpacers in person yet?
dot

Oddly, I found out about BodySpace as a result of looking for domain names that were available for purchase. At that time, I envisioned owning and maintaining a personal training website.

I suspect that if enough people ever find themselves digging the odd and unusual, I might still pursue that pipedream.

While I have not met anyone in person from BodySpace, I do hope to someday fulfill number 7 on the to-do list, which may provide me that opportunity: Attend a Mr. Olympia weekend.

[ Q ] You started working out in 1986. Have you been consistently working out all these years without taking any substantial time off?
dot

For the most part it's been consistent. After my wife had our first son I pretty much stopped all together for about three years... Yeah, I still thought I was in shape and a stud though. And nope, looking back on it, I wasn't.

[ Q ] If I came to your home and looked in your refrigerator, what would I find?
dot

  • 6 pounds of grilled chicken breast (I grill the chicken for my weekly meals every Sunday).
  • 24 hardboiled eggs.
  • A huge bag of spinach (top ten super food).
  • A huge bag of broccoli spears.
  • Lots of Coke Zero (sad, but I'm addicted).
  • Tabasco sauce.
  • Jalapeno's (hot stuff addiction too).
  • Tons (literally, it's true) of sugar/fat free yogurt.
  • Skim milk.
  • Corn tortillas.
  • Other stuff that my kids eat.

[ Q ] Great blog post about putting things into perspective when daily life seems so hard. Do you find yourself using this thought process when you're having a difficult day?
dot

The inspiration for that blog came after reading about the astronaut doing work 300 miles above the earth on the Hubble telescope and for some reason, many of my challenges (yes, here on earth), seemed relatively minute.

And you know it's interesting, but it took me 40 years to realize that being happy and positive, really is a choice. I try to consistently be positive and look to enjoy every moment of each day (sounds corny I know, but it's true).

When I run into tough situations, I literally try to remain focused on making even those situations positive. At the end of the day, life really is too short to get caught up in trying to overanalyze negative situations that most of the time are out of our control anyway. Situations I cannot control do not get much of my time.

[ Q ] If anyone comes to you for advice and asks for a 'quick fix', what would you advise?
dot

Well, it depends on what they are looking to fix. If it has to do with overall fitness, I would tell them their quickest fix would be to find patience. If it's losing fat... diet, diet, diet. If it's looking to get into shape, it would be lifting weights, then diet.

I'm not sure people out there realize that progressive resistance with weights is, by far, the best thing anyone can do for their body on many different levels: anaerobic, aerobic, physical, mental, looks, endorphins, resting metabolism, etc.

[ Q ] What is the craziest fitness question you have ever been asked?
dot

If I thought that eating a diet chocked full of "Rocky Mountain Oysters" would help pack on the serious beef.

[ Q ] What did you want to be when you were 12 years old?
dot

A drummer in a rock band. I have played the drums since I was 10 years old and pretty much all the way into college; I thought I would be the next Neil Peart (Rush).

[ Q ] What advice would you give to your younger self if you could go back in time 20 years?
dot

Make straight A's in college (not C's and D's), don't party ( alcohol/drugs), stay focused, realize life doesn't center around girls (as much), look to make a difference by setting realistic goals, and remember the Alamo!

[ Q ] You obviously do what it takes to keep yourself in amazing shape, what do you think holds most people back from achieving their fitness goals?
dot

Well first off, the amazing shape part is highly debatable. However, I do have several answers for this question:

    • People try to make fitness into rocket science.
    • They try too hard to be in shape by tomorrow (no patience).
    • They fail to be consistent.
    • They listen and follow religiously to the trainer at their fancy gym who only knows what they read in a book and who has each of their clients on the same fitness path (no one fitness process works for all people, I'm sorry to report).
    • They do not understand that a fitness routine will only work if it is one that works for their lifestyle. Pick a routine that works for you first. Then if you really feel the fitness fire, go crazy and shake up everything. Don't start there.

[ Q ] What would it take to make this world a better place?
dot

If everyone remembered and subsequently dealt appropriately with the difference between right and wrong, rather than trying to reason the difference. Understand, make a decision, go forward, rinse, repeat...

[ Q ] What is your favorite movie of all time?

Fight Club. The savvy viewer understands that this movie is packed full of underlying messages, which correctly point out many of the root causes for the ills that plague our society.

[ Q ] How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?
dot

1,347,991... or is it 1,347,992? Dang it, I never can remember!

dot
[ Q ] What was the best trip you've ever taken and why?
dot

The tour my father-in-law took us on (He owns and operates the first tour company ever opened up in Arizona) to the Grand Canyon, the Little Colorado river, the Painted Desert, the Lava Tubes and the Res where he lived for a few years when he was in his experimental days.

Honestly, if you've never been to the Grand Canyon, you really owe it to yourself to do so. 'Surreal' is the only word for it. It literally looks like a painting and that surely, it cannot be real!

[ Q ] How would you handle it if Starbucks went into bankruptcy?
dot

This one's easy: I wouldn't have to handle it, because obviously, the day they go into bankruptcy is also the day the world ends!
