BodySpace member "SuperMaine" set a record for his appearance as the "Physique of the Month" this month. As a United States Navy SeaBee, Elijah Maine is stationed at the Naval Air Base Sigonella in Sicily, Italy and flew all the way to shoot with me in Palm Springs in Southern California. That sets a record for the longest distance traveled by a BodySpace member for his photo shoot, but when I first asked Elijah if he was interested, no question about it, he jumped at the chance.
Elijah is a man all about his goals. A year ago on BodySpace he was talking about one day being in a magazine, and he became so popular among all the members that his top 6 status sure made him noticeable. Born in Rochester NY, Elijah joined the Navy at 18 wanting to try something new and with the long term goal of being part of making the future safer for his kids. That goal was tested a few years later in an entirely different way than he expected.
Stationed at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport Mississippi, Elijah received his orders to deploy to Fallujah Iraq in 2005. But only days before leaving came Hurricane Katrina. Evacuated to New York with his new young family, he lost everything in the hurricane and floods, even his uniforms. But then he was turned around and sent back to be a part of the rescue and relief efforts. Elijah says he felt good being able to help but it was tough because he needed help too.
Ultimately Elijah did two tours in Iraq, and also found his Navy career taking him to Kuwait, Belize and Diego Garcia. Along the way he got into lifting weights in often makeshift gyms. It was all for what Elijah calls having control of two things that you really do own, your mind and body.
That took him to one day seeing an ad about BodySpace, the online community of BodyBuilding.com for like minded people looking for inspiration and motivation. Joining up and creating his profile he quickly found new ways for working out and new people to share experience and information.
Now on BodySpace, "SuperMaine" tries to talk with as many people as possible, finding them inspirational. And he is proud to often hear that now he is the inspiration for others. And that goes back to more of Elijah's goals. He wants to keep helping people and having an impact on their lives. He wants to be somebody that people can talk to and maybe even be more of someone who leads by example.
