[ Q ] When did you start becoming more serious about getting in such great shape?
dot

Since I stopped playing college basketball back in 1991, I have always been an active member of various gyms but concentrated mostly on cardio ( running, biking, elliptical).

I befriended a personal trainer in Spring 2007 and she motivated me to add weight training to my cardio. I saw results immediately and was hooked from then on.

[ Q ] What is your proudest accomplishment in fitness so far?
dot

I think I'm proudest of completing my 1/2 Ironman Triathlon last summer (July 2008).

But a very close second is the fact that during all of my training, I have only lost 7 pounds on the scale but gone from a size 32 jean to a 29. I'm happy with that.

[ Q ] How do you manage fitting in your workouts with such a busy life?
dot

While I was in triathlon season, I would get up and be at the gym at 3:30 am to train before my 12 hour work days. I look back and wonder how I did that. Still don't know how. But I just did it. Now I work nights, which is much different.

Sometimes I train before I go to work in the evening. Sometimes I train after work at 5 am and then go home to sleep. My son goes with me on the weekends and spends his 2 hours in the kids club while mommy gets strong. I don't really think about it much. It's not a chore. It never has been. Working out is as much a part of my life as brushing my teeth.

[ Q ] Are your co-workers in the health care industry supportive of your eating style when you are on the job?
dot

I would have to say yes, even though I work in private duty nursing and I'm on my own most of the time. Every now and then I pass the day shift nurse and we talk about fitness and eating correctly and I also discuss this with my client's wife. I have also made friends on BodySpace with fellow RNs who eat the same way, and we support each other.

dot
[ Q ] Are there any mistakes you made when you first started working out?
dot

Oh gosh yes. I fell victim to the cardio will help me burn calories-weights will make me look like a man-it doesn't matter what you eat if you're burning it off-way of thinking. I have since seen the light.

[ Q ] Are there times when you really don't feel like doing your workout? How do you handle it?
dot

Most definitely have those days! I try to really listen to my body. I try to identify if I'm starting to show signs of overtraining. Or maybe I've been training really hard for a few weeks and my "everything" hurts.

If that's the case, I will usually just take the day off and try my darndest to eat the best that I can that day. And sometimes I know I just want to take the easy way out and stay on the couch. When that happens, I remind myself it's a slippery slope between being a gym rat and a couch potato and usually get up and do something.

[ Q ] Has your fitness lifestyle affected your social lifestyle at all? What is your favorite drink when you go out?
dot

I wouldn't say that it has. I don't really go out much any way. When I do go out, I may have a beer or vodka drink.

dot
[ Q ] What is your training like for the Triathlon?
dot

CRAZY!! I spent about 4 months building up my cardio endurance to a minimum of 60 minutes at a moderate to high intensity. I also worked with a trainer to develop my sports conditioning during that time. I followed a 6 day/week, 20 week training plan. It was a 4 week cycle- build up hours/intensity for 3 weeks with a 1 week recovery.

At the peak (week 16) I would train 2-3 hours/day for 5 days and my long day would be 4-5 hours, doing any variation of swimming/biking/running. I tapered off weight training at about week 10. Off season training is MUCH different. More weight training/CrossFit and only about 45-90 minutes of my 3 sports.

[ Q ] Do you find that having a trainer is helping your push harder towards your goals?
dot

Most definitely. I like the no-brainer training aspect. Just show up and do what they tell you. I just have to lift the weights/pull the cable. I can do that. Besides, I'm a people person and I train better with a partner, and since I don't have one, I feel that having to pay for one isn't a bad thing.

dot
[ Q ] What is your favorite place that you have visited in your travels so far?
dot

As far as during my adult life, I would have to say Ohio. I know, not very exotic. But I just went to the Arnold and met fitnblnde4, crlgrl and nursnic there. They are my GIRLS and I would not even be close to where I am without each of them!
