[ Q ] You had a big struggle with an eating disorder. What was the turning point that changed the direction of your life?
dot

The turning point occurred over a number of months really, but simply landing in the hospital and doctors telling me that if I came a few days later then I may not have been here today.

I had lots of time to think when I was in the hospital so I started thinking about why I was doing everything and how my eating disorder affected the people that surrounded me. After realizing that I was wasting away my life I began my journey.

[ Q ] You are the world champion of competitive eating. What made you decide to give it a try at first?
dot

Hahaha, yeah apparently I am. It's definitely one of the most ironic stories out there that's for sure.

The story is quite amusing. After a night of drinking with some close buddies, we decided to kill our hangovers with some greasy breakfast from a local pub.

A few of us ordered a dish called the linebacker which consisted of 2 of every breakfast item you can think of (pancakes, French toast, normal toast, eggs, bacon, sausages, homefries etc).

After wolfing down the plate of food, my buddy Mike made a random bet and asked the waitress what the record was for the restaurant and it was 2 plates in an hour... I ate 4. The story took off from there.

[ Q ] Now that you are a superstar, do you get a lot of mail from people struggling with eating disorders who are looking to you for help?
dot

I received a lot of mail prior to my discovery of competitive eating with how I recovered. However, now I do a get a lot more volume from people with and without eating disorders simply stating that I am an inspiration to them and to keep up the amazing work. It's definitely a great feeling; I just wish I had the time to answer every email in detail.

My story has gotten a lot of attention in the past year and we got funding to film an entire documentary. This film will be awesome, a trailer is on the website.

[ Q ] What is the food you would prefer to eat competitively as far as ease of eating to win?
dot

Anything soft is great. When something becomes dry and hard then you end up chewing too much and choking can easily happen. The softer... the better. But really, I can do well with any food.

[ Q ] When you are eating very fast for the sake of being the one to eat the most, do you even taste the food?
dot

During a ten minute contest, the taste of the food is evident for the first 1 or 2 minutes. After that you focus on simply get the food down and beat the others. This is a sport regardless of what others think.

You are competing against others to win the game. Like in any other professional sport, the athlete may like the actual sport, but at the end of the day he is there for the pay check. Same goes with eating, we are not there for a romantic candlelight dinner.

[ Q ] How long do you need to recover before you can do another eating contest?
dot

In the summer I have a lot of back-to-back contests (one contest on a Friday and the next on the Saturday).

Those weekends are exhausting simply because the body needs to pass through so much food. So if I have to give a time frame, then I would say 24 hours, but I prefer just once a week.

[ Q ] What are some favorite songs you listen to while working out?
dot

Rock. Nothing else will work for me.

dot
[ Q ] Where and how do you train?
dot

Crossfit Mississauga. I recently started training using Crossfit tactics and it is honestly the best training I have ever done. I have never been in this great of shape, and have never been so strong.

Crossfit:
Crossfit is a core strength and conditioning program. The program was designed to elicit a broad adaptational response. Crossfit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical cometence in each of the ten recognized fitness domains.

They are cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy.

Everyone I tell about this gym or show videos too wants to train here (the gym has one rule. If you cheat on your workouts, you get kicked out). There are no machines here, only Olympic plates, chin-up bars, ropes, hanging rings, boxes and chalk.

If you have never heard or tried this type of training, I highly suggest you try it! Good websites to visit are www.crossfitmississauga.com or www.crossfit.com.

[ Q ] What advice would you give to someone just starting out who asks you how to get in great shape?
dot

The number one question I get asked is how the heck I stay in shape while eating all that food! My first answer is that I am a Zeus or another god. But the realistic answer is that my life is not a competitive eating contest.

If someone wants to get in great shape they need to give themselves a realistic time frame to do so. It does not happen overnight. Frequent meals are important, getting lots of whole foods rather than powders is important.

After analyzing what I had seen in the gym before starting out with my current gym, I realized that a lot of people come to the gym and socialize. You should be coming to the gym to work hard, and push yourself every time.

If you don't do that, and you just want to socialize, then you clearly don't have the right mind set to get in shape and you should just stay home.

[ Q ] Any particular supplements you like to use?
dot

I don't use too many supplements as I don't really feel I need them. I use protein powders when I need them, and when I do I always use the best d@mn flavored protein on the market, Xtreme Formulations.

If you haven't tried this protein then you should. You honestly feel like you are cheating every time you drink it because you never thought a protein powder could taste this good.

I also am a big fan of digestive enzymes. Since I sometimes take in enormous amounts of food, I don't want to worry that my stomach can't handle it, and taking these leaves me worry free.

[ Q ] When is your next competitive eating contest planned?
dot

Summer is the biggest time for contests, but I have another one planned near the end of October. They pop up everywhere all the time; I just have to find time for it in my busy schedule.

[ Q ] If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
dot

Asia and then South America. In fact when I finish grad school I'll be heading to Asia for 6 months and travel around.

I love traveling. It's definitely my favorite hobby and I want to travel the world before I die.

dot
[ Q ] What is your favorite holiday?
dot

Christmas for sure! I get to see all my friends and family, there is nothing more important to me than them. Plus I get to hit up the slopes for some skiing in between.
