HelenaWf has been a member of BodySpace since January, 2009. She is a mother of three and competes in figure competitions in Montana. She uses BodySpace on a regular basis to interact with other fitness minded people and she inspires many!

[ Q ] How old are you and where are you from?

I am 45. I am originally from Sacramento, California, but I now reside in Montana and have for the last 4.5 years.


[ Q ] How did you find out about BodySpace? Have you met any BodySpace members in person?

I found BodySpace while I was researching information on the internet about bodybuilding and figure preparation. I have met two BodySpace members so far in person both Montanans, not counting my husband who is also on BodySpace.


[ Q ] When did you get serious about getting in great shape?

January 2008.

[ Q ] You really have a lot going on with being a wife, mother of 3, and accountant along with keeping in top shape... how do you manage it all?

I am a professional juggler, lol! I have a very supportive husband who does a lot of the daily housework and childcare. He gets up really early so he can get his workouts in too. As an accountant I log in long hours from July to December, but I always go to the gym afterward regardless of the time. I pack my meals so I have everything I need to eat with me. This prevents making bad eating choices.


[ Q ] Your children must be very impressed with your level of fitness... do you encourage them to eat healthy and workout?

They are. I would like to see them eat a lot healthier, but that is not always easy. Since hubby does most of their cooking, it is mostly fast and convenient and usually not that healthy. I like it when the boys go hiking or snowshoeing with me. I have one son who really likes to eat like me and exercise with me. I wish the other two were more gung ho.

[ Q ] What is one food that you could never give up?

Dark Chocolate.

[ Q ] What was your favorite toy as a kid?

Breyer model horses.


[ Q ] What is the title of the last book you read?

Still working on it....Dead Heat by Dick and Felix Francis


[ Q ] How do you deal with resisting the daily temptations of tasty treats that could throw you off course with your fitness goals?

I remind myself of my goals. If I am not preparing for a contest and it is a treat I really like I will have a little. I don't believe any food should be off limits, but you have to decide whether it is worth it or not and control your portions.

[ Q ] What is the best advice you could give somebody who wants to get started with getting fit?

Start slowly. Take baby steps. I started by just walking on my breaks. Then, I started walking at lunch, and then before work and after. Two months later I added weight training, again slowly increasing the weight as I know ligaments and tendons take longer to adapt than muscle.

Also, you should track their food. I use a food tracker on sparkpeople.com. It is very important to realize what you are eating and how much you are eating before you can change those behaviors. Finally, forgive yourself often and focus on positive things you accomplish each day. If you fall off the wagon, get back on immediately. The sooner you do so the less damage caused.

[ Q ] What is your favorite supplement product?

[ Q ] When did you do your first contest? Do you have any coming up?

My first figure contest was September 26, 2009. My next two are March 27, 2010: Big Sky Figure and Montana State Figure. I will be competing in both my height and Masters Class in each.

People who text at the gym while using equipment or working out on the exercise floor. Please leave those phones in the locker room!

Costa Rica. I hear it is a very beautiful place.
