BodySpace Member Of The Month

March 2010: Meanjoe1

Joe has been a member of BodySpace since its beginning. Joe started weight lifting because he was tired of being too skinny for his height. Joe learned quickly that many gym goers are not there to workout at all. This led Joe to create a gym at home and he's been training there ever since. Fitness became his passion and he even decided to become a personal trainer so he could help others.

[ Q ] Where are you from, and how long have you been working out?

I'm from New Jersey, about a block away from the beach in central NJ. I've been working out now for 5 years, but didn't get serious with it until about 2 or so years ago.

[ Q ] How long have you been visiting Bodybuilding.com and using BodySpace?

I've been visiting Bodybuilding.com since I started getting serious about training and a member since January of 2006. BodySpace? I signed up for it shortly after it's debut.

[ Q ] When did you start lifting, and where? Have you always been lifting at home?

I started lifting about 5 years ago at a local gym with some of my friends, however we were your "typical" gym goers and weren't very serious with it at all.

When I decided to get serious about it I was training alone, my friends had given up. It wasn't until after that I realized that most people are at the gym to socialize, not to train. I was tired of waiting for machines and my progress suffered from it. So 2 years ago or so I decided to create my home gym and have been working out there ever since.

[ Q ] When looking at your weight chart on your BodySpace profile, you can see that you have been making some steady weight gain progress. What about that huge increase since September the 25th?

When I initially became serious with my training I was at 145lbs or so, exceptionally small for someone who is 6'1". Over the summer I hit a plateau and struggled for quite some time to break it, but didn't have any luck, lost my motivation in the process and basically kept on training but without the intensity I started with.

After attending the Olympia I had a renewed motivation and a very big drive to break the plateau. When I returned from the Olympia I had redesigned my routine and diet finally broke my plateau.

[ Q ] You mention your main goal is any other than listed, what is it exactly?

As of right now, my goals are simple - to keep my motivation and improve my physique each day. I haven't given much thought to competing myself but because of my passion for fitness I have become a certified personal trainer to help others achieve their goals.

[ Q ] You strive to get more knowledgeable about weightlifting and nutrition everyday. Which resources help you doing this?

I've gained a lot of knowledge from Bodybuilding.com over the time I've been on it, but there are so many other ways to gain helpful knowledge as well. Trial and error with oneself works as well as giving you more knowledge about what works for you, but I also can attribute a lot of it to talking with other like-minded individuals. BodySpace has helped by putting me in touch with a lot of those people; some have become good friends with me.

[ Q ] One of your hobbies is mountain climbing. Do you do this in particular to improve your grip?

I do it mainly as a hobby, because of my location I don't get to do it as much as I like. Grip strength right now comes mainly from training, however I am hoping to move in the not too distant future where I look forward to being able to do more mountain climbing and various other outdoor activities.

[ Q ] When looking at your pictures, you can tell that you've visited the '07 Mr. Olympia. How did you like that? Did you meet most of the pros?

It's true I was at the 2007 Olympia and it was my first one. I was so excited about the whole experience I forget that the pro's are regular people too. I met so many of the people I look up to; they were down to earth and exceptionally nice. The whole experience was overwhelming... definitely motivational and inspirational.

[ Q ] Any final comments or anything else you want to tell other people on BodySpace and Bodybuilding.com?

I would like to let other people know that as long as they believe they can achieve their goals and dreams then nothing can stop them from doing so.
