[ Q ] Where are you from and how old are you?
I'm 32 and I am from San Francisco. My birthday is the day before my first figure competition!

My First Figure Competition!
[ Q ] When did you decide to get into such great shape?
November 2005. I was first intrigued by compliments at a heavy 210 pounds at a Halloween event when I reunited with friends from childhood.
Then I made a pact with one of my best friends when we realized if we took no action we could be at the same position or heavier a year later - so I took it full speed.
I ended up addicted to exercise when I discovered that whatever I was doing was working! So I just kept learning more about nutrition and exercise via several types of trainers.

Jen Hendershott's Phatcamp are a huge influence on my drive. After my first camp in March 2007, I made a goal and commitment to myself to train for a figure competition in 2009. And here I am, rushing to make it happen!
[ Q ] How did you discover BodySpace?
I discovered BodySpace from doing an internet search on transformations to get inspired. Sure enough, plenty of Bodybuilding.com "Transformations of the Week" results popped up.
I was inspired by the transformation of Josie St. Amour - BodySpace member 'Seosaid'. Her story is what led me to my figure competition goal!

[ Q ] What do you do for a living?

[ Q ] How do you balance workouts, job, and family life?
Plan ahead! There's nothing like having the support of those in the household. My husband and child are a huge support to my goal.
They sacrifice a lot of time without me and I know that can be emotionally tough on everyone. Without a schedule, fully stocked kitchen, and clean laundry, keeping things rolling would be impossible.
Right now I have informed my friends of my commitment for the upcoming months and have to stay focused on taking care of my careers, fitness plan, and immediate family time.

Any block of time that becomes available I make it eventful to spend with my husband and child. BodySpace became my social fix as well as a way to stay motivated.
[ Q ] What are the biggest mistakes you made when you started out to get in shape?
Any attempt towards a healthier you is not a mistake. There are several things I was doing wrong in the beginning of my journey that I was ignorant to.
Drinking alcohol has a bad effect on the body. It hinders progress and I was partying several times a month. Also, not enough stretching - when I started lifting I didn't know how to stretch or even that I needed to do it regularly.

Not stretching enough caused a couple of injuries that I am still trying to overcome years later. Stretching before and after a cardio session always keeps my muscles looser. And cardio after weight training helps me with the lactic acid buildup.
[ Q ] How did you get involved in running a 5K?
Another BodySpace member inspired me! Farleybasset seems like a straight bodybuilder. I was surprised to learn that he ran everyday consistently, and eventually ran a 10K. I was never a fan of running.
Today I say we have love/hate relationship - running and me - but it was a big contribution to my fat loss.

I wanted to challenge myself mentally with it - a way to bring my fitness strength to the next level. I've also learned core training and kettlebell fitness in addition to the traditional weight-training first learned.
[ Q ] You are currently training for a competition, how is it going so far and when will the competition be held?
Training for a competition is all mental. Doing the workouts comes easy so long as you plan, plan, plan. But to have the mental strength to push yourself during your workout time at every minute, to resists so many temptations of regular food and overcome any bad eating habits, and to learn to have to choose to stay away from many social events due to time/focus can be huge challenges.
I am eight weeks out and probably have about 15 more pounds of body fat to lose so I'm very nervous, but at this point all I can do is stick to the plan and keep progressing.

BodyByO is my trainer and I have all my trust that Kim is guiding me to my goal. It's just up to me to stay on track. The competition is October 10th - I designed my suit to represent the Highway to Hottie Project and am getting posing lessons from the lovely Janelle Haney!
[ Q ] Did you find that the support from having BodySpace friends with similar goals made a difference in helping you reach your goals?
There are days when I just can't find the energy to keep going, but logging into BodySpace everyday gives me a piece of fuel to keep my furnace burning!
There are several BodySpace members that I have tagged as Inspirational like Mike7900 who keeps on pushing despite his overfilled schedule yet still manages to push me along too.
I have made real life friends through BodySpace and have gotten real life friends to join, including husband & BodySpace member Purecaine and fellow competitor Gypsie77.

It has connected me to many of my fitness interests by following friends all over the world that compete, race, dance, and transform! What is more amazing than to be affected by someone you've never met?!
[ Q ] If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Do I have to pick just one place? I have always wanted to explore the history and foundation of Italian, Greek, Spanish, and Egyptian culture!
They all have sanctioned architecture and artwork that goes so far back in history. These countries have so many stories to tell through their cultures: landmarks, art, clothes, artifacts, etc.

I'm so curious to learn how different people lived at different times and different parts of the world. I'd also love to experience how they live in today's era. My appreciation for U.S. diversity would only be greater.
