Why I Decided To Transform

I have always been somewhat the 'life of the party." One day I was on Facebook and saw some pictures posted from the weekend festivities and there it was - the HORROR (before pic)! This was the picture that made me change my life. I finally saw what I had become and did not like it.

I am a very vivacious girl from Houston, Texas! I love my life and everyone in it. I love to laugh, am easily entertained, and tend to be who I am simply for my own amusement and entertainment.

I'm the best single mother, aunt, daughter, sister, and friend! I have always been blessed and able to eat and drink anything in sight until my 35th birthday. Then I began to see changes - UGH! After a bad breakup, I let myself go, lost my job, my house, my dogs, and I started drinking a lot.

For a second job, I worked as a Bud Girl, which often put me out in bars. I still managed to be the best mom, but was not happy with myself.

I got to where I was drinking a bottle of wine by myself every day and I was on the lake every other weekend when I didn't have my son...drinking!

Notice in my before photo that I'm by a keg! I just wasn't happy with myself and obviously I didn't care!

Things started turning around when I became the legal guardian for my niece. She was a teenager and gave me a wakeup call. I was not living right and she didn't like the drinking and partying at all. Even though I was hiding it from my son, she saw. What kind of a role model was that for a young lady who I was responsible for?

She began by insisting on healthier eating, running, and tennis. I had to change a lot of things, so I went back to school, changed careers, and began doing makeup and facials as a licensed aesthetician. I landed a gig as the official makeup artist for REAL (Real Entertainment Athletes Leaders). I started tanning and doing makeup and hair for other fitness competitions and met some truly inspiring people.

My client, pro figure competitor/fitness model and weekly columnist for Fitness RX Magazine, Allison Frahn, was the first to inspire me to compete and made me believe I could do it! That's where it all started! Thank you, Allison!

I decided to change my lifestyle. Not everyone understood and there is a lot who still do not fully understand. I did have to purge my friends and weed out any and all who would lead me astray no matter how long I had been friends with them.

That was one of the hardest things I had to do. As much as I loved them, I love myself and my kids more.

My family and close friends were supportive through the first competition, then they were like, "Ok, it's over. Back to the old Lisa!" NO! This was an initial shocker for them and they understandably doubted my ability to commit and conquer my demon love for alcohol, every VIP list in town, and laziness. I knew I had to earn their respect and I am ok with that. I do this all for me, but I do need the support an encouragement from my loved ones.

I also started volunteering at my church, Fellowship Of The Woodlands, as a Sunday school teacher. This was my way of reaching out to my church. I really grasped the fact that I really had just lost faith, and in turn, lost my way in life. I am very strong in my faith now and believe "Faith is the core of any and all strength."

I am so blessed with so much support from others in the industry and have found a new home; it is where my heart is now. I am by far the happiest I have ever been in life with myself!

How I Accomplished My Goals

I suffer from food allergies and asthma, so my journey was not an easy one. When I first started, I hired one of my clients, Keridon Davis McMahon, of Living Patterns to be my trainer and nutritionist. She would come to my home once or twice a week. In the beginning it was so tough!

She was very patient as I always had to take longer breaks due to the asthma. She took me to the grocery store and hands on showed me how to shop healthy and read labels.

I worked with her for about four months. In that time, I went from a size 10 to a 5/6! In April of 2011, I entered my very first fitness competition, REAL Deep South. I did not place, but I DID get up there and that was my goal.

I joined 24-Hour Fitness and started training with friends and trying to do it on my own.

Four months later, I entered my second show, The Optimum Nutrition REAL Lone Star. I entered two categories, Fitness Model and Bikini, and double silvered! Second place in both categories!

This was a super big win because I did endure some major obstacles while in training. So major, I almost did just throw in the towel.

One month before my show, one of my best friends passed away. I literally shut down and went way off track. With major support from the athletes I met at REAL in April and my close friends and family, I was able to get back up and continue. She would have wanted that.

Then my family vacation got changed. Guess who went on vacation two weeks before a show! Yeah, I did! And lastly, I broke up with my ex-boyfriend the week of the show. So you see the importance of this win. I survived where a lot of people might have given up. I take pride in that!

I plan on competing in November of 2012. I hired Optimum Nutrition Sponsored Athlete, Jason Powell, as my Nutritionist. Jason knew he had his hands full with all my dietary needs. Then I went and broke my ankle in March on St. Patrick's Day (I was sober). Some luck, huh!? I was in a hard cast for three weeks and a lace-up cast for four weeks.

This obstacle has set my training back, but I did not stop training at all! I was restricted to seated lifting and Jason wrote me a new plan while I was in the cast.

The after pictures that Leon Fern took were when I was in a neon pink cast! I even made my cast shoe sporty and made a Nike symbol with bling. Once again, I overcame where some may have quit. I never knew I had it in me!

I know it could always be worse and I'm thankful for everything and every day God gives me on this earth. I have endless goals. I know I have a long way to go, but I have come such a long way. I look to my fellow competitors for inspiration. It's all around us!

Diet Plan That Guided My Transformation

Here is an example of what my diet is like. I do switch it up, but this is a basic day. I try and drink a gallon of water and even started using MiO flavors. It helps a lot and tastes like Kool-Aid!

Training Regimen That Kept Me On Track

I loved Jamie Eason's Live Fit Program. My favorite was Week 3. This is what I followed and still do on a regular week, but I do switch it up and adjust to my needs.

Days 6 and 7: Rest

What Aspect Challenged Me The Most

The dieting is the hardest part for me. To switch from eating so bad to eating six healthy meals a day is still a challenge.

Having kids' schedules to work around and keeping their delicious treats and goodies in the house makes it harder.

I do enjoy prepping my meals when I can, but I will be honest, it doesn't happen every week as it should and does closer to competition. I'm working harder to be more discipline on my diet.

The issue for me isn't eating clean, it is eating so much! I keep telling myself the more I eat the bigger my muscles will grow!

I love that there are places like My Fit Foods. If I can't make it at home on time, or don't feel like cooking, I will drop in there and get the perfect meal.

I'm getting brave and trying out new recipes from all sorts of magazines and web sites. I have even had slumber parties where my girlfriends and I will sleep over, workout together, and then make a healthy meal together. It is so much fun!

My Future Fitness Plans

My next show, NPC Texas State Natural Championships in Austin, Texas, actually falls on my 40th birthday, November 3rd. I will be competing in Bikini Open and Masters.

I have formed a Journey Page on Facebook and have gained quite the following. I love sharing my story and my obstacles along with anything else fitness. I absolutely love this lifestyle and may consider getting licensed as a trainer.

My goal is to compete, go pro, move up to figure one day, get published in Oxygen Magazine or Fitness Rx, and, drum roll please, I just got signed as an official sponsored athlete for Metabolic Nutrition!

I am so excited and honored to be a part of the Metabolic Nutrition team. Keep an eye out for me either with my company Miqolette Aesthetics & Makeup Artistry or Metabolic Nutrition. You WILL see more of me!

Suggestions For Aspiring Transformers

  • Hire a credible and licensed trainer to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly and have correct form to prevent injury.
  • Hire a credible and licensed nutritionist to ensure you're dieting to your needs and desired goals.
  • Making change is never easy, so get a support group. Surround yourself with likeminded people, and more important, those who remain POSITIVE!
  • Life happens. Just get back on track as soon as possible and stick with it!
  • Set a goal. You don't have to compete, but maybe you have a trip or a wedding coming up to give yourself a deadline to work toward.
  • Print a picture of your goal physique and tape it to your fridge, pantry, and bathroom mirror.
  • Keep track! Make a "Fitness Bible" where you keep your measurements and pictures through your transformation; tear sheets from magazines of workouts and recipes.
  • Download a mobile application such as My Fitness Pal to help keep a diary of your diet and caloric intake.
  • Educate yourself on everything you're doing from workouts to supplements.
  • Join BodySpace!!!

How Bodybuilding.com Helped Me Reach My Goals

I couldn't really afford a trainer anymore, so I actually turned to Bodybuilding.com for help. No Kidding! I found the build your own workout, diet, and nutritional plan and that is exactly what I did.

I tried the Jaime Eason LiveFit Program as a short-term goal to keep me on track for my show in November. I absolutely LOVE Bodybuilding.com! It truly is a one-stop shop. I do a lot of my research on just about every issue, especially for supplement information.

I often post, share stories, and links off the site. I refer EVERYONE to this site! If you go look at my page on Facebook, in the notes of how I got started you'll see I truly do encourage everyone who stops by to check out Bodybuilding.com.

My favorite thing is the videos of how to correctly do the exercises. I have the APP too! I'm now trying Felicia Romero's plan, and I love it so far! I also love the free swag you get with your orders.
