The 2001 MAXMUSCLE IRONWORKS GYM 1st Annual "BEST IN THE WEST" Bench Press and Deadlift Championships. A WABDL World Championship Qualifier.
By James Preston (Owner Ironworks Gym)

September 1st, 2001 was a day of making and breaking new State and World records here at IRONWORKS GYM in Nampa Idaho. This was my first meet ever to put on, or even watch for that matter. The closest thing I ever saw for powerlifting was the Olympics. Boy, did I have a rude awakening. I started off by talking to one of my gym members, Johnny Hernandez (2000 198 lb class WABDL World Champion in the BP & DL) about putting on a local little bench press competition. Next thing I know, a world qualifier for the WABDL was canceled in Utah and I am getting a call from Gus Rethwisch (The head of the WABDL for North America) asking me if I would like to make my meet a qualifier. After a few questions I said, "What the hell, let's do it." So I started down the road getting sponsors, radio commercials, press releases, etc…Needless to say it was a learning experience.

Everyone that helped out with the event stepped up to the plate and slammed a home run. My scorekeepers Bunny Gilbert and Kamil Walker were absolutely terrific: this was their first time at scorekeeping and pulled it off without a hitch. My spotters Scott P., Tony G., Tony P., Kenny S., Tom L., Jesus R., Dave V., were GREAT! Ivan Pereda my video man did an awesome job. And now for a shameless plug…our M.C. James Preston (that's me) rocked the house with the intensity of a professional wrestler screaming, "Liiiiiiiiiiift is gooooood!" Thanks to everyone again that helped make this a truly exciting great event. We look forward to next years 2nd Annual "Best in the West" Bench press and Deadlift Championships. I heard so many guys talking around the Boise area how much they could lift and then when it came down they didn't even show. That is why we might change the name to, "The Put Up or Shut Up" or maybe "The Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" Bench press and Deadlift championships. So guys and gals if you can't walk the walk, don't be yapping and talking the talk.

The event kicked off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday 9-1-2001 with the first flight of bench pressers we started off by breaking and setting a new Utah State Record. Then we continued the rest of the meet shattering Idaho State Records, Utah State Records, and a Montana State Record. If that wasn't enough for a first meet, by the time the 2nd Flight of Deadlifters were finished, we saw 2 WORLD RECORDS buried in the cemetery of World Records! I couldn't help but think, "Damn, this is unbelievable, my first meet and World Records are being broken. Does it get any better than this?!" Well it did after everything was said and done we had broken 2 World Records, 17 Idaho State Records, 1 Montana State Record and numerous new Utah State Records were set. I personally would like to thank the lifters that came to compete, especially those that had to travel, you guys (and gal) were AWESOME! We look forward to seeing you all next year.

I would like to thank our sponsors, they were great: Dave Valdez at "Max Muscle" Boise, Idaho; Cyndi Ogle at "Bodybuilding.com" Boise, Idaho; John Inzer of "Inzer Advanced Designs" Longview Texas; Moses Kinikini of "CellNet of Idaho" Nampa, Idaho; Shilo Inn of Nampa, Idaho; Eli Martiniez of "Culligan Water" Boise, Idaho; Danny at "AAA Auto Sales" The Big Red Barn in Nampa, Idaho; and last but not least Gayle, Sean & J.R. From 99.1 FM The Point Radio Station, they were awesome!
