Alpin Haus started over 40 years ago as a Ski Shop. The progression lead to R.V.'s, Pools, Snowmobiles, and Boat retailing. We now have four locations - 2 in Amsterdam NY, Clifton Park NY and Wilton NY.
[ Q ] How did the gym start and why did you decide to begin (or work within) the gym business.
The gym is located in the Alpin Haus Plaza and prior had been a tenant of Alpin Haus. Alpin Haus had the opportunity to purchase the gym in 2008 and did so with great enthusiam. Andy Heck, President of the Alpin Haus Corporation, is a marathon and triathlon athlete with a passion for health and fitness. Although this was a different direction for the Alpin Haus Corp. (Primarily a R.V., Marine, Power Sports, Ski Shop, Pool & Spa retailer) it continues to be a very positive venture.

[ Q ] Can you give us a description on what went into opening your awesome establishment?
The first thing we did was to schedule a clean up day. Many of us had been members of the gym previously and had seen it's cleanliness go to wayside. We closed the facility at 2:00 p.m. on a Wednesday and worked until after midnight. The Alpin Haus team worked in crews to paint, clean, re-grout... you name it we did it. We had 5 teams of 5 going non-stop. Thursday morning the facility looked like a different place all together.
[ Q ] What makes your gym different?
We have activities/contest
scheduled all the time. We try to keep everyone
motivated through group involvement and competition.
This past year we had two racquetball tournaments, two bench press contests, two kids fitness weeks, 6 nutritional seminars, a Biggest Loser contest and in July we held our first leg press contest. Some of our future plans include a 5k race, bodybuilding and figure contest, member of the month, cardio king/queen, and most motivated member award. It is through these types of activities that our members get to know one another and work side by side toward their common goals.
[ Q ] What sort of people do you attract into your gym?
Our clientale is very diverse. However, we have worked hard to increase our younger members. We offer a reduced cost ($125yr) Jr. membership for
high school and college students. By getting young people into the gym at an early age, it often eliminates the intimidation factor, felt by so many in their later years.
We also have a large number of local professionals daily. Alpin Haus has been involved in the local business community for over 40 years and was a natural progression to offer corporate rates.
[ Q ] What inspires people to train at your facility?
Our members inspire each other. The competitions we hold often inspire members to work harder. Besides that, we pride ourselves on cleanliness. I guess that helps when our facility is compared to others in the area. It's also a very friendly atmosphere with a homey feel.
[ Q ] Do you have any top trainers and why are they so good?

[ Q ] What was the hardest part about operating your gym?
Overcoming the negative thinking toward past management. Along with that, corresponding to the members that change can be good.
When we replaced all the light bulbs; our members hated it. They were so use to the dark that they forgot what it was supposed to look like. In time they adjusted and so did we.

[ Q ] What makes you competitive over the large gym chains?
The ability we have to quickly adjust to our members' needs. Changing one of the T.V. stations, turning on or off fans, creating programs based on member need, listening and reacting to member suggestions, brewing more coffee on demand, and even making that
protein shake just the way they like it.
[ Q ] How have you been able to remain so successful and how do you hope to remain so?
By sticking to our mission statement: "Everyone is family in our Haus". At Alpin Haus this has been the creed that we all live and work by. It makes what some call work, fun! Day after day the gym's employee's are excited to be here. Usually arriving at least an hour ahead of there scheduled time. By loving what we do and having the Alpin Haus Team behind us, the sky is the limit.
