Fitness Preview

Three's A Crowd

2004 Fitness International and Fitness Olympia Champion, Adela Garcia-Friedmansky will be back to defend her title. Be prepared to see an improved Adela and an exciting routine from this fitness champion.

Ever-present challenger Jenny Hendershott will be there to make her usual mark, and she has been consistently rising to the top over the last few years. Incredible physique improvements and jaw-dropping routines make Jen a top contender for the title.

Kelly Ryan, who some have named the "Uncrowned Fitness Olympia," will be ready to dethrone Adela and reclaim a title that she won in 2000. Expect her to bring the usual high-flying moves, precision performance, and awesome choreography in an all-new routine that'll be sure to wow everyone at the show.

Fresh Faces

Not discounting any of the other amazing athletes in the line-up, anything can happen in this exciting and ever-changing sport! Making their Fitness International debuts will be rising stars Mindi O'Brien, Debbie Czempinski, and Kirsten Nicewarner.

Mindi is coming off an incredible first year, winning her first pro show in 2004 - the Southwest Pro Cup - and going on to finish 11th at her first Fitness Olympia.

Debbie continues to make her presence known on the IFBB circuit with her incredible routines, and only needs to improve upon her physique placings to do some damage and finish near the top of the line-up.

Kirsten made her mark at the Southwest Pro by finishing 8th overall, and will continue to rise to the top with her incredible work ethic.

Movin' On Up

Many fans and judges believe that in this sport, consistency is key. Always consistent with skilled and entertaining routines and well-developed physiques are Stacy Hylton, Tanji Johnson, Julie Palmer, Kim Klein, Tracey Greenwood and Carla Sanchez.

Stacy always brings attitude and polished gymnastics and strength moves to her entertaining routines. Despite some personal setbacks in the end of 2004, she persevered and made another great showing at the Olympia. Expect her to be ready to do even better at this show.

Tanji also never fails to please the fans with her funky dance, attitude, and unique routines. Be sure she'll bring that same energy to the Arnold, as well as a pleasing package to the physique rounds.

Julie and Kim have been consistently placing in the top 5 of almost every show they enter. Kim just placed 2nd at the Southwest Pro, while Julie won the NY Pro in 2004. They both bring very nicely balanced physiques, and Julie keeps improving her routines, while Kim consistently brings strong strength and gymnastics skills.

Tracey has also been hard at work, and continues to do well in the pro fitness circuit. She plans to bring an all-new routine to the stage as part of her prep, and is set to nail her routines and conditioning.

Finally, don't discount Carla from this incredible line-up. Her routines have marked her as one of the best "routine girls" in the industry, and she only needs to bring her physique up in the eyes of the judges to earn great scores and finish well.

"I'll Be Back!"

Once a strong fitness competitor on the international and Olympia stages, Aleksandra Kobielak made the switch to the figure division in 2004. While she enjoyed some success in her placings, she also suffered some disappointments. She'll be returning to the Fitness stage for 2005, starting with this very show.

Aleksandra is known for her foreign flair - both obvious in her fitness routine themes and with her exotic beauty in the physique rounds.

Competitor Previews

Many of these pro's were kind enough to respond and to provide some photos below. I'd like to thank all of the ladies who responded. You are all great and inspiring role models - it was so fun doing this article!

Debbie Czempinski

Competitor:

    Debbie Czempinski

Have you competed at the Arnold before?

    No, never.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was over the moon. I received a call from Mike Davies on Sunday morning (5.30 am our time) saying welcome to the Arnold, I soon woke up. I don't think it hit me for a couple of days though.

How long have you been preparing for this event?

    About 14 weeks.

What are your personal goals for this show?

As long as I know within myself that I have competed in my best condition possible, and that I nail both my routines.

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

A smaller, more streamlined physique and 2 new routines, that hopefully the fans will enjoy.

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I am not on any of the Expo booths during the Arnold (I am available if anybody is interested in having me on their booths). But I will be at the Expo and watching some of the other competitions. So if anybody does recognize me when I am at the expo, I would be more than happy to have a chat.

Please post any additional comments here:

I would just like to say a huge thank you to all the people who supported me and felt I deserved to be a part of the Arnold Classic.

Julie Palmer

Have you competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

Yes, two times. (2001 and 2004)

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was very excited the first year that I was invited because I had just received my pro card. I am always honored to be invited and represent Columbus Ohio.

How long have you been preparing for this event?

I started to diet after Christmas this past year but preparing for shows is a year long preparation, especially in fitness because you can always be working on skills, gymnastics, dance and routines. I have been taking gymnastics and dance classes to help with my new routine for this coming year

What are your personal goals for this show?

To step on stage and be confident and know that I did everything that I could do to present the best package. Also, to know that I gave 110% in preparation.

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

To hopefully see a different style of routine. I have been working with Stacy Hylton to help me with my routine this time around and I think it is definitely different than what I have done in the past.

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I will be in GNC booth.

Please post any additional comments here:

I want to thank my trainer and significant other, Mike Davies, and his two boys Daryian and Trent for always being so supportive of me and for giving me their love. Also thank you to GNC and to all the World Gym Members for their support.

Kelly Ryan

Competitor:

    Kelly Ryan

Have you competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

Yes, I have been competing in the Fitness International since the year 2000. I had to sit out of the 2002 show because of severe back problems that I could not rehab quick enough before the show.

    Fitness International Placings

    • 2000- Champion
    • 2001- 2nd place
    • 2002- injured
    • 2003- 3rd place
    • 2004- 2nd place

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was absolutely thrilled and honored when I received my first invite. I turned professional in 1998 and did not get the invite my first year as a pro, so when the invite was extended to me the following year, I thought to myself "I have now arrived on the professional fitness circuit."

How long have you been preparing for this event?

My contest preparation usually begins eight-to ten weeks out from the date of the show. Fitness competitors do not need to diet as hard as a bodybuilder nor should they eat and deplete their water tables like one, so eight weeks allows me enough time to fully prepare myself. I have been competing now for ten years so my body is at the point where any time I clean up my diet and add in more cardio, it will change pretty quickly. I train year round in the gym and on my routine skills which also enables me to prepare for a competition in less than the typical twelve weeks.

What are your personal goals for this show?

My personal goals for this show are to make some subtle changes to my physique from the way I looked at the Fitness Olympia in October, and to win the overall title. I feel that if you aim low, you will never get better as a competitor. I compete to win and really enjoy the process and journey along the way. Competing has brought so many wonderful people and opportunities into my life and I am very thankful for that alone. Winning a title just takes that feeling of satisfaction to the next level.

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

The fans can expect a brand new routine that is completely different as far as the theme goes, but still the same ole' Kelly "Flyin" Ryan style. What motivates me to out perform myself each time I step on stage are the fans! They make me who I am today. I look forward to seeing everyone in Ohio, and want to thank the fans that spend their hard earned money to show their support of us each and every year.

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

One of my favorite parts of competing is the time I get to spend talking with people (fans) at the booth in the expo. I will be signing photos and answering questions at the Pinnacle/Cytodyne booth and really hope that everyone will come by. Other than my booth time-(sat-sun) I will be on stage doing my best and having a ball!

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

A new theme for my 2 minute and beautiful suits!

Have you competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

Yes,this will be my sixth year competing at this event.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was thrilled, since I won the show last year and was looking forward to be on that stage again. Everyone at the show is great to us [the competitors].

I started training about 5 weeks ago. After the Fitness Olympia I took a bit of time off and then was back to the training again.

Have you ever competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

I have attended the Arnold, working booths and as a spectator. My dream has always been to have the chance to compete at the Arnold Classic. Little did I know my first Arnold Classic would be my third IFBB Pro Fitness Competition.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I didn't realize that I had been selected to compete at the Arnold until someone emailed me and congratulated me on making the selection. I was in disbelief!! As soon as I found out, I called everyone I knew! We (Dennis and I) sat down that evening and put a new training plan together.

How long have you been preparing for this event?

Technically, I have been preparing for this event my entire life! Really!!

I plan on coming into this event in the best shape of my life.

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I have a few options to choose from, but nothing has been solidified as of yet. I may take the weekend and just enjoy the expo and all of the other events as a spectator. You can check out my website to see where I will be!! www.mindiobrien.com

Have you competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

This will be my 6th Arnold Classic and I wanna win this one.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was again honored like I have been in the past because it is my home town and I love competing in front of family and friends. This is a beautiful thing, and it allows me to show my improvements and display my talent.

How long have you been preparing for this event?

Well, I rolled right out of 2nd place in late October from the Olympia, and I guess you could say I was on such a high that I started preparing for this year's event immediately.

I am realistic. I know I can win this in 2005 and I know I have earned the rights to. I plan on being nothing but my best. I will be happy with top 3 but winning is my ultimate goal.

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

Oh the same as other shows, "The unpredictable". I will represent Columbus like I always do!

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I will be working and signing photos on Saturday and on Sunday I will hosting the 2005 Fashion Show on the main expo stage at 12:30pm. I hope everyone will come by and get a photo with me and share a hug. My fans are what mold Jen into "Jen Hendershott."

Stacy Hylton

Competitor:

    Stacy Hylton

Have you competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

Yes, this will be my third year.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was very happy. I did not get invited my first year as a pro after winning my class at Nationals, so I didn't know if I ever would get chosen. It was a great accomplishment, and I felt honored to be on the list.

How long have you been preparing for this event?

Honestly, my whole life with all my athletics from the age of 4, but for this show since Jan. 2nd. I always like to take the holidays off to recharge my batteries, especially this year with the death of my father in Nov. 2004.

What are your personal goals for this show?

I want to improve on my placing from last year. I want to bring a better overall package. I want everyone to say "Wow, that was a great routine," when I am done with my two-minute performance.

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

They can expect the same as usual. I will bring a tight, conditioned physique with good proportions, and a fun, upbeat creative routine to killer music.

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I will be at the GNC booth this year for the first time.

Please post any additional comments here:

I look forward to the Arnold every year. This year will be very hard for me -- my first show without my dad. It has really been tough to prepare, of course, because I am still mourning my loss, but I feel I will be stronger for it. I look forward to the show and hope to meet some new people.

Competitor:

No, I have never competed in the Arnold Classic.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I will be at the GNC booth signing autographs and promoting their Pro-Performance products Saturday and Sunday.

Please post any additional comments here:

I have only been competing in Fitness for three years. In June 2001, I tore both my Achilles tendons which had to be surgically repaired. I was in a wheelchair for 5 months and was told I may never run again. My goal was to do one Fitness show - to say I did it and to have a positive goal to focus on during my long and painful rehab.

Having said that, I always dreamed of competing in the Arnold, so this is really a dream come true for me! My son, who will turn 8 that weekend, will be in the audience cheering for me. That makes this competition truly special and one I am really looking forward to.

Competitor:

    Kim Klein

Have you competed at the Arnold before? If so, how many times?

Yes, Last year (2004) was my first time.

How did you react when you received your invitation to compete?

I was so excited!!! I mean, ecstatic!!! I could not believe it - I, Kim Klein, was invited to the Arnold Fitness International. There were lots and lots of applicants, and they chose me. I felt so honored to have this opportunity. This was how I felt when I received my first invite, so when I received my second one it felt like deja-vu all over again. When I saw my name on the list, my whole body was tingling. I cannot wait to compete in the Arnold again!!!

How long have you been preparing for this event?

Well, I have been preparing for 14 weeks. I know that sounds crazy, but I started getting ready before the Holidays in hopes for an invite. Again, I am just thrilled to be invited to the show.

What are your personal goals for this show?

My personal Goals? Great question. I am very happy to be a part of the IFBB and doing as well as I have been. I usually expect nothing, this way I can be happy with what I achieve, whatever it may be. I would hope that I can do better than my first trip to the Arnold... I'll see ya on stage. Good luck to everyone in the show.

What can the fans expect from you at this show?

This is a hard question for me to answer, since I am my hardest critic. I have a brand new 45-second routine that is just packed with excitement. My two-minute routine is also just packed from start to finish - high-energy and tons of strength moves that just keep getting harder as the routine goes on. Oh yeah, I have a few flips in there too, just a few ;) It is so hard; sometimes I can't believe that I can fit all that in just two minutes! As for my swimsuit rounds, consistency has always been my middle name, so we will just have to wait and see.

Other than at fitness pre-judging and finals, where else can fans see/meet you during this event?

I am so proud to say that I have been signed by GNC! So come by the booth to see me and all of the GNC Pro Performance Athletes; they are all so amazing and I am so thrilled to be a part of the team!

Please post any additional comments here:

There is only one quote that keeps me motivated. My Husband/Trainer Rob once said to me, "Determination - without it, we would never improve!" Thinking of this every day helps me to be so determined with doing my best, and just keep improving.

Fitness Predictions

It's tough for anyone to predict the top finishers in any fitness event. These girls must have the perfect balance of physique and routine to place well. Here are the girls who, in my opinion, will be ones to watch in each respective round, in no particular order.

    Physique:

    • Adela Friedmansky
    • Jen Hendershott
    • Kelly Ryan
    • Kim Klein
    • Julie Palmer

    Routine:

    • Kelly Ryan
    • Jen Hendershott
    • Stacy Hylton
    • Debbie Czempinski
    • Carla Sanchez

As anyone who follows the sport of pro fitness knows, it takes more than being great at one round. You have to have a great balance of both to come out a champion. Here are my overall placing predictions for the Southwest.

Top Six Overall Predictions

  1. Adela Friedmansky - Consistency with bringing in a balanced physique of awesome symmetry and the perfect level of conditioning is Adela's strength. If her routines can continue improving, she should remain on top and take this title.

  2. Kelly Ryan - She works so hard to bring her physique to the judges' standards. Her routines will, without a doubt, leave your jaw on the floor, so if her physique comes up, I predict she will bump past Jen for 2nd place.

  3. Jen Hendershott - "Attitude" is this girl's middle name! Her routine creativity and skills will wow you, and her physique is ever-improving, making her a shoe-in for 3rd place.

  4. Kim Klein - Kim brings in a little more muscle, nicely shaped and balanced, and is very skilled in her routine moves as well. With a little more creativity and personality, she should claim 4th place.

  5. Stacy Hylton - Stacy suffered some setbacks in late 2004 during her Olympia prep, but I predict she will bounce back and come in to the Arnold better than ever - with excitingly new and different routines and a tighter physique than before - to secure the 5th place slot.

  6. Tracey Greenwood - Tracey's been working hard on the symmetry of her physique, and if she can improve upon this while cleaning up her strength-showcased routines, she should finish in 6th place.

Who Do You Think Will Win The Fitness International?

Adela Garcia-Friedmansky
Tracey Greenwood
Jen Hendershott
Stacy Hylton
Tanji Johnson
Kim Klein
Kirsten Nicewarner
Julie Palmer
Kelly Ryan
Carla Sanchez
