And it just gets weirder in Cardio World!
If you're new to fitness, you may not be 'down' with all the hip lingo or topics of bodily discussion. You might hear people argue about whether or not it's metabolically smart to do morning workouts on an empty stomach. You might think to yourself: what the heck are they talking about? Worry not! Cardio Girl has your back, Jack!
Conventional fitness wisdom dictates that working out as soon as you wake up and before you eat anything capitalizes on ketosis, or the body's attempt to burn fat for energy. Since your stomach hasn't taken in new food (that's called fasting, btw) for hours while you slept, 'breaking a sweat' before 'breaking the fast' forces your body to search for usable forms of energy (Fat!) to fuel the workout.
Unfortunately, unless you are getting ready for a bodybuilding contest and have eaten nothing but cold, dry, hard chicken breasts for weeks, fasted cardio might not be such a good idea. Because, according to your metabolism, your muscle looks just as tasty as a hunk of fat. Mmmm, muscle.
In this episode of Cardio World, I take a trip where no man has gone before: into Todd's stomach to talk to the Big Man himself: Meta-Bolism.
