[ FBBFan.com ] Hello Emily, Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to share a bit about yourself with FBBFan.com readers!

[ Emily Nicholson ] Hi there! Thank you for the opportunity to share a bit about myself!

[ FF ] Would you please tell us a little bit about yourself? How old are you? Where are you from? Current Residence? Relationship Status? Family Life?

[ EN ] I'm 35 years old. I live in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. I've been married for about 8 years now and we have one very cute Goldendoodle named Bushy.

[ FF ] What is your profession?

[ EN ] I worked as an attorney for several years in the areas of real estate and tax law. I really enjoyed my work, but it could be very stressful. My husband asked me if there was anything else I would like to do. I knew that fitness had always been a constant in my life and something I really enjoyed. After much consideration, I took the opportunity to get licensed in Personal Training and Sports Nutrition. Now I'm a personal trainer and I love it!

[ FF ] How did you get involved in the sport of women's bodybuilding and competing in figure?

[ EN ] I have always been interested in women's bodybuilding since I was a kid. I looked through the bodybuilding and fitness magazines. I admired the competitors' hard work and discipline and of course their bodies! I actually told people I was going to grow up to be a professional bodybuilder! I asked my parents for weight sets and equipment for birthdays and holidays!

When I got to high school, I found like-minded people who wanted to compete. I always helped them with their color, posing, and went to their shows, but I never got on-stage myself. Throughout college it was the same thing. People told me I should compete, but I never did.

Finally, after law school and my husband's question about anything else I might want to do, I had to enter a competition, at least once in my life! I was so happy that I finally had the time and opportunity to compete! I was really going to do it!

I met with a woman at my gym who had competed before in Fitness. She told me everything I would need to know to enter a Fitness competition. So, that's what I did! I trained, followed a diet, got a choreographed routine, and got on-stage for the first time! After the first one I was hooked and couldn't wait to do it again; so I entered a few more! Finally, I realized my strength was in Figure and began to compete solely in that.

[ FF ] What do you enjoy about being a figure competitor?

[ EN ] It's fun to be able to compete in a sport as an adult. We get to work out and then show off our results on-stage! I like having a goal in mind when I go to the gym.

I also love working out and eating clean. I love to see what I'm actually able to accomplish with my body and see how far I can push it. I like the sculpting and perfecting part. It's a constant process of improvement and self-discovery. And I like dressing up in the sparkly suits too!

[ FF ] How do your friends, family and the general public react to your physique?

[ EN ] My family and friends are very supportive of my physique regardless of whether I'm on season or off. It was actually surprising to see that what I was doing was having an effect on the people around me; my friends and family started working out and watching their diets too!

I notice when I'm close to my competition dates that the general public starts to make comments and they're always very positive and encouraging. Once I start getting random comments and fitness questions from strangers, I take it as objective feedback that I'm almost stage ready!

[ FF ] You won your IFBB Pro Card at the 2009 NPC USA, there were 48 competitors in your class alone! What did this victory mean to you?

[ EN ] As they called my name for first place, I was thinking, "Oh my gosh, this is really happening!" It was a dream come true, and I feel so fortunate and honored to have achieved this goal.

I couldn't think of a better way to earn my Pro Card. After years of competing, to have it happen like that, in the biggest class I had ever competed in, and in Las Vegas, was icing on the cake. I had my family and best friend there too to celebrate with me after the show.

[ FF ] What does being an "IFBB Pro Figure Competitor" mean to you?

[ EN ] Being an IFBB Pro Figure Competitor is such an honor because it puts you in the same category as all the great competitors who came before. I'm so excited to compete with and walk across the same stage with the same women that I've looked up to and admired for years. I feel like I've accomplished that childhood dream of being a "professional bodybuilder".

[ FF ] Would you please share your competition history with us?

[ FF ] We understand you have a busy 2010 competition schedule planned. Can you tell us about your schedule and when we will be seeing you on-stage this year?

[ EN ] I plan to compete in 6 shows this year, starting in August and ending in November. As an amateur I competed from May-Sept, so it will be the same number of months, with just a couple more shows.

    • August 6-7 - Jacksonville Pro Figure Classic, Jacksonville, Florida
    • August 13-14 - Europa Supershow, Dallas, Texas
    • October 23 - Houston Pro, Houston, Texas
    • October 30 - Border States Pro Figure, San Diego, California
    • November 13 - Kentucky Pro, Louisville, Kentucky
    • November 20 - Ft Lauderdale Pro, Ft Lauderdale, Florida

[ FF ] You had initially told us you planned to kick-off your 2010 competition season at the Hartford Europa Battle of Champions, but decided to skip that show and focus on the 2010 Jacksonville Pro, was your physique not responding to your diet and training at the pace you would like? How has this extra time helped you prepare?

[ EN ] Originally, I did have my eye on the Hartford Europa Battle of Champions, but decided to wait and do back to back shows in Jacksonville and Dallas instead. I was concerned about drying out too many weeks in a row and ending up flat by the time I got to Dallas.

The extra time has allowed me to continue to make the small changes you always wish you had more time to make!

[ FF ] What is your current height, weight during off-season and contest?

[ EN ] I'm 5'3 ½" and off-season I weigh around 120lbs. I like to be around 108lbs when I step on stage; occasionally I'm a few lbs lighter or heavier depending on my training and goals at the time.

[ FF ] What do you consider your best feature?

[ EN ] My best feature for competing is my waist. After training and dieting for months, it can get pretty small which makes everything else look better!

In general, though, I would say my smile is my best feature and I like to laugh a lot.

[ FF ] Would you please tell us a little about your workout schedule? Contest and during the Off-Season? Does it vary much?

[ EN ] I train with weights 5 days a week, working on a different body part every day, whether I'm on-season or off. My cardio is the part of my workout that changes when I want to get into contest shape. Off-season I'll do cardio 3 times a week for about a half hour. When I want to prepare for a contest I do cardio 6 days a week, twice a day for about 45 min each session.

[ FF ] Do you have a favorite exercise?

[ EN ] I love the bench press and always have. It doesn't seem to hurt or burn in the same way that other exercises do and it's exciting to go heavy!

[ FF ] Are you preparing any differently for the 2010 Jacksonville Pro as opposed to previous competitions you've entered?

[ EN ] Every year's strategy is different, so you just hope you get it right! I'm really happy with the look I'll be bringing to the stage this year. I've continued to shape and sculpt my upper and lower body, build more muscle, keep my waist small, and attempt to find that perfect balance of leanness!

[ FF ] Do you have a coach or anyone who is helping you prepare for the 2010 Jacksonville Pro and your other planned shows?

[ EN ] I started training with coach, Mike Davies, four years ago. I really like the programs and diets he puts together. They are able to transform the body; it's incredible.

[ FF ] Mike Davies is considered one of the best figure coaches in the sport today. Since you began working with him, what do you feel sets him apart from the rest and has helped you and many of the other girls he works with succeed on so many levels in this sport?

[ EN ] Mike Davies is so knowledgeable when it comes to training the body, nutrition, and the desired look of the sport. His expertise sets him apart. So, it's easy to put your trust in him and not second guess or listen to anyone else's advice. That trust helps the competitor focus and keeps them on the winning track.

Also, on a personal note, he really believed in me and encouraged me in a way that kept me motivated year after year. I feel so lucky to have had that support.

[ FF ] Competing in 6 shows this year is a lot! How are you planning to prepare for this? Both mentally and physically? How do you plan to maintain your physique so it is ready to step on-stage week after week?

[ EN ] Physically, I know that I need to just follow the program I get from Mike Davies. However, mentally I've had to gear up for this season and that started with taking a nice long break from the structure of competition training. Now, I'm ready and excited to enter another season and my first full season as a Pro. That will definitely be a thought that will keep me motivated when training gets tough.

You really have to want to compete and it does become a test of endurance; you have to remind yourself why you wanted to do it in the first place and why you still love it.

[ FF ] What is a day-in-the-life of Emily Nicholson like?

[ EN ] First, I wake up and take out my dog. Then I start making my food for the day and pack it up in little baggies and place it all in my cooler. Next, I head to the gym and do my first weight training and cardio session of the day. Then I come home and eat my next meal.

In the afternoon, I train clients at the Riverwest Fitness Studio in Chicago. I especially enjoy when I get to train someone for their first competition! I eat a couple meals in between training clients and then head home to do another cardio session. Then I relax, play with the dog, read, do a little food prep, and go to bed.

On the weekends I like to get together with friends and family and just hang out.

[ FF ] What are your hobbies and interests outside of the bodybuilding world?

[ EN ] When I'm training, I don't have a lot of hobbies and interests outside of bodybuilding. However, in the off-season I make time for traveling, eating out, and just experiencing life.

[ FF ] What's currently on your iPod?

[ EN ] I listen to all kinds of music, but right now some of my favorites include songs from Drake, Black Eyed Peas, Ludacris, Jay-Z, Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Kanye West.

[ FF ] What are your "Top 5" favorite movies? Favorite actor and/or actress?

[ EN ] One of my favorite movies from my childhood was "Conan the Barbarian". I totally became a huge Arnold fan after that! He's still my all-time favorite actor.

I love comedies though, and some of my favorites are: The Hangover, Swingers, Wedding Crashers, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

[ FF ] Who are your role models? And/or who do you look up to in your life?

[ EN ] There are many people in my life that I look up to. However, my mother is at the top of the list. She raised 3 kids, worked in the corporate world, then started her own business, and finally ran for public office. I admire her ambition and determination!

[ FF ] What advice do you have for women who would like to get involved in the sport of bodybuilding?

[ EN ] When I first considered entering a show I thought, "I'm not ready yet...I'm still not ready yet" and I missed many chances in my life to compete.

I encourage anyone who has the desire to compete to try it at least once! Just find someone who has competed before and ask them questions about it! Enter a local show and see if you like it. Don't wait!

[ FF ] Who are your favorite bodybuilding athletes?

[ EN ] Arnold Schwarzenegger and Cory Everson are my favorite bodybuilders and my first inspirations into the sport. Since then there have been so many amazing athletes that inspire and motivate me; too many to name.
