It's March 28, 2009 in Vancouver, Washington at Skyview High School. It's a rainy 9:00 a.m. morning and all of the competitors are safe inside from the dreaded zebra skin they'd acquire in our typical northwest liquid sunshine.
I was surprised to see that even at prejudging for this local show the auditorium was almost packed! There was quite a big turnout for the bikini division, new to the NPC as of this year. There were 13 competitors in 4 height classes. Nobody really knew what to expect from these girls except for a sexy walk and great bods.
The awards for bikini were given out during prejudging. The overall for bikini was given to the sassy Chelsie Beanblossom whose matching red suit and nails helped complete the whole bikini package.
The night show was packed! The exhibitor hall was buzzing with people. Guest posers who came to the event were: Flex Lewis, courtesy of Flex Magazine, and 2 IFBB fitness pro's Safiya Johnson and Rose Hendricks who signed autographs and smiled for the camera with some of their northwestern fans.
The show was put on by Bohm Productions out of Vancouver Washington. From the looks of things it ran smoothly. Here's a quick rundown of the show and winners.
Jr. Fitness:
First up were the junior fitness competitors. I don't think I've ever witnessed more spunk, coordination, and just plain attitude in three girls! Third place was given to Morgan Clendenen, a 9-year old with a boombox and some pretty sweet dance moves.
Second was given to 10-year old Savannah Clendenen (I'm sensing a trend here) who did a routine to some pop hits. First was rightfully given to Samantha Grubbs whose incredible coordination and head-stand that was reminiscent of Kai Greene's recent Arnold move had the crowd cheering!
Guests Safiya Johnson And Rose Hendricks:
These two ladies showed us how it's really done in the fitness world. Defying gravity and most normal people's energy reserves for a week in only a couple minutes on stage. I felt like I was watching a ping-pong game, they were moving around so fast. Those are some tough cookies.
Figure:
The figure competitors were a large group! The 5'7" and under height class had 16 women in it! I had an extremely hard time picking favorites on this one. In the end the overall went to Ryan Everson from the 5'7" and under class. She had a beautifully proportioned figure and some shoulders to die for!
Here's a quick rundown of who took first and second for the height classes: 5'3" and under, first place Jennifer Meeker, who reminded me of a 1950's pinup model with her perfectly done hair and red lips.
In the 5'5" and under class Victoria Stroup won with her well muscled body and tiny waist. Again, the 5'7" and under class was taken by overall winner Ryan Everson. And the amazons over 5'7" was taken by beautiful brunette Anastasiya Chumova.
Fitness:
Women's fitness only had two competitors - Laurie Joslin and Andriana Medena. Both of the routines were incredibly entertaining. I had no idea anyone could do a backflip wearing a giant afro wig but Andriana Medena pulled it off, in legwarmers. Laurie took first place.
Teen Men Bodybuilding:
First place went to David McDonald whose routine got some loud cheers from the audience with his smooth robotic moves and great stage presence. Second went to Alaskan Mat Wonchala. Third went to Kendrick Burton.
Novice Men:
In the lightweight division Bobby McDonough took his class. His striated glutes were impressive to see on a novice bodybuilder. In the middleweight class David Johnston took first. He looked fantastic; great symmetry and a handsome smile that had my friend and I scribbling all kinds of notes to each other.
In the heavyweight class Toa Save won. He had an impressive upper half but in the end the well proportioned and devilishly handsome David Johnston took the overall.
Novice Women's Bodybuilding:
In the lightweight class Lisa Harper won her class and the overall with the extra size she had over the other competitors.
Open Women's Bodybuilding:
Cindy Goodrich took first in the women's lightweight. She came in nice and lean with a well proportioned physique. As for the middleweights... Jennifer Erickson won her class and the overall for women's bodybuilding. Chris Clark took first in the heavyweight class with her impressive legs and balanced physique.
Master Men Over 50:
A special tribute was given to Dan Marsh who died before this competition. He would have competed alongside Felton Campbell who deceived us all with the body of a 30-something in the 50-and-up class.
Charlie Brown, whose sword fighting skills came in handy, thrust his way to second place, and Joe Peterson whose routine was nicely done to God Bless America. Felton came in first in this class.
Master Men Over 40:
Andrew Saguid took first place in this class as well as the masters men overall. My first thought when I saw this guy was, "This guy looks freaking awesome for being over 40!". Symmetry, size, a great smile, he had the whole package.
One of the more memorable routines was done by fifth place winner Kevin James who posed to "I Like 'Em Big And Chunky". His routine had the audience all riled up!
Guest Flex Lewis:
Midway through the show special guest IFBB Pro Flex Lewis owned the stage with his absolutely massive (for 5'7") body and impressed the audience even more with a frog leap off the stage to pose in the crowd.
Men's Bodybuilding:
In the bantamweight class Eric Sailer got first with his leanness and symmetry. First place in the lightweight group was awarded to an entertaining poser Mark Sindayen. In the middleweights Corey Hancock won this class.
Light-heavyweight was taken by A.J. Moore whose big legs neatly nabbed him this spot. For the big dudes, the heavyweights, it was a tough call between Zack Shakir and Twayne Rawls. In the end Twayne won with size while Zack's super lean self was placed in second.
 Conclusion
Well, there you go. That's the scoop on what happened at the 2009 NPC Vancouver USA Natural Bodybuilding Championships & Tanji Johnson, Fitness, Figure & Bikini Classic. After the show guests got a last few snapshots with the guest posers and took as many free goodies as they could from the sponsor booths. It continued to rain all night and I'm sure there are many reddish brown sheets at the Shilo Inn from these athletes.
