Review by James Purtell
Layton, Utah - The NGA Utah Bodybuilding and Figure Championship showcased some of the best natural athletes in the northern mountain states region. It was held at Northridge High School in Layton, Utah on 12 April 2008.
The 1st through 3rd place Novice winners, Open Women's winners and Figure winners received beautiful trophies from Neils Andersen Trophies. All the top three Men's Open winners received swords for their hard earned victories.
Teen Bodybuilding Division:
The only teen to enter, Chris Martinez, opened up the show with very nicely built muscular physique for his young age. He would later battle in the Novice category and more than hold his own against older competitors.
Men's Masters Division:
The Men's Masters were very competitive. 50 year old Ted Rich (Owner of Gym Hard Wear), in his first show ever, cleaned up the competition with a thick and powerfully ripped and vascular physique! Ted seemed at ease on the posing stage and displayed excellent stage presentation and an outstanding posing routine. Ted held off strong competition from 2nd Place Robert Wilcock and 3rd Place Kelly Moore.
Men's Novice Division:
The Men's Novice Lightweight class displayed 11 polished physiques. This outstanding class was led by Jeremy Yearsley, who had tremendous muscle density and cuts. He was followed by Eric Litster, who came dialed in with his best physique to date! 3rd Place was captured by Chris Averett.
The Novice Middleweight Class displayed lots of muscle and striated cuts on incredible physiques that confirmed that some of the best muscle at the competition lied in the middleweight division! Clint Pixton took the first place trophy home followed closely by Brian Charles and Thomas Valberg respectively.
The Novice Heavyweight Class was owned by non-other than the Masters winner, Ted Rich followed by 2nd Place Jeff Schuman and 3rd Place Kelly Moore.
Women's Bodybuilding Division:
Women's Open Bodybuilding Class featured 5 very well built and beautiful ladies who flexed their muscle for the packed crowd who came to see good quality female muscle, and that is just what they got! Taking first place was Jessica Curry who came dialed in and looking striated and unbeatable this night.
In 2nd Place was Ali C. Pepper of Montana who had dropped an incredible 60+ pounds for the show. Her night routine featured a beach scene to David Lee Roth's "California Girls." 3rd Place went to DeAnna Kinsey.
Ms. Figure Contest:
After intermission, was the Ms Figure, which featured 11 of the most beautiful ladies in the mountain states region! The ladies displayed excellent poise and stage presence. In the Short Class, Quincey Whimpey took 1st Place. Her beauty and fine symmetry combined to make her unbeatable this night. She will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in 2009!
Alesha Kozlowski displayed elegance, beauty and outstanding stage presence and took 2nd Place. Jennifer Salazar at only 5'1" showed good things come in small packages as she looked flawless and will be a huge force to reckon with in the Figure arena for years to come!
If the Short Class did not get the fans in a frenzy, the Tall Class sure did! All these ladies did their homework and made it tough on the judges to pick a winner. Traci Millward came out on top when all the dust settled. She would eventually also take the Overall Figure Championship from Short Class winner Quincey Whimpey.
2nd Place went to Joanna Wyatt and 3rd Place to Tonna Johnson. All the ladies presented a tight physique, awesome lines and femininity that are the standard for all Figure women to try and achieve.
Men's Open Divisions:
Last event of the night featured the Men's Open Class. 150 + pound Brandon Burrows brought a well conditioned and full muscle bellied physique to the stage, edging 2007 Northern States Champion A. Frederick Sage Agborkhese and 207 pound Lance King, who looked massive and hungry to win. This would be the Light Weight's night with Brandon Burrows taking first with a unanimous decision by the judges.
