IFBB Iron Man Pro 2008 Preview!

What's this year's Iron Man going to look like; will Toney Freeman take 1st place for a second consecutive year? Or will Phil Heath beat everyone? Get my top 5 right here and why I think it will go down that way!

The first big competition after the 2007 Mr. Olympia, and the first of the year, the 19th annual Iron Man Pro is coming up soon again! It is held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on February the 16th. The winner will get the prize of $15,000, and the top 5 competitors will be qualified for the 2008 Mr. Olympia.

What's this year's Iron Man going to look like; will Toney Freeman take 1st place for a second consecutive year? Or will Phil Heath beat everyone? Seeing his recent pictures, he really has a good chance. Out of all the competitions he has been in on all levels, only once he didn't place first; will he continue this?

What about Silvio Samuel, who took the overall title and won in the 210 and under weight class in last year's IFBB Europa Pro Show, and placed 7th in his first Mr. Olympia contest last year?

Since it's hard to make any solid predictions, because a lot of the conditioning comes down to the last few days before the contest, we have seen recent pictures of the athletes which we can use as well as their previous results, and against who they competed.

Here are the five pro's that will be qualified for this year's Mr. Olympia during the Iron Man Pro.

1st Place - Silvio Samuel:

Silvio placed 4th in last year's Iron Man Pro. Based on just that fact I wouldn't predict his first place in this year's Iron Man Pro. It's more so the fact that he grew a lot after that placing; he took 2nd place in the 2007 IFBB Sacramento, 3rd in the 2007 IFBB Colorado Pro, he was the overall winner of last year's IFBB Europa Pro and competed for the first time in the Mr. Olympia, and already placed in the top 10!

He beat guys like Hidetada Yamagishi, Toney Freeman and Darrem Charles. He looked great the last time we saw him on stage in the 2007 Mr. Olympia; thick muscle-bellies, great condition and symmetry.

He's been training with trainer of the pros, Charles Glass, so that's another reason he might come in even better shape. I think he has potential to win this year's Iron Man Pro and get qualified again for this year's Mr. Olympia, where he will place at least in the top 10 again.

2nd Place - Toney Freeman:

The "X-man" placed 14th in last year's Mr. Olympia, where everybody expected him to place higher; at least in the top 10. We heard that this was due to different things (illness right before the contest, etc.).

Considering his first placings in the 2006 IFBB Europa Super Show and last year's IFBB Iron Man Pro, 2007 IFBB Sacramento Pro, and third place in last year's Arnold Classic, I see no reason that - if everything works out for him this year, and he doesn't get sick a few days before the contest, or other external factors that he doesn't have control over occur to him - he couldn't make the top 3 in this year's Iron Man Pro. That is if he comes in the best shape he can, like in the contests he did before last year's Mr. Olympia, and still has the X-frame with the great symmetry going on.

Although his age (he's 41 now) might slow him down, I think Toney will still place higher than Phil, but will not be able to be compared with Silvio's condition.

3rd Place - Phil Heath:

Some of you might have seen the pictures of Phil "The gift" Heath that were recently released. Many of us were shocked to see him in that great of shape already. He took first place in both the 2006 Colorado Pro Championships as well as in the 2006 New York Pro Championship, and made the top 5 in last year's Arnold Classic, competing against guys like Victor Martinez, Toney Freeman and Dexter Jackson.

This is his first Iron Man Pro, and, even though being new to the game, I predict, mostly based on the pictures of him that were recently released and his placing in last year's Arnold Classic, that he will make the top 5 by placing 3rd.

4th Place - Eddie Abbew:

Eddie "The Savage" Abbew placed 3rd at last year's Iron Man Pro, beating Silvio Samuel. Later that year, at last year's Mr. Olympia, he didn't place, due to pre-contest mistakes he had made like getting the wrong tan (looking too dark), carbing up too much and being too overwhelmed by the whole "razzmatazz" of the competition.

His weaknesses were too obvious too; especially his legs were lacking size. He has learned a lot from last year's Mr. Olympia (he said himself) and being very motivated and driven, I think he will be able to place top 5 again this year in a competition that's of lower caliber.

5th Place - Gustavo Badell:

Gustavo took 8th place in last year's Mr. Olympia, beating Johnnie Jackson and upcoming successes like David Henry and Ronnie Rockel. He's been in the game for a while now, and has got his name out there.

I think he'll make the top 5, considering the other competitors he's competing against, and will be qualified for the Mr. Olympia. Depending on how he comes in, his weaknesses, like his big waist, will keep him from making the top 10 this year (in the Mr. Olympia) I think.
