Contest Review & Results
The 18th annual edition of the Mid-Illinois Bodybuilding and Figure Championships was another huge success with well over 100 competitors from eight different states throughout the Midwest descending upon Ottawa, Illinois in front of a standing room only sellout crowd of over 1000 spectators.
Special Guest Poser:
Mr. Olympia finalist Gustavo Badell, was the featured guest poser and began his posing routine with a tribute to the first ten Mr. Olympias then paid tribute to his Latin roots with a little salsa dancing in his routine .He then went to the microphone to thank the audience for their support of bodybuilding and its' athletes.
Promoters, Jeff & Ann Johnson, owners of FLEX GYM & FITNESS CENTER in Ottawa, and former national mixed pairs champions, have designated this show as a novice competition, meaning that it is open to all competitors that have not won an overall NPC title, making it the largest contest of its' type in the country.
The show began with the mixed pairs division, won by the team of Maleah Bataoel and Mandus Buckle of Chicago.
Teenage Men's Division:
Next up was the teenage men's division won by Kevin Clark from Ottawa,Il who over a year and a half ago was in a serious accident that severed his right foot. After several surgeries.he was back in the gym training hard with a permanent boot for his foot, even though his right leg was smaller than his left one his overall muscle mass and conditioning gave him the win.
Masters Women Over 35:
In the masters women's over 35 division, LoriKay Paden of St, Joseph,IL took home the first place trophy with her ripped physique.
Men's Masters Division:
The mens masters 35-39 class followed with a win by Eric Maney of Springfield,IL In the 40-49 David Combs of Dearborn,MI bested a field of 10 competitors to win this class for the second year in a row.
In the final masters men class of 50 and over, Mike Scarpino of Chicago won over 7 fellow competitors. The overall masters title then went to the 40-49 champ, Dave Combs.
Novice Women's Divisions:
In the novice womens divisions. Lorikay Paden won the lightweights for her second title of the night follwed by Karen Hansen of Schaumburg, IL claiming the heavyweight title. Karen then went on to claim the overall novice womens championships.
In the figure division, Jill Egizio of Plainfield, IL won the short class over a field of 8 competitors while Jennifer Scarpetta of Chicago won the tall class of 11 contestants. Jennifer went on to win the overall figure championships.
Men's Novice Division:
The final division of the night was the mens novice class with Oscar Quijada of Highland Park,IL taking 1st in a field of 12 lightweights. Jon Burnell of Batavia ,IL followed with a 1st place in the largest class of the show with a field of 18 middleweights.
Mandus Buckle ,who earlier won the mixed pairs division claimed the lightheavyweight class with a win over 14 fellow competitors. Josh Waytenick of Ottawa,IL walked away with the heavyweight title for the second year in a row over 8 other heavies.
The Battle For Overall:
For the first time in the shows history the overall mens novice title was won by the lightweight class winner. Oscar Quijada's overall balance of shape, symmetry and superb conditioning enabled him to capture the overall mens title to top off another successful Mid-Illinois Championships.
