2008 NGA Carolina Night Of Champions Review!

The NGA Carolina Night of Champions Men's and Women's Amateur Bodybuilding & Figure Pro-Qualifier was held at the historic Carolina Theater in downtown Greensboro, NC on Saturday, June 7th.

Drug-free bodybuilding arrived in a big way in the state of North Carolina with the first-ever NGA Carolina Night of Champions Men's and Women's Amateur Bodybuilding & Figure Pro-Qualifier held at the historic Carolina Theater in downtown Greensboro, NC on Saturday, June 7th.

An enthusiastic crowd greeted the athletes who had traveled from as far away as Florida and Tennessee to compete in Dr. John Dabbs and Marty Lotito's NGA show. Marty is the NGA Chairman for North and South Carolina and Tennessee and has a reputation of running athlete-friendly shows. "It's all about the competitors," Lotito said.

At check in on Friday, each athlete was presented with a 'goodie bag' stuffed with a competitor's tee shirt, ball cap, protein bars, protein powder, fitness magazines and a shaker bottle. Many of the products were provided by the show's sponsors including GNC, Family Fitness, Vitamin Shoppe, Body Fit and Scivation.

Every athlete took a polygraph test administered by officers from the Rowan County Sheriffs Department to attest to being seven-years drug free, an NGA requirement. After the competition, the winners were given a urinalysis test to further determine their drug-free status.

Veteran expediter, Pat Valentino from North Carolina and head judge, Paul Hendricks from New Jersey insured the show started on time and moved sharply from class to class. The other judges included NGA Pros Deon Benjamin from Texas, Scott "Old Navy" Hults from Alabama, Eric Broser and Nicole Weeks from Florida.

The three NGA Pros also entertained the audience during intermission with their Guest Poser routines. Dabbs two young sons, Will and Tyler, rounded out the entertainment with a round of bodybuilding poses which had the audience cheering. Earlier that day, the boys won their Blue Belts in Karate.

The after party, hosted by the promoters was held at Natty Greens, a famous watering hole in Greensboro. Most of the competitors and their friends and families showed up for the party. Marty and John provided lots of post-contest food. Not much was left after the competitors bellied up to the food bar.

Marty Lotito and John Dabbs are committed to growing the NGA in North and South Carolina and Tennessee. Their next show is the second annual NGA Music City Bodybuilding and Figure Pro Am in Nashville, Tennessee on June 28th.

Several competitors from this show said they would travel to Tennessee for the NGA Music City. Needless to say, Marty and John's reputation as excellent show promoters make it an easy decision for athletes to enter their events.

The Carolina Night of Champions produced two NGA Pro Card winners.

The first card went to 50 year-old veteran preacher, Rev. Wendell Sparrow, who wowed the crowd with his conditioning and won the Masters, Grand Masters and Open Lightweight classes in only his fourth show. Sparrow placed Second in the Open Overall and walked away with a NGA Masters Pro Card.

The Open Champion and new NGA Pro is Emmanuel Jackson, from Tennessee. Jackson competed in the 2008 NGA Magic City Bodybuilding and Figure Championships in Birmingham a few short weeks ago. After placing Second in that show Emmanuel brought an improved package to the stage in Greensboro and won the Championship and his NGA Pro Card.
