There was not a cloud in the sky for the opening of the annual Mr. & Ms. Muscle Beach competition at world famous Venice, California. A picture perfect day greeted competitors, fans and tourists for what the world thinks of when they imagine the home of bodybuilding. Media coverage was not limited to the usual muscle magazines but was on the top of the list for both local and national television. Even all news radio station KNX 1070 did an all day live broadcast from beside the Muscle Beach "Pit". And of course Bodybuilding.com was there to bring you more photos and coverage of the scene than any other source. There is no place in the world that strikes the imagination of bodybuilders and fans like "Muscle Beach".
Hall of Fame Awards were handed out by the Iron Man Magazine publisher himself, John Balik. Many people don't know that John was a well respected bodybuilder and also an alumnus of Muscle Beach. On hand for their induction were bodybuilding legends Bill Pearl, Charlie Fautz and Bill Grant.
Each one of them still greatly involved in the sport since being a part of the golden age of bodybuilding. And the amazing Bill Grant at 60 years old remains a true testament about what a healthy lifestyle and bodybuilding can do. Sporting arms that make many of the current pros envious, Bill also has a waist size that can probably be put in smaller jeans than any of us.
In the pit, tanning up and pumping up, were 55 men and women competitors who would spend the day flexing and posing for the record breaking crowds on the stage at the beach. Although many familiar faces were in the contest, there were a great many new people trying their best for this July 4th. And a daunting task it is because there can be crowds of over 100,000 people on the boardwalk at Venice.
At the end of the day, walking away as winners were LeShawn Gonzales as the overall men's winner, Magdalena Avandano as the women's bodybuilding winner and Lana Titus as the winner of the figure competition. And then wowing the cheering crowd to a Popeye routine and winning the best posing award from Tuff Stuff Gym Equipment Company was master's competitor and veteran Stevie Rivera. And a number of the guys are on their way to Las Vegas for the USA joining Muscle Beach head judge Jerome "Hollywood" Ferguson.
So it was a great day at Muscle Beach Venice; but wait until the Labor Day show! Special goings on for that competition that you will not want to miss. So if you can make it to the beach in September, be there. And if you can't, catch it on Bodybuilding.com.
